    1. [VABEDFOR] The Irvines
    2. Edwin "Tex" Irvin
    3. To Lanna: There was a large family of pioneer Irvines in Halifax county who bought lands from William Byrd II's widow, very early-1745-46. They lived mostly on the south side of the Dan River. They operated the Irvine Ferry there, west of the Boyd ferry. This ferry was used to help transport General Greene's troops across in the famous "race to the Dan" in the Rev. War. Greene ordered the ferry burned to keep Cornwallis from using it. The elder Irvines were James and Alexander and they had many sons and daughters. They intermarried with the Lawsons and Brandons. Many of their heirs still live in the area. Some of these Irvines did indeed move to NC. A younger James Irvine was involved in supplying the Patriot troops with provisions. I have long believed these Irvines were kin in some way to my Bedford/Campbell Irvines, but I can't prove that yet. There was another, more famous Alexander Irvine who helped survey the dividing line between NC and Virginia in 1729, with William Byrd and William Mayo. Alexander was a professor at William and Mary. I can't tie him to my Irvines either. He was educated in Scotland and died in 1732. And then, to complicate it even more, there was a whole passel of Irvins just across the Blue Ridge. They married into the Logans and Doaks. I think most of them went to Kentucky or Indiana. And you know the Scotsh-Irish. They were all named Alexander or Christopher or David or William or James, and they all named their many sons the same. It is very easy to confuse the generations, fathers and sons and cousins. Good luck on your search. Edwin Dean Irvin

    2. are any of the Irvine's you've traced linked to NC. I have a James Irvine in my line In a message dated 1/15/2008 6:01:37 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, edwirvin@yahoo.com writes: Thanks, Karen, and the others for responding. I want to try another angle to finding the deceased Christopher, father of orphan Christopher Irvine, of 1775. Is there possibly a list extant of those killed in the French & Indian War who may have lived in Bedford or one of the adjoining counties like Amherst or Albemarle or Halifax? Perhaps a list containing a Christopher Irvine who was born around 1725? and died around 1760? give or take. I know I am reaching here, but it is worth a shot. I have read that 300 people were killed over the years by Indians in the area, mostly in the western part of Bedford and Halifax, near modern Roanoke city. I also know there were three forts maintained on the Staunton/Roanoke river to defend against the Indian raids. One of the Calloways commanded one of these forts. The Calloways were friends and neighbors to the Irvines, even inter-marrying. I have also read that parts of Bedford became almost deserted by the hysteria caused by the murders of settlers. Are there any military experts out there? Sadly, this War has been neglected and is poorly documented. William Byrd's Militia Rangers chased and killed Indians far and wide. The French involvement in the War was practically over with the fall of Quebec, but the Cherokee wars continued until 1763? probably even later. I know there are some military buffs out there who know much more than I. Any casualty lists? Of militia or civilians? 1. Re: [VABEDFOR] Christopher Irvine orphan
    2. Edwin: You ask some very provocative questions! Too bad there aren't more loose papers pertaining to orphans. I have very few orphans bonds here or indentures of young children. I know there were a lot per the court order books but the actual papers are slim. Karen Bedford Circuit Court -----Original Message----- From: Edwin "Tex" Irvin <edwirvin@yahoo.com> To: vabedfor@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 14 Jan 2008 5:55 am Subject: [VABEDFOR] Christopher Irvine orphan Thanks for the responses. I have seen most of this already. There were several Christophers in Bedford around this time, making it all a crapshoot as to which is which. If the two orphan references in 1769 and 1775 are the same Christopher, then I have an unknown elder Christopher named as father of the 1775 orphan. The "other" elder Christopher I know about. He died in 1768-69 and I have seen his will. He makes no mention of this minor son. I have long thought this elder Christopher to be the father of Kentucky David and William Irvine of the "Otter" estate.. He mentions them as his executors. William died in 1767, before old Christopher. William left his widow, Elizabeth Anthony Irvine, who later married an unrepentant tory named Robert Cowan. Cowan raised William's daughters. Anyway it is a long and winding road. The David named in old Christopher's will, (I have believed) is the Kentucky David who married Jane Kyle. I could be wrong here. David had two sons, Christopher, killed by Indians in 1786, and William who became