More on my particular branch of the Irvin/Tucker marriages. This website is kept by a friend of mine. She is very cautious and documented in her conclusions. But as you can see, there are some questions. Edwin http://www.duke.edu/web/chlamy/tucker.html
There is much about the Adams family in "Campbell Chronicles," by Ruth Early. The book is online at Ancestry.com Edwin
I'm sure you Tucker researchers have seen this website, but just in case-- http://www.rootsweb.com/~vadinwid/tucker/tucker-idx.htm My gggg-grandmother was Louisa Tucker, who married orphan Christoper Irvin. She was the daughter of Matthew Tucker. Another one of the Hat Creek Irvins married her sister. I know very little of the first couple of years of Christopher and Louisa's marriage. They had two sons, Charles Mallory (mine) and Isaiah Tucker. They were married in Amherst county, and Louisa died shortly after giving birth to Isaiah in 1783-84? Edwin
Hi Helen - Looks like someone has done some good work. I hope someday I can push my line back that far. To Sheila Murnahan, I ws curious when you said that half of your ancestors were from Bedford and half from Amherst. My family is the same. Names are McDaniel, Robinson, Hudnall, Tucker, Whiddon just to name a few. Any connections? Cheryl Hummer
My husband's family goes back to Thomas Gray born 1595 in England and Margaret Annis born 1599 in England. There are a lot of William's , John's in the family. The Gray family is so large that I would not be able to send it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Gray" <revjgray@wowway.com> To: <vabedfor@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2008 5:35 PM Subject: Re: [VABEDFOR] Old books on Google > Hello Helen - > > My John Gray 1785-1855 was married in Monroe Co., VA(WV) Sep 1816 and > came to Ohio with his wife Susanna Thompson and her family before > 1820. Hello Helen - My John Gray 1785-1855 was married in Monroe Co., VA(WV) Sep 1816 and came to Ohio with his wife Susanna Thompson and her family before 1820. There is a large family of Gray's in the Monroe/Greenbrier area and he may belong to them, but when I visited the area a couple of years ago I found nothing that connected. I have the large genealogy on that family and there are a lot of John Gray's but they are all accounted for and none match my man exactly. There was a George Gray who came from Botetourt to Greenbrier before my John was born and because the name George is strong in our family he may be the man I am looking for. This George was married to Mary Davis or Davies, but I cannot find the names of his children anywhere. There is a John Gray and a Mary Davis in Australia but they are not the right couple. When I visit VA this summer I will be looking for a baptism, Family Bible, will, estate record, etc., for this George. I have been tracking the The Bedford Co. Gray's for some time, but nothing connects there yet. I will be looking mostly for Burgandine's in Bedford and Montgomery Counties. Re the subject of Moza Peters who married Martha Coppedge with son Clifton Coppedge Peters who was born in 1807 in Amherst & died in Bedford Co: Does anyone have info on a much earlier Moses Peter whose daughter Mary Peter married 1697 Thomas Hardy (1670-1717) Isle of Wight Co VA? The Moses/Moza Peter/s name was later carried in both the Hardy and Jeter families in Bedford Co. Thanks, Judy Gabor

Don Hill and others Thanks for Coppedge info. My Mary Coppedge Dameron married Bennett K Stansell, 1828, in Newton Ga. The Damerons had drifted from Va and NC into Georgia. Great stuff on Franklin county, Bill. I did not know that. And you are correct about the other counties. The early county lines were ill defined and fluctuated back and forth. Early Brunswick is a prime example. If we think we "know" where the line was at any give date, we are probably wrong. The Governor or the Assembly would "proclaim" the defined boundaries back in Williamsburg. But the actual implementation and surveying were often quite different, and even then, they moved back and forth. The southern boundary of Brunswick was fixed by the survey of William Byrd at the NC/Va. staight line, in 1729/30. But Brunswick was tentatively "proclaimed" some ten years before the survey. The southern boundary was the easy part after Byrd. People will tell us that the western boundary of Brunswick was at the top of the Blue Ridge, just beyond the present line of western Bedford. This was not the case. "Brunswick County was