    1. Lee, Francis Ludwell, Bedford County
    2. Harold
    3. Hello all, Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am looking for any information leading to the parents of Francis Ludwell Lee. Francis married Sallie Moorman in Bedford County in 1804 and moved to Franklin County several years later. Francis and Sallie are my ggg grandparents. One researcher said Francis may have been the overseer of the Lynch farm (plantation?) but did not cite any source(s) for that statement. Francis seems to have disappeared after the 1860 census (probably died but I cannot confirm his death) while Sallie was still alive at the time of the 1880 Census (living with my gg grandfather Samuel E. Lee in Roanoke County). I would appreciate any information that might lead to the parents of Francis or any information about Francis. Once again, thanks for taking the time to read this request. -- Regards, Harold Spammers beware! Unsolicited e-mail subject to a $500 download and archiving fee.

Two other Franklins are listed with no first name and under one of them is an illegible name that might or might not be a third. These three are between a John Fisher and John Foster. That the transcriber found so many names wholly or partially unreadable leads me to believe that there is no good copy of the 1810 Bedford census. John Ottinger

    3. Just a follow-up on Linda's posting to the Bedford list about the historical maps available at the Roanoke Historical Society: These maps were prepared by the late John Hildebrand, a longtime student of VA history. The price is $4 for members and $6 for non-members. You can order from: The Roanoke Valley Historical Society PO Box 1904 Roanoke, VA 24008 540-342-5770 (they do take phone orders with a credit card). Some maps available: Augusta County 1732-1872 37"X23" Bedford County 1750-1865 30"X25" Botetourt County 1770-1820 22"X22" Fincastle County 1772-1777 17"X22" Franklin County 1786-1886 31"X25" Montgomery County 1750-1865 30"X23" Rockbridge County 1778-1865 31"X25" Roanoke County 1800 19"X30" Wythe County 1745-1858 31"X25" I have several of these maps and use them frequently. I had some of mine shrink-wrapped and use little stickers to mark family land. It becomes quite interesting when you notice patterns of family living. Happy Hunting! Leigh Blount

    1. Wm Saunders and Wm D. Saunders
    2. H. Mark Saunders
    3. Does anyone have any "documented" evidence that the Wm. Saunders that died in Pittsylvania Co. around 1815 and owned land off the "Stinking River" in Pittsylvania Co. is the same as Wm. D (Davis or David) Saunders that was supposed to be buried at the "Big House" in Monetta, in Bedford Co. I have seen the two assumed together on some Internet pages with the evidence shown as the Saunders files #1 and #2 in the Bedford Museum. I have checked them and find no evidence for it. The Wm. Saunders that died in Pittsylvania Co. had his estate fought over by two sets of children and Ann Saunders (assumed to be Ann Dove) but the two sets of children DID NOT include Daniel Green , Robert, John, Peggy, Betsy or Lucy Saunders. Also, there are reports on the Internet showing a Wm Saunders having parents named Thomas and Mary Pulliam instead of Henry and Anna Elizabeth Unknown. My Line came from Wm's son Jesse Saunders and I would like to validate whatever the truth is about William. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Mark Saunders Richmond, Va

    3. Hello Bedford county researchers! Since I mentioned the Bedford county maps in the post I did on Davis Mills, I've been getting inquiries on how to obtain them, so I thought it might be helpful to you all to just post the information to the group. I don't think this is advertisement, as this is a research tool... The Roanoke Valley Historical Society actually had a number of Pioneer Settlement Maps done, including Bedford county. I have both Bedford and Franklin counties, as most of my families ended up in Franklin. I think Pittsylvania and several other counties have done these maps now. They are large, as in poster size, and can be shipped in tubes. I don't recall the cost, but it is not a great deal. The second map of Bedford county is a copy of an old map that was done by the Confederate Engineering Corps during the War Between the States. It is interesting and shows a number of landmarks, roads and homesteads of that period. It is also about two feet by two feet or so... I bought my maps while in Bedford, but I suggest that you just write or call them at Bedford City and County Museum 201 East Main Street Bedford, Virginia 24523 Telephone: (540) 586-4520 They are open 10-5, Monday through Sunday except on holidays. I think you'll enjoy these. Regards, Linda Dyal Johns Researching VIRGINIA surnames BLANKENSHIP, CARTER, DILLON, DUDLEY, ENGLISH, FERRELL, HAILE, HARMAN, HAYNES, HUTTS, JONES, SINK, and PAGAN.

    3. Mark, One question, when did the William SAUNDERS of Pitt. Co. died. William David SAUNDERS came to Bedford Co., about 1730. He built the Big House, now in the Smith Mountain Lake Park. He was buried on the south lawn of the Big House, with the grave now returned to naure. He married first to a Polly ? and second to Ann Dove 1787. His father was Henri Zanders(Heinrich)Henry SAUNDERS) Nov. 16, 1703-Oct. 17, 1772; from the Netherlands Holland to Lancaster Co. PA. , married Anna Elizabeth ? Aug. 1701-May 23, 1750. All this came from the Anniversary of the White House Corner. Try checking out this web site: http://www.wco.com/~drema, or e-mail her drema@wco.com. She has loads on the SAUNDERS in Bedford Co.
