The reason I asked the question, is that I have an ancestor that no one can find a maiden name or the first name of her husband. A wealthy man left land, that she was living on with her children, to her children in his will, but made no mention of her relationship to him. She was not his granddaughter, she was born before the birth of his first child, and not his daughter or daughter-in-law. Sometimes if you've looked very hard for something and can't find it, like the name of this lady's husband, you have to look at it from a different angle. In this case, maybe there never was a husband. The children all had her last name. One account shows that the name of one of the children was a name that could have been a nickname for the wealthy man, but used the child's last name for the father. Sigh. We may never know though..
