This is a plea for help and accuracy. There are many folks who believe their family dates back to a John HAYNES, born in 1670 in Bedford County, VA. I see this in LDS files, WFT files, family trees, and web sites. I would love to believe this, since I descend from William HAYNES 1710-1780, who died in Bedford County. William is often cited as the son of this John HAYNES, along with Henry HAYNES, b. 1701, and Jasper HAYNES b.1715. Here's the problem: In 1670, most Virginians lived within 25 miles of the coast. Bedford County wasn't formed until 1754, 84 years after 1670. It is 150+ miles from the coast. What became Bedford County was probably Indian territory until at least 1730 or so. [I must confess that I owe a debt of gratitude to Earl "Ozzie" Osborne, who gently pointed this out to me some years ago. Thanks Ozzie!] If anyone out there has any direct evidence of this John HAYNES, I'd love to hear it. A will, land transaction, deed, bond, tithe list, whatever. If not, let's act to question this before it is repeated so often that it becomes engrained.
