    1. Re: [VABEDFOR] Williams/Ayres

    3. HI All Sorry to be coming in here late. Roger Williams, who sued his son's estate was (I think) Roger b. 1749 d. 1835 m Cassie Blair, 1775 Amherst Co VA. Thomas, his son, was one of 10 children, as far as I can tell. That Thomas Williams b. 1777 m Elizabeth Woodson, daughter of Anderson Williams, on 13 Dec 1805 Campbell Co Va. He died before 1733 and left at least sons, William, Thomas, John, Samuel and Woodson Williams. This is not my direct line. Roger's grandfather is most likely the brother of my line. I think the immigrant was Roger b. in Wales, d. in VA, but not proven. That Roger seems to have had 3 sons, perhaps more and most likely daughters, but the records are lost. There seems to be an alliance between Thomas Williams b. 1712 d. aft Jul 1794 and bef 1806 in Goochland Co VA. He married Susanna Anderson. They had a number of children. Mine, Samuel m. Susanna Ligon 1766, daughter of William Ligon.. Their son Anderson Williams was born about 1767 in Cumberland Co VA d. aft 1860 bef 1870 in Botetourt Co VA. Anderson married Mildred Shepard 18 Dec 1786 in Cumberland Co VA. At some point, they apparently moved to NC for a period of time, but I can find no records of them there. But I come from his son, Samuel, who claimed in some censuses to have been born in NC. IF he was born in NC, they were back in VA by the time he married. Samuel married and then his son, Charles Anderson Williams. These migrated from Goochland, perhaps as far south as NC as Samuel claimed he was born in NC but I find no records of them there. They show up again by the time Samuel is marrying. He married Lucy S. Lewis 25 Dec. 1821 in Campbell Co VA. The lived, for the most part, in Botetourt, although I've found them in both Bedford and Campbell and often with the other line's family, so apparently either I have it incorrect, or they stayed in touch, however. There is also more than one Mastin Williams and I have not tied them together. One appears in Charlotte Co then moves to Campbell, though in reality, the move may have been more like the line shifting again, slightly. I have one Mastin Williams, son of Thomas Williams and ? Frances? Nugent?, b.1767=68 in Charlotte Co VA d. 1850 in Allen Co KY. That Mastin married Amy/Aime Collins, d/o Richard Collins and Mary Madison. I come from that couple's daughter, Catherine Collins who married William P. Hamlett, 16 Jun 1785 in Charlotte Co VA. While I have David married to Elizabeth Ayers, did he also marry a Susannah? Does anyone have this David Williams parents? Just food for thought. Mastin only fell into my family by way of marrying Aime Collins. But I have a line of Williams were Roger, Thomas, Samuel, Anderson, Samuel Charles Anderson Williams b. 1823 VA d. 1880 Botetourt Co VA m. Minerva Jane Craddock 10 Jan 1854 Montgomery Co VA, Willie Craddock Williams b. 1864 Botetourt d. 12 Dec 1917 Lynchburg VA. She married Daniel D. Moon 1886 in Pittsylvania Co VA, in the northern part, adj to Campbell Co. They were my GGgrandparents. I also have at least 3 other lines of undetermined William's, which drive me nuts! My research in Virginia is new compared to New England, but I've already received two posts that greatly increased what I have to work with. Your poll tax list not only has Williams, but also a Dunn and I will study it many times for more names. There was a note on the bottom about more to come. Is that Edwin's note, or someone else's? > Shrewsbury's father David WILLIAMS is another person I'm looking for more info about. I have b. 13 Feb 1748 in Franklin County, Virginia. Does anyone have his parents info and his death date? Siblings? Is there any connection between David and Thomas? They were somewhat contemporaries it appears. Which area was settled first, franklin/Bedford Counties or Prince George County? Sorry for all the questions. Every little bit counts. Pamela

    3. Anna, Susan & the rest of us! For as long as this list has been going I have proudly and faithfully been a subscriber and hopefully a cooperative participant. The feeling of family and support is outstanding, really unbelievable!! I can't imagine all we would have not been able to gather, exchange, and record without this wonderful feeling of family. The internal support is amazing and many times Susan and Rootsweb don't see it, because we are exchanging data privately by email and postal service. For decades I have participated actively in local government and seen many attempts at organizing and running community organizations, some that have been successful and many that have failed for many a reason. The ones that have done the best and stayed the course the longest have been those that generate a real feeling of comradeship and family. We have that with this Overstreet list, and it would be a real shame to lose it, or have it altered so we would not be able to have the free flow of exchange that is so open and not overwhelming. I have one occasion wondered what would happen without this wonderful leader at the helm. The answer isn't an easy one, and I sure do hope Susan out lasts me and my involvement in this most enjoyable and meaningful activity. We may not fit the precise rules of Rootsweb, but I'll bet we have one of the largest and most productive groups that are under the umbrella of Rootsweb!! I would be glad to talk with Anna, or her properly identified representative, about this subject if she might so desire. Any comments not clearly marked as being those of the transcriber are either those of the author or of a work cited by the author. The names in the tithe lists have been rendered precisely as found in the published text. It must be stressed that any suggestions as to alternative spellings or questioning that occur within the tithe lists are those of the author. The full text is presented in this transcription with the exception of the index. Each year is contained in its own file. Footnotes are rendered