Hello All, You also have to consider the fact that some Bedford men may have enlisted in (or transferred into) other units that were organized in other counties. For example, one of my Bedford County ancestors, James N. Thomas, served in Fry's Battery of the Orange Light Artillery. Just a thought. Our next PCGS Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Stuart Site of Patrick Henry Community College in the Community Room in Stuart. David Sheley, our President, will do a program on what was going on in Patrick County during the WWII years. This is based on his research for the Patrick County WWII Pictorial Book which he chaired. We will also work on the PCGS Military Care Packages this night, so be sure and bring anything you would like to put in them. Many of the people who lived in Bedford and Franklin Cos. came from the Tidewater. There is a very large Baughn family in Essex Co. in the 1600s and 1700s. I haven't traced them later so I don't know if those in Amherst and Bedford are descendants. I see there are some Mitchell researchers afoot. I have a question. Andrew Irvin married Elizabeth Mitchell in Bedford, in 1774. I know nothing about her family. Andrew was wounded at the siege of York. He and Elizabeth had 10 children. They eventually moved to Kentucky, then finally to Clinton county, Ohio. Andrew died April 25, 1830 in Ohio, age eighty two. Elizabeth was allowed a pension for his services. She died in 1842, age ninety two. I've often wondered who her father was. Or if she was kin to the Rev. James Mitchell who married so many folks in Bedford/Campbell. I believe Andrew and Elizabeth owned land near Difficult Creek, in Bedford. Their children were Robert, Jane, Mary, Stephen Mitchell, Lucinda, Caleb, Joshua, John, Elizabeth, and William. I believe Lucinda was the grandmother of Lucinda Boyd, who later wrote the much quoted (and often wrong) "Irvines and Kin." Edwin
I am looking for any information about Baughan/Baugn or various spellings. There was a Mitchell Baughan who died about 1760's in Amherst Co. May have also been a Samuel Baughan also in Bedford Co. Vaughan is another spelling. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you. Mary

Can you tell me anything about the Nancy Wood that married this Benjamin Mitchell? The Wood surname and particularly Thomas (surety) is of great interest to me. I'm not from any known "Mitchell clan" but became interested in the many, many, discussions of Mitchells in Bedford. If it's any help at all, I looked at the 1787 Personal Property Tax Lists A & B by Schreiner Yantis and Love. List A: John Mitchel (no property) his poll tax charged to Robert Boggs. List B: Stephen Mitchel, Robert Mitchel Jr., Robert Mitchel Sr., Robert Mitchel, John Mitchel Jr., Aquilla Mitchel, John Mitchel Sr., William Mitchel, Enos Mitchel, James Mitchel, Samuel Mitchel, Daniel Mitchel. All 12 men on List B were listed as responsible for their own taxes. The law for 1787 declared age 21 as the legal age for taxation of property. In that case all the men on List B should have been born BY 1766. Since wives and children under 16 were never listed I'd venture a guess all these Mitchels' could have populated their own town! Public Claims: In addition to the above list an Abraham Mitchell and a Thomas Mitchell are listed separately as Bedford County residents who had supplied 250 pounds of beef to the Commissioner of the Provision Law during the Revolution. [I copied from the published lists by Abercrombie and Slatten] Good Luck! Does anyone have information about a Samuel Baughan/Baugn or Vaughan who died about 1776 in Bedford Co. Also Mitchell Baughan/Vaughan who died abt. 1766 and Samuel was administrator of his inventory. Mitchell may have been in Amherst Co. as well. Thank you for any information about these families. Mary
