Marilyn and Russ, From what I have dug up in my family, the child took the father name. But in this case the child was born 3 months before her parents marriage,( their marriage was only about 2 4 months) but she was not listed as a family member. She had a brother and 3 more step sibling, cousins, etc. but she was never mention. She run off at the age of 16 and married. My mother told me it was common by then that is a child was born out of wed-lock, that the family usually pay No attention to it and they try to get the child married off and move away as fast as they could. In this case it was true. The only way I found my Great-grandmother was thur her marriage license, where she run off to North Carolina and use her nickname on the license, It took me 18 months.