in brackets; page numbers are rendered in braces. Any parenthetical text has been rendered using the brackets or parentheses that appear in the published text. Between pp. 58 and 59 of the published text there appears a fold-out map of Lunenburg County as it existed in 1748, overlaid with the tithe subdivisions and the counties that were created from the original territory of Lunenburg county. A textual representation of the map, together with explanatory text, appears in Part 2 at the end of page 58, but prior to the start of the list of tithes. No copyright notice was printed in the published text. {page 57} CHAPTER TWO LIST OF TITHES, LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1748, 1749, 1750, 1751 The lists of tithes for the years 1748, 1749, 1750 and 1751 embrace the entire area of ancient Lunenburg or the whole of the County, before it suffered any loss of territory, by the subdivision of its area into other counties. In other words, these lists embrace the census of tithables of the area which is now embraced in whole or in part in eleven counties. These counties are Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Patrick, Franklin, Campbell, Bedford and Appomattox. Campbell and Bedford Counties embrace a little territory not originally within Lunenburg, while only about a fourth of the area of Appomattox is from territory originally within Lunenburg County. It is believed that all the lists for all these years except 1751 have been found, and are embraced herein. Only four lists for 1751 have been discovered. There were almost certainly four, and very probably five other lists for this year, which have not been found. A map of the County as it was when organized in 1746, and as it stood in 1748, is herewith presented. It is laid off into precincts for the taking of tithes that year. The boundaries of these precincts cannot be drawn with exact certainty, but from a study of the map and the brief description of the orders designating the territory within which each justice should take the lists, an approximation of the boundaries of the precincts has been attempted. It is felt they are, at least, accurate enough to serve a useful purpose. The designation of these precincts indicates that the most thickly populated area of Lunenburg County at that time was that section north of Roanoke River westward to Falling Creek, {page 58} and that probably the most thickly settled part of that territory was that lying upon the watershed of Meherrin River. The site of John Phelps' precinct from Falling River westward indicates that this was sparsely settled; and this was true in greater degree of the precinct of Cornelius Cargill. Theoretically his precinct embraced, presumably, all the territory from Butcher's Creek westward, and in the Forks of Roanoke (and Dan) rivers, and from the North Carolina line northward to the boundaries of other precincts, and westward to the limits of the County. But probably such inhabitants as were then in the area were clustered in and about "the fork" of the river. There were probably but few persons then resident in what is now Patrick, Henry, Franklin and a considerable part of Halifax Counties. By reference to this map, the designation of precincts in later years, and to the list of Tithables of the several precincts in these later years, one can appreciate the extent of the influx of population into this section. There was an enormous surge of immigration from the valley of the James, from the eastward; in fact, from all the older parts of Virginia, as well as from Maryland and Pennsylvania. The waves of this tide of immigrants flowed in and filled the land, many making but a temporary pause. As already pointed out, these pioneers and their children by countless thousands passed on into North Carolina, and into the territory that is now Kentucky; they helped to populate South Carolina and Georgia; they furnished a large percentage of the inhabitants of Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois; and more recently still all of the newer parts of the United States. more to follow later

POLL LIST 1748 Brunswick Co. was created by Act of Assembly in 1720 from Prince George County (see Robinson, Virginia Counties, p. 76) with additions from Isle of Wight and Surry in 1732. The first court for Brunswick was held May 2, 1732, from which the records of this county date. The following poll list for 1748 gives the names of the resi- dents of Brunswick voting for representatives in the House of Burgesses for the sessions of October, 1748, and April, 1749, and which resulted in the election of Sterling Clack and Drury Stith. 3. Note: It must be remembered that very few native Americans (Indians) lived in Southwest Va. during the time of the Indian Wars, just a few small pockets. East Tennessee (NC at the time) and Southwest Va/Ky was used by both the Cherokee and Northern Indians as hunting grounds.. Each time the British government made a new treaty with the Indians, the lines moved further west and settlers moved in.. Some brave settlers went beyond the treaty lines and staked out land claims hoping their claims would be recognized when the larger land surveys were made. Sometimes they lost their cleared land and cabins when the surveyors arrived... Some literature paints pictures of the settlers on the Holston and other western waters as horse theives and scoundrels but if you will read the court records of southwest Va., you will find that the large majority of these people were fine upstanding men who became honored statesmen in Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.. It was from these early settlers that the men of Kings Mountain came and won a decisive battle of the Rev. War.. GLH You are absolutely correct, Lee. The vast majority of the pioneers were decent people. The first thing they built, after their homesteads, was a meeting house for a Church. There were scoundrels and outlaws, like any other place