    1. [VABEDFOR] Clarification on Looms & Weaving Program by PCGS
    2. Alpha Hiatt
    3. We have had the question asked what is a loom? So for those of you who don't know, a loom is a frame for weaving yard of thread into cloth. Our ancestors used looms to make clothing, bedding, and rugs. The women of the household would plant and tend a patch of flax, harvest the crop, spin the yarn, and weave it into linen. They also wove woolen cloth from yarn spun from the fleece of sheep. Linens and woolens were colored with dyes made from certain barks, berries, roots, or walnut hulls. On Tuesday, March 18th at 6:30 p.m., Margaret Smith will present a program on looms and weaving especially the Rock-a-Beater loom for the Patrick County Genealogy Society at the Stuart Site of Patrick Henry Community College on Johnson Street in Stuart in the Community Room. Here's a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how our ancestors used looms for weaving and some of you may very well still have heirlooms handed down in your families that were made on looms. If you do, please bring them to this meeting. We will also work on the PCGS Military Care Packages so bring anything you have to go in these this night. For more information, please call 276-692-5920. We look forward to seeing you on the 18th, and we also want to wish all of you a Happy Easter! 3. Bedford VA order book 6 has record of many patriots who came forth proving they'd furnished supplies for Rev War. May 27th, 1782 must've been a rough day for the clerk when so many packed into David Wright's home that they appear to have been called upon initially by beginning letter of surname. Page 350 shows 23 surname A-C. Page 351 shows 30 surname D-M. Page 352 shows 23 surname M-W. Pages 353-355 show many claims without the ABC order. On page 355 I find: "John Hook pr'd (proved) that he furnished ye militia of this County on their march to join ye Southern Army 5 empty Barrells & one Hogshead for which he is alowed [sic] 8/9." The clerk rarely put a "period" at the end of a record, this period is definite. Sherrie

    1. [VABEDFOR] Tory Robert Cowan
    2. Edwin "Tex" Irvin
    3. Attached is a fascinating little petition presented by Robert Cowan, Justice of the Peace of Bedford county, and unrepentant Loyalist, to the Parliament in England. Cowan returned to Bedford (1778-79?). He apparently continued his Tory ways and was later involved in another conspiracy against the Arsenal in New London. This was in 1780-81? when British troops were approaching the Piedmont from the south and the east. Unfortunately for the Tories, the tide turned in favor of the rebels. Apparently, he eventually reclaimed his estates and all was forgiven after the War. Cowan and others (the infamous John Hook of the "beef' beef, beef" case) filed lawsuits against Charles Lynch and the other "vigilantes" for arresting them. Supposedly, Cowan was fined 20,000? pounds and may have been lashed. The new legislature passed a bill exempting the vigilantes from damages and absolving them of any wrong doing. Cowan became guardian to four Irvine stepdaughters and I guess they lived happily ever after. There are a few pages about this conspiracy in a little book called "Piedmont Apocalypse." We forget sometimes, that many affluent planters wanted to keep the staus quo, and did not support the Patriot cause. Edwin 9Jun1769 Robert Cowan & Elizabeth Irvine (Elizabeth Anthony widow of William Irvine); Isham Talbot, Surety. "Cowan, Robert, Bedford Co., Va. Tobacco planter: settled there with wife and family for 20 years, was a J.P., and had much influence. Refused to take rebel oath, was imprisoned; house surrounded and ransacked; escaped to N.Y. Came from there to England bringing with him bills of exchange which have been protested; With wife and children has deserted a fortune. Memorial: 24 Feb. 1778 London. Granted £100 p.a." Below is a full transcription of the claim. To The Right Honorable The Lords Commissioners of his Majesty’s Treasury The Petition of Robert Cowan Humbly Showeth That your petition having been settled for near twenty years in Bedford County in The Colony of Virginia, had by his industry and application to the benefits of a Tabacco Planter acquired A compliment and easy fortune, in which he was blessed with his wife and family at the commencement Of the present rebellion. That your petitioner having the Honor to hold a Commission of the peace Under his Excellency, The Earl of Dunmore, hath uniformly acted agreeable thereto, and even Distinguished himself by his loyalty to his Sovereign and attachment to the constitution, and having from A long residence in his County possessed a Considerable Influence over the minds of the people, he exerted It on all occasions, to warn them early in this Unhappy dispute, of the Total Consequence attendant On the destructive measures, which their Leaders have so artfully led them into, A conduct so Invariably pursued, and solely dictated by your petitioners high Regard, for the National Rights of both Countries alarmed their leaders and has been the cause of a most crewel and Inveterate persecution Under which your petitioner groaned, Who thus separated in a manner from the Community For their vengeance, on the pretence of his having Joined the Loyalist in North Carolina under Gen. McDonald had his house surrounded and ransacked by a body of armed men, He hath been several Times dragged before their committee, and at last cited to take the oath of allegiance as a Magistrate Under their usurped power, he refused it with indignation, was deprived of his arms and imprisoned. Your petitioner thus horrified in continual and eminent danger of his life, Understandingly they Intended to Confine him to be tried, as a Traitor to their New Constitution, made his escape >From Virginia, and at last got to New York, from whence he Hath Safely arrived here. Your petitioner having brought some Bills of Exchange for his support in Britain has Unfortunately had them protested, inconsequence of which he is Reduced to much distress, and therefore humbly hopes, that having deserted an affluent fortune with his wife and children, Rather than forego his Allegiance to his Country, Your Lordship will be pleased to take his case into Consideration, and Bestow such relief as you may Judge his Particular Case merits and your petitioner as In duty bound will ever pray yea Robert Cowan

