To JTL: Try these old books on Google. There are many more there. I believe I have posted some of these before. But be cautious. One book may contradict the next. I know I have seen Rev. David Rice's father listed as three different names. There are probably many volumes of the Presbyterian Magazine online, and William Foote's work has been quoted millions of times by genealogists. But there are some errors. Great reading, though. Oh wow!!! Didn't expect all the response and not nearly this quickly. Not firing on all cylinders at the moment as we're down with the cold on steroids/flu that's going around here. Will save all your emails and absorb what you've shared when my brain is fully functional. I'll be continuing to research this group, so if there's anything I can do for you in the future, all you have to do is ask. Thanks again and I'm so glad I joined the list!!! I would also be interested in learning more on the "Old Side" v "New Lights" debate as it related to Bedford and Prince Edward Counties VA. Rev. John Thomson, a founder of numerous Presbyterian churches in the Central Virginia region prior to 1750, was one of the leading ideologues supporting the "Old Side" doctrine. His son-in-law Rev. Richard Sankey brought many of his Hanover Congregation to the area in 1758? to escape the depredations of the Indians in the early years of the French and Indian War. There are many who believe their ancestors were originally members of the Thomson/Sankey churches in Pennsylvania, and migrated to Virginia with them - implying that they, too, were "Old Siders." There is a list of those who accompanied Sankey, but not for those who had earlier followed Thomson. In the Lunenburg Tithables, taken by William Caldwell in 1749, there are several Franklins.--James, Lewis, Edward, and Thomas. There was a Thomas Franklin who later fought in the Rev. War. Maybe a son? Sorting out all their possible children will be a chore. I also have the following marriages, all in Campbell county. I have no clue whose children or grand children these are. Dec. 22, 1800. Robert Franklin m. Mary Perrow April 23, 1802. John Robertson m. Nancy Franklin Mar. 8, 1803. John Roper m. Margaret Franklin Mar. 15, 1804 John Fleming m. Jane Franklin Dec. 19, 1805. Thomas North m. Sarah Franklin Not much help, I'm afraid. Edwin
In the latter half of the 1700's, the Presbyterian Church had a great theological schism between "old school" and "new school." I believe this was due to the rise of Revivalism. I've read the Peaks of the Otter Church split in half, with the "old school" adherents forming the Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Geographically, where exactly in the county was the Pisgah Church? I'm guessing it would be near New London? Also, where was the Peaks of Otter Church? And I would love to see a list containing the original members of both churches. I know some of the ministers--Revs. David Rice, James Mitchell, Benjamin Holt Rice, and others. Any help out there? Edwin

As requested by Bill Connor, I'm writing to correct an error in the Point Pleasant participants list. I've seen it before, and didn't try to get it altered, but the listing of Col. William Fleming as having been killed at Point Pleasant is erroneous. He was gravely wounded and was expected to die, but did indeed survive to return home. He was unable to continue as a military surgeon, much less command a force, but he was able to serve on the Committee of Safety during the Rev. War., and was said to have stood as temporary governor of Virginia for two(?) weeks after the resignation of Thomas Jefferson and before Thomas Nelson's acceptance of the office in 1781. According to his grave marker, he died in 1795. In Roanoke, Virginia there is a William Fleming High School, of which I am a graduate, born not far from his burial site on his plantation, in Botetourt County during his time. Check with the Nancy Christian Fleming Chapter of the DAR for further information. Please correct this misinformation about his death in your notes. Thank you. Mary Kegley's Lists are missing - re: David Looney's Co and a few others that have many men from Maryland living North of the Holston who served in the Fincastle Co VA Militia. I suspect there will always be other lists out here. Too bad the Draper manuscripts have not been published in their entirely - not just a catalog. It would go very far in reconstructing this most important area and time of the development of our country. Jeanne Edwin "Tex" Irvin wrote: > In reference to my posting of the list of men in the Battle of Point Pleasant: I'm told by Carolyn that Col. William Fleming survived the battle though gravely wounded. I suspect there are several errors in the list. I have read that about 75 men died but the lists I have seen never add up to that number. So take all these old publications with a grain of salt. I think I saw Thomas Hamrick and William Hambrick listed as Hammack or Hammick somewhere but can not find my notes. Has any one else seen them this way?