in the world, then and now, but frontier justice was swift and severe. James Patton was granted many thousands of acres by the Crown, some near Blacksburg, (Draper's Meadows) and other lands across the mountains. After the various wars, treaties were signed with the Indians and migration and settlement was forbidden. We all know how that worked out. We more or less reneged on all of them. Poor families would not be denied. They went anyway, in search of cheap lands. Some of them paid a terrible price. Many of the original patents, granted by Patton and others, were litigated in courts for a hundred years. The fledgling Republic had been so intertwined with British law and practices for so long, it took generations to settle all of the disputes. The pioneers dragged the "government" along behind them. And eventually dragged "civilization" all the way to the Pacific. The Capt. William Campbell of the 1st Virginia soon became a General and was famous at the battle of King's Mountain. He was a brother in law of Patrick Henry. Later Campbell county was named after him, posthumously, at the suggestion of Patrick Henry. I have access to many old publications and would be more than happy to look someone up. I try to stay focused on the old Brunswick/Lunenburg area. Just don't expect an immediate response. I work all the time. Edwin

    3. What I have been looking for is more information on that whole area, like the militia lists. They are the nearest thing to a census that many of us have to rely on. My person in Dunmore's War was a poor scrub farmer. I suspect his wife was Native American. I can't find her name. Their son married a woman of East Indian maternal ancestry and is referred to as Native American, and Melungeon. Their daughter married a Cherokee. Many of the traders had Indian families along with their white ones. Indian women told of the coming attacks on some of the forts because they loved their men inside. It was a very mixed culturally society in that area at that time. There were also escaped slaves that were taken in by the Indians who then assimilated into their culture. Some of us will never get their Native American families found working in that area, but we keep trying. Some of the Virginians went down to the North of Holston Settlements and demanded that everyone take an oath - I think it was to the state of VA or some such thing - well, many refused and were forced to leave the settlement. I think it was Richard Pearis who led them out and they went down to SC around Greeneville. After the war I think Pearis left the US. I don't remember if anyone went with him, but I bet they did, probably Loyalists. Some of those people came back up to NE TN. Loyalists were those loyal to King George and usually shop keepers and such. Tories were marauders who just operated outside of the law against everyone. Rebels were the winners and became patriots. There really is no way of figuring out for sure which was which without provincial records, because many were Rebels/Patriots and Loyalists, both. It depended whose "Ox was being gored" at the time. It also, depended how each poor scrub farmer's actions were perceived, and by whom. It was a civil war down there! I have found that many of the people in Upper East TN, Western NC, but not so much SW VA were in that time and place running from something. maybe birth circumstances, debt, the law for whatever reason...and this makes it so very difficult to find hide or hair of them. To compound things there was so much misunderstanding among the races. I can prove white and red and don't know about black, but the dna has not shown any. East Indians were perceived as Black, as were many Native Americans. There was slaughter on all sides. It was horrible and went on for a long time after the "end" of the Revolution. Read the Provincial and State Papers of the states that were formed out of the area. They will make your hair stand on end, but you will get the true story, not someone's conception of it. Please forgive my generalities. I am going from memory. I have read and re-read much of our miserable killing of each other trying to find my people, that what I have mostly remembered is movement and migration for tracking purposes. Jeanne jbass@digital.net wrote: > And you can imagine what happened to the slaves that helped him. Perhaps I should have clarified it better. Of course, Dunsmore's war was against the Indians. He personally led half of an 1100 man force of militia, almost all southwest Virginians, against Shawnee Chief Cornstalk. Andrew Lewis commanded the other half. Some old historians, probably in error, believed Dunsmore was in secret alliance with the Shawnees to butcher the Virginians in an ambush, because the rebellion was brewing. Dunsmore did not personally get too close to the fighting. 75 Virginians were killed and 150 wounded. Immediately after the battle, Dunsmore treated with the Indians and let Cornstalk off the hook. Hence the conspiracy theories. A few years later, during the Rev. War, Cornstalk was captured and put in jail. The kin of many he had butchered broke into the jail and killed the old Indian who had slaughtered so many settlers. Before some of the militia had gotten home, the "shot heard round the world" >> was fired at Concord, and the rest is history. Dunsmore later evacuated Williamsburg and set up in Norfolk. He scrounged up an army of 600 British regulars, many tidewater tories, and forced slaves to fight with a promise of freedom. Bedford county and others raised the 1st Va. Militia regiment, commanded by Col. Patrick Henry and Capt. William Campbell, (Campbell county was named after him) late in 1775, and marched to Norfolk to deal with Dunsmore's shenanigans. Dunsmore was finally forced off the continent, and spent a few weeks on a ship in the harbor, before finally leaving for good, I think, in the summer of 1776. And you can imagine what happened to the slaves that helped him.
