I am researching James HOBBS who married Mary DOLLARD on April 22, 1799 in Bedford VA. James owned land at Peaks of Otter until 1805? Some of his children were born in Bedford County. At some point he moved, either directly or indirectly to Giles County VA where, I believe, he remained until his death. I would like to know if the following Bedford County records are available on-line or through lookups: 1800 census 1810 census 1820 census Land transfer records Occupational records Birth records: 1800 through 1820 I would appreciate any help, even the slightest clue. James is my most (for now) elusive ancestor. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Bill Hobbs

Looking for anyone with information on the following Bedford County Virginia Families: Franklin Creasy and wife Sidney Newman Nimrod Newman and wife Sarah Arthur John Arthur (Sarah's father) Thanks Gerald Creasy
Hi, I think John has an interesting question.........I, for one, have no written proof other than family lore and the wills that are published. I descend from the Henry Whiteley--Ellen Hobbs family in Ohio County, KY. The Whiteleys intermarried with the Haynes family in Bedford Co. in the 1700s. Henry Haynes and Barsheba Hampton had a daughter, Bathsheba, who m. John Whiteley of Bedford. Since it seems some of the most common names back then were John and Henry, that proves not much, but Bathsheba is not that common and would tend to run in families. Sally
This is a plea for help and accuracy. There are many folks who believe their family dates back to a John HAYNES, born in 1670 in Bedford County, VA. I see this in LDS files, WFT files, family trees, and web sites. I would love to believe this, since I descend from William HAYNES 1710-1780, who died in Bedford County. William is often cited as the son of this John HAYNES, along with Henry HAYNES, b. 1701, and Jasper HAYNES b.1715. Here's the problem: In 1670, most Virginians lived within 25 miles of the coast. Bedford County wasn't formed until 1754, 84 years after 1670. It is 150+ miles from the coast. What became Bedford County was probably Indian territory until at least 1730 or so. [I must confess that I owe a debt of gratitude to Earl "Ozzie" Osborne, who gently pointed this out to me some years ago. Thanks Ozzie!] If anyone out there has any direct evidence of this John HAYNES, I'd love to hear it. A will, land transaction, deed, bond, tithe list, whatever. If not, let's act to question this before it is repeated so often that it becomes engrained. August 29, 1998 Fellow Bedford County, Virginia Researchers: My direct relative is LEONARD HALL, born in 1730, in Bedford County, Virginia; later married in Prince George County, Maryland, to JOANNA LETTON, who was born in 1732. I don't know LEONARD's or JOANNA's parents, siblings, cousins or other relatives. I am presently corresponding with several researchers who are also researching the HALL and LETTON family lines and I would like to find others. My goal is to get past LEONARD and JOANNA and the learn about the first HALL and LETTON ancestors who immigrated to the colonies. I will be pleased to share any information I have. Michael O. Dear Group: I am searching for more information concerning Quaker families from Bedford (and/or Campbell) County associated with the South River Monthly Meeting and/or the Goose Creek (or New Bedford) Monthly Meeting. I have recently discovered that my 4th great grandfather, Nathan H. Chapman (1761-1829) may have been a Quaker. Four of the seven children are listed under the marriage sections of Bedford and Campbell Counties in Hinshaw's Vol. 6. Not only are most of his children listed but also his nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors are also listed (surnames in this group include: Bowles/Coleman/Board/Dent/Mitchell/Jordan/Wright/Mays(Mayse)/James/ Cooksey/Dowdy/Taylor/Evans/Nimmo(Nemo)/Lancaster/Wills/Basham). Does anyone know where the original records of the above Quaker meetings are kept? Does anyone recognize any of the names listed above? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am willing to share any information I have. Thanks! Angela Chapman Brigman ABrig2728@aol.com
Here is a vague clue (connection?) James Hobbs married Mary Dollard in Bedford on April 22, 1799. James' parents are unknown. Mary Dollard's parents were Reuben Dollard and ________Wood. If you ever make a less vague, but not necessarily ironclad connection, please let me know. Bill Hobbs
Dear fellow roots searchers, I am researching the Wood family of Bedford, Va. I am stuck on John and Nelly or Milly parents of Richard "Dickey" Wood(married Rachel Cockram) of Franklin and Patrick counties, Va. Who were John's parents and where did they come from? Who was Nelly? Rachel was the daughter of Edward Cockram, Sr. I am not certain where Edward Cockram came from either. Some researchers give Stephen Wood and Ann Johnson as parents of John Wood. They did have a John Wood but he moved to TN and left a will. I do not believe he is my John. Can anyone help. I am looking at references on Henry Wood because according to other's research, John's first son was Henry and Richard's first son was Henry. Could this have been John's father's name and Richard's grandfather? Any Henry Wood(s) in Bedford in early to mid 1700's? Judy