to extend sufficiently westward to the Blue Ridge to include in it's limits the Southern Pass, located near the head of the Roanoke River. The pass, in present day Floyd County, was later known as Wood's Gap and Jarman's Gap." This was the "tail" that extended beyond the Blue Ridge. The Great Valley was just about empty at this time. I suspect they were not sure where the "head" of the Roanoke was in 1720. Which fork, for example. The same was true of the pass at the James. At that time they thought these two passes were the only way through, and they were "funnels" for the Indians. The northern and eastern boundaries were just as confusing. "Until the governor shall settle a Court in Brunswick, the justices of Prince George County shall take power over them by their warrants, and the clerks of the said Court by their processes....in the same manner as before the said county was constituted..." So we have twelve years or more when governance of eastern Brunswick was by Prince George. And the northern boundary is beyond description here. Goochland, Amelia, Albemarle. The boundary moved from the Appomattox, to south of the Appomattox, then back up to the Appomattox, then back up to the James. And the lapse in the building of the new courthouses, and the surveys, adds to the problem. Knowing which county your very early kin lived in is a crapshoot. And the old original Brunswick was the size of Massachusetts. The one constant in all this is that the Assembly always figured out a way to collect the taxes, no matter where you lived. Ha. Some things never change. Edwin
I hope this works. I have no clue what I'm doing with this new scanner. Excerpt from the Neale book on Brunswick county. And please. I do not know the proof of this. I have not researched this line. They are not my kin. Edwin HISTORY OF CLERKS OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY bv rose angelyn poarch Biographical sketches of the Clerks of Brunswick Countya record of ovei 50 yearsas taken from the "Petersburg Weekly Index-Appeal, Sept. 6, 1888." DRURY STITH The first clerk of the county was Drury Stith. Having been commissioned by Hon. Charles Carter, Secretary of Virginia, this, the first incumbent of the clerkship of the County of Brunswick, qualified as clerk on the 11th day of May, 1732, and held the office until his death in June, 1740. He was the Col. Drury Stith mentioned by Col. Wm. Byrd in "A journey to the land of Eden" (Westover mss.) in the paragraph wherein the author, under the date of Sept. 13, 1733, says: "By the way, I sent a runner half a mile out of the road to Col. Drury Stith's, who was so good as to come to us. We cheered our hearts with three bottles of pretty good Madeira, which made Drury talk very hopefully of his copper mine. We easily prevailed with him to let us have his company, upon condition we would take the mine in our way." The subject of this sketch was a son of John Stith of Charles City County, a man of prominence and influence in the Colony as early as 1616 a fact attested by his being disfranchised along with Col. Edward Hill of the same county by the adherents of Nathaniel Bacon by an act of assembly passed during the period of Bacon's rebellion (Chap, xx, Bacon's laws, 2 Henning's Statutes at Large, Page 364), but which along with other acts and orders of the same assembly was subsequently annulled by a royal proclamation, Col. John Stith subsequently (in 1693) holding office in the Colony as a member of the house of burgesses. Col. Drury Stith was an uncle of Rev. Wm. Stith, the historian, and in subsequent generations, during the last one hundred and fifty years, has been represented by a large number of descendants in Virginia and other southern states, among them many persons of public and private life. His son, Drury Stith, represented the County of Brunswick in the house of Burgesses in 1748. Of the descendants of Col. Drury Stith at least eight became clerks certainly the following: Griffin Stith, one of the early clerks of the County Court of Northampton. Drury Stith, Charles Turnbull, Edward Randolph Turnbull, Robt. Turnbull, respectively the ninth, fourteenth, and sixteenth clerks of the county court of Brunswick, Edward Randolph Turnbull, Jr., the first clerk of the circuit court of Brunswick after the separation of the offices, David Meade Bernard, the second clerk of the corporation court of Petersburg and John Randolph Stith one of the clerks of the county court of Northumberland.
