Hi Sandra, What book did you find William Saunders in? I have an in-law named William Saunders who was in the War of 1812 and he might be the same one as yours. Here you go, Velma: You can read this book for free. http://books.google.com/books?id=wOQ0AAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=History+of+Virginia+by+William+Stith&as_brr=1 Or if you prefer, you can buy a first edition at Abebooks. Ha. My first ten cars together did not cost this much. 13. THE HISTORY OF THE FIRST DISCOVERY AND SETTLEMENT OF VIRGINIA: BEING AN ESSAY TOWARDS A GENERAL HISTORY OF THIS COLONY. Signatures X, Cc, and Dd tanned (as usual in this issue), else very clean. A very good copy. The first edition, second issue, of Stith's book, one of the first American histories to be written and printed in the British colonies, and the first such in Virginia. Stith, who was well connected in the colony, had access to numerous important sources, including the library of William Byrd of Westover, the personal recollections of Sir John Randolph, county court books, the official records of the London Company, and John Smith's seminal GENERALL HISTORIE OF VIRGINIA. Printing began in Virginia when William Parks established his press at Williamsburg in 1730. This is one of the earliest accessible Virginia imprints, and one of the most interesting. I'm just pointing out what a "priceless" resource Google books are. Absolutely free. Now, I've read that Microsoft wants in on the act of digitizing old books, and have offered $41 billion for Yahoo to get started. Ain't the internet grand? We, as researchers, can only benefit. Edwin
One more: Five thousand names and some surprising side notes. http://books.google.com/books?id=wiUQAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=Justices+of+the+Peace&lr=&as_brr=1 Read the text leading up to the lists to understand the historical context and political wranglings leading up to the Rev. War. It won't take long. And don't forget to type in a surname in the little search box on the side. You can download most of these old books and print them. That's if you can afford the printer cartridges. Ha. Edwin

One more time--- Google has many hundred of old books digitized online in their entirety. Just go to google.com Up top you will see the little "more" arrow. Pull that down and click on "books." If you click "full view", you will see entire, complete books. "Limited view" will show you books that have only certain pages that are viewable. You can type whatever you want into the little search box up top. Under "full view" type in "genealogy" and you will get 50 pages of old publications pertaining to genealogy. Or type in History of Virginia, or Kentucky, or Sketches of, or Family Histories, Or Notes from, or any other guidance, and you will be able to read many goodies. To the lower right, after you open a book you want to search, there is usually another little search box. Type in your surname and pages will pop up where the name is mentioned. Or you can turn the pages with your scroll button. Don't ignore the limited view. You may get lucky. And if they do not have a certain book, they will tell you where you can buy it or which libraries have it. Google is a great resource, but remember, most of these old publications are very flawed. Always find collateral proof. Edwin
Good Morning Elaine go to www.google.com Left click on "more" and get a drop down menu Left click on "Books" enter your search term such as "Virginia" When you get the list which should be large the left click on" Full View" This gives you all the books that you can download free. County Formation and Boundary History Bedford County was formed in 1754 from the northwest part of Lunenburg and a small part of Albemarle. In 1755 the Act creating Bedford County specifies that "Lunenburg be divided, from the mouth of Falling River up the said river to the fork, thence up the fork running by John Beard's to the head...and all that part of said Lunenburg shall be called by the name of Bedford..." [The Old Free State pg 142]. The border between Lunenburg and Albemarle was the divide between the James and Roanoke River watersheds. After Bedford was formed, this border was found to be impractical, and a line was drawn in 1756 from Flood's Mountain (one of the "Appomattox River Mountains") to the mouth of Stonewall Creek on the James River and all former Albemarle land southwest of that line and south of the James was added to Bedford. New London, previously the county seat of Lunenburg, was Bedford's first county seat. Later, Amherst was formed from the northern section of Bedford, lying between Bedford on the south, and Albemarle on the north. Then, in 1781, Campbell Co. was formed from the remaining eastern part of Bedford, including the town of New London, and the county seat was moved to Liberty, later named Bedford City. In 1786, a southwestern part of Bedford County, and northern part of Henry County, were divided to form Franklin County. Some Bedford related records before its 1754 formation may be found in earlier Brunswick, Lunenburg, Albemarle and later in Amherst, Campbell and Franklin Counties, after the dates each of those were created from Bedford This is the general drift. It was a little more complicated than the above. Much of modern Appomattox county was included in Bedford, especially the area due east of Lynchburg, near Wreck Island Creek, David Creek, etc. Earlier, some of this area was part of old Goochland/Albemarle. Don't assume anything. The line changes defy description here. Edwin

I have found this posting most helpful, but have hit a rather large brick wall. I am searching for information on Joshua Burnett (Burnate/Burnitt and other variants), who was a Baptist Minister in the Strawberry Baptist Association around 1803-1820. Joshua is my 4th Great-Grandfather. Joshua was born about 1773, married in Bedford, later removed to Roanoke, and died at Mason?s Cove in 1852. I have researched him at the Baptist Historical Society in Richmond, but find no evidence of his origin, along with who his Father may have been. Joshua had several children, and his son, Elisha Burnett, Sr., is my 3rd Great-Grandfather, also married in Bedford, but Elisha later removed to Grayson County (which later became Carroll County), re-married, and had a number of sons. I believe Elisha to have been married approximately three (3) times. Joshua mentions Elisha in his will, but gives his portion of the estate to Elisha?s daughter, Nancy Jane Leonard (Nancy Jane Burnett married a James Leonard), instead. Is anyone researching this line, or have any information on these Burnetts? I have seen information (nothing proven, only online family trees that have been out there and copied, according to the owners of these online trees) that suggests that Joshua was born in Dinwiddie; however, further investigation proves a Joshua Burnett in Dinwiddie was in the 1830 Census at the same time ?my Bedford Joshua? was in the 1830 Census in Botetourt (my Joshua did live and preach there for a time). In 1840, ?Dinwiddie Joshua? is between 60 and 70 years old, a female is between 50 and 60, with a female under 5 in the household. In 1850, ?Dinwiddie Joshua? is gone, and ?Bedford Joshua? is in Roanoke. I think all of this is further complicated by the fact that ?both Joshuas? had wives named Sarah, and these ?Joshuas? died within four (4) years of each other! Thank you in advance for any assistance, as it is very greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Barbara Crockett New Researching New, Burnett, Turner, Clifton, Felts, Land, Newman and associated lines ------------------------------ To contact the VABEDFOR list administrator, send an email to VABEDFOR-admin@rootsweb.com. Hi all. Would someone tell me how to google Old Books on Google? Just specify area? Thanks. Elaine Suhre
Dear Friends, I have had several requests for lookups and would be happy to do it. It would be helpful if when requesting info you could mention several first names in the family you are searching within a time frame. Several of these Surnames have over 20 people in them. I can give you the names listed in the index for a family if you would pick which ones you want me to look up. Otherwise, I'll be typing all day. Thanks, Linda Lang
Dear Linda Curnutte, On pg H-147 under the Abraham Huddleston chapter: "Land: 1784 Oct 23 Bedford...Jonas Jordan Sr to Abraham Huddleston for 120 pounds...300 a. on Stony Fork of Goose Creek adj Stith, Elber, Bulah, Basham, Cundiff, Absolum Jordon & Jonas Jordan (DB 10:198)" On page P-211 under Surname Patterson: Marriage record for Esther Patterson -"Esther m. 1-18-1791 Bedford (1/15 bond, d/o Joseph, Jonas Jordan Surety), Reuben Standley" There isn't mention of Benj or Hiram in the index.