a prominent pioneer of Kentucky. My Christopher (the commissioner of provisions) moved to Georgia around 1793. I have long believed we might be missing an older Christopher, but who he could be, I have no clue. Some of my little network have been searching for 20 years and it is all still a confusing mystery. Maybe the two orphans named are the same Christopher, son of Christopher. But the 1769 Christopher does not quite fit. Just prior to the old Christopher's death, he deeded much of his land to a Christopher Irvine Clendenning for a pittance. We believe he may be a grandson or nephew. Nobody knows where he fits in. And why would old Christopher not make provision for the minor Christopher in his will? Who knows. But the dilemma remains. Who is the Christopher named as father of the 1775 orphan? And if the 1769 orphan bound to John Irvin is the same as the 1775 orphan who chose Harry Terril as his guardian, why did he switch guardians? 3. Hi all, If there are any male descendants of Rev William Johnson, I'd like to encourage DNA testing. The Rev moved to Blount TN @ 1797, and it seems most sons went too. The only son who remained in Bedford area was Thomas who married Sally Dickerson. I descend from Francis, son of Thomas, and our line is almost extinct for testing. 3. Thought to add that a bit more on the name of "CHRISTOPHER IRVINE" in Bedford County. The first item below for July of 1754 was only about 3 months after the County of Bedford was formed from Lunenburg (with a piece of Albemarle added). [Bedford Court Order book 1-A, July Court, 1754] CHRISTOPHER IRVINE is listed as a resident land owner in a Road Work Order to clear a road, etc."beginning at and including IRVINE'S." The name of Christopher Irvine Jr. in 1759 (below) indicates another adult man named Christopher Irvine was living in Bedford, but it doesn't prove he was a son of the Christopher Irvine mentioned in 1754. "Junior" was used in the recorded documents to indicate two men of the same name were known to be living at the same time, with no intention of stating a relationship.. [Bedford Order Book 1-B, October Court 1759] "CHRISTOPHER IRVINE JR." was one of four men from Bedford who put up 50 pounds Bond to appear in Williamsburgh on second Tuesday in Sept. to give evidence against William Henson. 3. Perhaps you're aware there was also a Christopher Irvine living in Bedford who was Commissary under the provision law. Order book 6 in Bedford @ 1782 has many pages listing people who furnished supplies Rev War. (I've transcribed what I have on hand and have about half typed) He is sited frequently. 3. Edwin, I'm fairly positive the two separate mentions of Christopher Irvin(e) on different dates refer to the same orphan recorded twice. The first mention of 1769 indicates Christopher is an orphan and bound to John Irvin. This action comes from the Vestrymen of Russell Parish who were empowered to do such things. The second mention in 1775 makes me think the same orphan has aged by 6 years, and although still a minor under 21, he was old enough to choose his legal guardian. Court Order books usually have more "words" than those given in an Index, so you might try the Bedford Circuit Court and request a search or two and request copies. Christopher Irvine made his Bedford Will naming wife Mary, sons David and William as Execs., probated July 1769. If you get copy of the recorded will it might have some verbiage suggesting there were also minor children. The name of Christopher Irvine Jr. turns up here and there in the older Bedford records. I think a William Irvine was the earliest of the name in the vicinity and he had lived in Brunswick Co. > Lunenburg Co. > Bedford County. Bedford Will Book 1 contains a will also probated Feb.1769 for William. An estate Inventory was recorded in March of 1767. An allotment of Dower was recorded of Elizabeth Irvine in Nov. 29,1769. But other than the fact his wife was Elizabeth I know nothing of his family relationships. A few years ago in trying to find anything about early Russell Parish records, I learned neither Vestry Books nor Vestry Registers survived the colonial period. There are some more modern records extant. Hope this helps a bit. Hopefully others will "chime in" , Bill Hunt ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edwin "Tex" Irvin" <edwirvin@yahoo.com> To: <VABEDFOR@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2008 4:57 AM Subject: [VABEDFOR] Orphan Christopher Irvine 1769 > >From the index of the Bedford Court Order Books, there are two seperate > >entries: First--"1769, church wardens bind Christopher Irvin, poor > >orphan, to John Irvin." 2. Hello, Rena, I always receive your emails through the Bedford County listserv and appreciate them very much. I will be visiting Blacksburg this coming Thursday through Sunday morning to chaperone several high school students who will be performing in an honor concert at Tech on Saturday evening. I will have a lot of free time all day Friday and on Saturday morning and would like to drive over to the library that you have mentioned that is on S. Jefferson St. in Roanoke. Is that a fairly easy library to locate for someone like me who knows nothing about the area? I am coming from the Eastern part of VA. but my mother's family is all from Bedford and Roanoke. Thanks so much. Cheryl Hummer Chesapeake, VA