    3. There's a marriage bond for Baldwin Farnham and Caroline S. Matthews issued Nov 2, 1836, and they're living together in the 1850 Federal Census. She would not be the mother of the Ayres children. Since he's listed as being a teacher in the 1860 Federal Census, they could be children who were boarding with him in order to get an education, or perhaps relatives of a sister of Caroline's. Neither person is living with Caroline and Baldwin in the 1870 or 1880 Federal Censuses. Cathy

    1. [VABEDFOR] orphan Christopher Irvin/Irvine
    2. Edwin "Tex" Irvin
    3. Four of the great enigmas of my surname.--- From the Bedford Court Order books-- 1769, Church wardens bind out Christopher Irvin, poor orphan, to John Irvin (no father named) 1769, Church wardens bind out Margaret Irvine, doesn't say to whom 1771, Margaret Irvine chose Thomas Overstreet to be her guardian 1775, Christopher Irvine, orphan of Christopher Irvine, chose Harry Terrell as his guardian We have speculated much about these entries. There appear to be no further documents at the Bedford courthouse, and trust me, we have looked. We believe the 1769 Christopher and Margaret are full siblings, along with another possible sibling named William Irvine, probably slightly older. The two entries for the orphan Christopher is a different matter. Some of my group believe these are two seperate orphans named Christopher. While this is entirely possible, I have my doubts. I personally believe, without any proof, that the existence of two seperate orphans named Christopher, six years apart, is unlikely. But I may be wrong. We know for "certain" our Christopher, 1769, was raised, at least part of his youth, by Hat Creek John Irvine. We feel convinced they were kin is some way, but there is no proof. The Harry Terrell issue is a new wrinkle. If the 1775 Christopher is the same Christopher, something had to change in his guardianship. Terrell was an officer in the 5th. Virginia during the Rev. War. A Christopher Irvin (mine?) was also in the 5th, from Feb. 1776 til Mar. 1778. Maybe an underage Christopher was trying to enlist? An apprenticeship? Much speculation; very little solid proof, as to which Christopher is which, or if they are one and the same. The 1769 Christopher was "bound out" by the Church wardens. The 1775 Christopher "chose" Harry Terrell. This implies that in 1775, this Chistopher had reached a certain age of minor consent. Fourteen?? sixteen?? The 1775 Christopher also leaves us with an unidentified deceased Christopher. We have an old Christopher who died in 1769. The common year has led many to suppose that this was the grandfather of the orphan, 1769. But this could just be a coincidence. We know of no son of old Christopher named Christopher. His sons were David of later Kentucky, and "Otter" William, who married Elizabeth Anthony. Who knows? Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Some of my group have been trying to unravel these little riddles for twenty years. The Irvin/Irvine messages boards are loaded with misinformation about my Christopher. We are fairly certain Christopher was a "Commissioner of Provisions" in Bedford/Campbell in the latter years of the War, and for a few years after. He was empowered to impress provisions for the military, and later settle public claims. My orphan married first, Louisa Tucker, in Amherst, then, after her death, Prudence Echols, in Halifax. Christopher and Prudence moved to Wilkes county, Georgia, about 1792-93, with at least four little boys. Georgia is well documented. They all became prosperous planters there. It is the Bedford/Campbell end that needs some work. Waddya think? Edwin
