    1. Joseph THOMAS born Bedford Co VA 1765
    2. I have Joseph showing on Lee CO VA census, 1850, and it appears that he may have children close to him. Dop you recordnize any part of this group or do you think there is any clue to other THOMAS groups? Joseph THOMAS, [1765], blind in 1850, born Bedford Co VA. Living with him were Mary [1808] and Pleasant [1840]. They were married by Alexander E. Woodward, listed as Minister. George's parents are listed as Joseph and Elizabeth Thomas. Rebecca's father is listed as David Hoback. [not verifed David Hoback married [Mary] Anne Moore of Montgomery Co VA.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: b.hyden@juno.com, To: Lctdugan@aol.com, Lonnie, I can't say for sure, but my guess is that Alexander E. Woodward was a minister. His father was Valentine Woodward, seventh child of Jesse and Mary Hyden Woodward(b. Jan. 25, 1800 Stafford Co, VA.-d. Jan. 29, 1885 Lee Co. Va.), Valentine was a Methodist minister and resided in Sugar Run about five miles from Jonesville, Va. I have also seen his name mentioned as a part of the Methodist Camp Ground in Jonesville. The Woodwards intermarried with my Hydens and several from both sides became Methodist ministers. All I have on Alexander E. Woodward is that he was born Apr. 23, 1831 and married Maggie E. Burckon (Bierkon). 3. I agree with Linda, when y'all ask a 'blanket question' could you please provide a 'blanket answer'? What big town (visible on the map) is it near and does anyone know where Harper's Ferry is? I can find it in the old High School History Book in the text but not on a map of any kind. Only know that it was originally in VA but as they subdivided and created W. VA from VA... I 'think' it is now considered in W. VA. Where? I'm geographically challenged, i.e., I was raised on the West Coast of this here U.S. and know absolutely 'zilch' about the area of my progenitor's original habitation in the Colonies. But I want to over come this handicap and with only the questions listed I find myself with only ONE oar in the water. Try not to get too sooty down thar in Florida... 3. Hello again, Upon further searching, there were actually two Quaker meeting houses along Goose Creek...the one described in the previous message is the Lower Meeting House and there was an "Upper Goose Creek Meeting House" near Taylor's Mountain, much farther upstream, near where the Beale Treasure is supposed to be. I notice on the Bedford County Historical Map there is also a notation above Enoch's Creek, one of the branches of Goose Creek, near Raven Rock, that "The Quaker, David Crenshaw, came here in 1782" with an arrow pointing to a location on Goose Creek. Does anyone have any information on Crenshaw? Did he establish a meeting house there, as well? Goose Creek must have been the Hollywood Boulevard of Quaker Meeting Houses in that part of the world...just kidding. Linda

From A GUIDEBOOK TO VIRGINIA'S HISTORICAL MARKERS: "Quaker Baptist Church" A Quaker meeting was established on Goose Creek in 1757, and a meeting house built. Fear of Indians caused most of the Quakers to move elsewhere though some of them returned. Unsuccessful attempts were made to reestablish the Goose Creek meeting. Before 1824, a church was established near here, known as Difficult Creek Baptist Church. The present Church (Quaker Baptist), built in 1898, stands near the site of the old building. Bedford county: Route 24, 3.0 miles east of interesection of Routes 122 and 24. End of quote. There is, also, located nearby Morgan's Baptist Church, oldest Baptist Church in the county, founded 1771, which was formerly known as Goose Creek Baptist. Morgan's is closer to Moneta and on the other side of Goose Creek from the Quakers. The Quakers were downstream, below Davis Mills, between Body Camp Creek and Difficult Creek, nearer to Huddleston. I'm posting this to the group, even though Ed asked the question, as this may be of some interest to others, as well. I know that I have, speaking for myself, learned a great deal on Bedford county just reading the posts that come through whether or not they apply to me, and this may be helpful to others. 2. Sorry, I meant to say that Harper's Ferry is in West Virginia -- however it's at the "point" where West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland all meet at Loudoun County, VA. Loudoun is bordered by both West Virginia and Maryland -- as well as near Blue Ridge Mntns. and Shenandoah Valley. It is in the northeast corner of Virginia about 35 miles east-northeast of Washington, D.C., on the Potomac River. Francine

    1. Re: Goose Creek -- Quaker Meeting House -- Harper's Ferry
    2. Harper's Ferry is in Maryland, just across the Potomac from Loudoun County, where Waterford, VA, and Loudoun County's Goose Creek are. Migrants from Pennsylania and the port of Philadelphia (Germans, Scotch-Irish and others) crossed the Potomac River at Harper's Ferry and also a little further downstream at what is now the US Route 15 bridge connecting Maryland and Virginia. The Great Wagon Road that traversed from Pennsylvania down through the Shenandoah Valley, on the western side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and on to Tennessee, Texas and Georgia, etc., went through Loudoun County. Those who did not take the Great Wagon Road on through the Shenandoah, took the route that is now US 15 through Loudoun County and down through Virginia on the Eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If Harper's Ferry is mentioned in your information about your ancestors, then Loudoun County's Goose Creek and Waterford are where your Quaker Meeting House must be located. See my previous message about Waterford's Quaker Meeting House. Francine

It was not indexed very well and there was lots of mistakes. In 1998, the Franklin County Genealogical Society and the Franklin County Historical Society merged. We are now the Franklin County Heritage Society and have published a new cemetery book. We printed over 200 copies, which sold out immediately. We have now reprinted the new version and have more copies available. The new cemetery book is indexed by name and cemetery. We have tried to correct the mistakes from the old book and have added several cemeteries that were left out. Our main focus was on the small family cemeteries. This is because they are in the most danger of being lost. Time, weather and land developers are taking their toll on these cemeteries. Our effort has been not only to archive these graves, but to save them as well. Thank you for writing, Donna Wingfield Franklin County Heritage Society --part0_899038686_boundary--

    3. Folks, I did not expect the interest in Ivy Hill I stirred up. Since some of you seem to be familiar with the area, let me ask one more obscure question. Is anyone out there familiar with the lands of Henry Brown and John Fisher? It is supposed to be near Leftwich Pond at Ivy Hill. The land my direct ancestor, Justinian Wills and His wife Elizabeth were granted land use of land by James Calloway for the remainder of their lives in 1795. A recent book "The Browns of Bedford County" mentions an Elizabeth Wills living on land between Mr. Brown and Mr. Fisher c1850. I think this is my ancestors wife. If so, It may give me a clue as to where he might be buried. I'm assuming somewhere close by. Probably in a private plot someplace. Thanks in advance. It enters Bedford county from Campbell near the present town of Huddleston and meanders along in a northerly direction, ending up near Powell's Gap toward Botetourt County. There are a good many historic sites along the way. Linda Johns Florida