    3. List, I'm getting frustrated with myself at this point. Please pardon me while I say I goofed again! We do believe Mary Polly Burnett's mother was Nancy Pendleton. I got that right. However, the statement that Pryor Pendleton was the witness of her marriage to John Burnett was wrong: Pryor Pendleton was the witness at Jonathan and Mary Polly Burnett Boyd's marriage. I have been rather anxious to get the information posted since it's been almost a year of gathering enough information to post. I guess my haste is not paying off right now! I appreciate your patience, Michelle ----- Original Message ----- From: Michelle Ligon To: vabedfor@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 10:53 AM Subject: Re: [VABEDFOR] Joseph Boyd b. And, while the marriage record for John Burnett shows Nancy's maiden name as "Pennington," we believe Nancy's last name was Pendleton. Pryor Pendleton was the witness, possibly Nancy's uncle. 3. Hello, I am wondering if the List could assist me with tracing Joseph Boyd m. Nancy Aaron. Here is the information I have on them and their children. I have more info on other descendants and will post that in the future. Thank you in advance, Michelle Ligon U2 Joseph Boyd b. abt 1770-1780* (Bedford Co. or Franklin Co, VA**), (son of, we THINK, Joseph Boyd of Bucks Co., PA, and ?? [nee ?? ] Boyd), d. abt 1852 (Russell Co., VA), buried, probably in New Garden, Russell Co., VA, m abt 1800 (probably Franklin County), Nancy (probably Aaron***, though no proof exists so far), dau of , we THINK, William and Elizabeth (nee ? ) Aaron, b. / /1774 in Albemarle Co., VA, d. aft 20 Aug 1870, at least age 96, in Honaker, Russell Co., VA, buried, probably in Honaker, Russell Co., VA. *It is held by some that Joseph was born abt 1769-1770, and the 1850 Russell Co. census supports this. HOWEVER, the two previous censuses in Patrick Co. and Russell Co. do not. They consistently put Joseph in an age category that would show he was born 1780-1790. Since Jonathan was born in 1801, it is more likely that it was not later than 1780. ** Franklin County was formed from Bedford County in 1785. It is unlikely that Joseph was born as late as 1785, since he would have been only 16 years of age at Jonathan's birth in 1801. So we BELIEVE his birthplace was Bedford Co. although he reports Franklin Co. to the 1850 census-taker. *** Aaron is the maiden name for Nancy which has been passed down through several different (and distant) branches of this family. For now, that information provides us a lead in our continuing search for proof. Joseph and Nancy Aaron Boyd lived in Patrick Co., VA (until at least 1830) and New Garden, Russell Co., VA (as of the 1840 census, although some documents of land transactions in Patrick Co. indicate Joseph and family might have left there in 1830), and had issue: V1 Jonathan A. Boyd, b. 8 Sep 1801 (Patrick Co., VA), d. 18 Apr 1892 (Honaker, Russell Co., VA), buried Jonathan Boyd Cemetery (Honaker), m. 18 Sep 1828 (Patrick Co., VA), Mary Polly Burnett, dau of John and Elizabeth (nee Tate) Burnett, b. 12 Apr 1813 (Patrick Co., VA), d. 24 May 1896 (Honaker, Russell Co., VA), buried in Jonathan Boyd Cemetery. V2 Elizabeth Boyd, b. abt 1804 (Patrick Co., VA), d. aft 1880 (Menifee Co., KY), buried, probably in Menifee, m. bef 1831 (Russell Co., VA), Henry Peck, son of George and Catherine (nee Wysor) Peck, b abt 1801 (Montgomery Co., VA), d abt 1860 (Russell Co., VA), buried probably Russell Co. V3 Nancy Boyd, b. abt 1806 (Patrick Co., VA), d bef 1880 (Russell Co., VA), buried probably Russell Co., VA, m abt 1829-30 (possibly in Russell Co., VA) Abraham Reynolds, son of Henry and Ann (nee Ward) Reynolds, b. 1798 (Maryland), d. abt 1860 (Russell Co., VA), buried, probably in Russell Co., VA. V4 Robert Boyd, b. abt 1810 (Patrick Co., VA), d 1870-1880 Powell Co., KY, buried probably Powell Co., m bef 1835 (Russell Co., VA) Nancy MNU , b 1815 (Wythe Co., VA), d 1870-1880 (Powell Co., KY), buried probably Powell Co. V5 Patience Boyd, b. abt 1812 (Patrick Co., VA), d. abt 1872, Wolfe Co., KY, buried probably Wolfe Co., KY, m. abt 1842 (Russell Co., VA) William Helton, son of George and Malinda (nee Wade) Helton, b. 1824 (Patrick Co., VA), d. abt 1868 (Wolfe Co., KY), buried probably Wolfe Co., KY. V6 Rosanna Boyd, b. abt 1815 (Patrick Co., VA), d aft 5 Jun 1880 (Wolfe Co., KY), buried probably Wolfe Co., KY, never married.
