    1. Genealogy Soc. Volunteers
    2. With the rapid growth of interest in genealogy due to the convenience of computers, the demands on Genealogy Societies to provide us with accessible records has sky-rocketed. Since winter is coming, and many of us will choose to spend more time indoors, I thought I might make the suggestion to check with your local Genealogy Society about doing some volunteer work. Most of you who are subscribers to mailing lists, have personal computers at home. Genealogy Societies are in desperate need for volunteers to help type records into books, databases, etc. The more people who volunteer for these tasks, the more information we will have available to us in book or disc form. Being a researcher, you are more attune to what kind of information a researcher is interested in. For example, Cass Co MO is compiling all their cemetery records into one book and one database. These records will not only contain information obtained from tombstones, but also the information contained in the obituaries, if they are available. Anyway, I think it is important as researchers to not only contribute to our own family trees, but to aid others searching in our own counties. If active researchers become involved with their local Genealogy Societies, then the kind of information we need will become available for us. Even though typing may seem like an undesirable task, it's a great feeling to be a part of something that will make the journey for other's easier. You don't need to type 60 wpm to be of help. "Peckers" are welcome and can take on smaller tasks freeing up the time for the "flash fingers" to do the big jobs. Most Genealogy Societies will allow you to take files home to work on them in your free time. If you can't find that book you desperately need, it's probably because there aren't enough volunteers to make it available. We all want the books and disc's to research from but often times we forget that someone has to take the time to create them. You don't have to be retired to get involved. Every little bit helps. Just a little food for thought. Brenda Marble Listowner

    1. RE: John F. HAWKINS 1844-1935
    2. Joyce Hambleton Whitten
    3. I have in my possession a Civil War era photo of John Fourquean Hawkins Jr. (16 Sep 1844-25 Dec 1935) and his wife Mattie E. (5 Jul 1848-24 Nov 1897). The photo was given to me many years ago by one of his descendants who was childless. His great grandfather had property adjoining the Elisha Whitten (my husband's line) land in Bedford Co. VA. At some point in time I must have come across a cemetery record as I have written the dates of birth and death on the back of the photo along with Shiloh Cemetery (which I am now assuming is in Bedford Co.). If anyone can prove relationship to this couple I will be happy to give this photo to you. I have scanned the photos and will send on request. Joyce Hambleton Whitten Email: jwhitten@bscn.com

    3. This is not one of my lines but have the following: A group of residents of Washington Co MD went to ILL in about 1850. Whether Ogle was the organizer of this group, a land speculator, or member of the group, I do not know. They settled in what is now Ogle Co IL. Some of this group returned to Washington Co - some left a married ch or 2 in IL. Whether Ogle was originally from Washington Co MD or came to move a groujp of settlers from there or not, again, I do not know. Mary

    3. FRANK, MCGRAW, FISHER, POWELL, RAMSEY -- Help, I've hit a brick wall with this Bedford County family: John FRANK (died 1837) and wife Catharine POWELL. Children: Milly FRANK married John FISHER 1822. Washington FRANK (1806-1859), married Sarah POWELL 1840. Elizabeth FRANK born 1811. Nancy FRANK (1812-1851), married Simon RAMSEY 1834. Also Suckey FRANK married Hugh McGRAW 1809. with John FRANK as surety. >From the dates, Suckey may be a child from an earlier marriage or his sister. Nancy and Simon were the first ancestors I found 28 yrs ago, but I've not gotten much farther with them since then. I want John's parents and where he came from before Bedford Co. More information on any of these names would be welcome! I have more info to share. Lynne Hundley

    3. Judy, I am descended from Reuben DOLLARD and Sarah WOOD. I have little on the WOOD family except for two WOOD names in Reuben's will, which I am forwarding to you in a separate post. The dates would indicate that these WOODs would be the next generation down from yours. Please keep me posted on your search and I shall do likewise. Best wishes, Bill Hobbs

    1. Elijah Robertson - son of Thomas?
    2. S & L Bush
    3. Hi. I am new to the list. I am seeking info on my ancestor, Elijah Robertson of Bedford Co. He was b. ca 1794 and m. Mahalah Burnett on April 6, 1815 in Bedford Co. Elijah is listed as the surety for three other Robertson marriages I found in Bedford: 2/20/1815 - John Robertson & Permelia Smelser, dt. Abraham, Elijah Robertson, surety. 6/22/1816 - Obediah Burnett & Nancy Robertson, dt. Thomas, John Robertson, surety. (Elijah not listed as surety, but Obediah was Elijah's surety for his marriage to Mahalah Burnett) and 1/27/1819 - Paul Smelser & Matilda Robertson, dt. Thomas, Elijah Robertson, surety. So, with all these connections to Thomas Robertson, does anyone know if Thomas was the father of my Elijah, and if not, who his father actually was? Help! Thanks one and all for taking the time to read this query. Leslie Bush grabush@intermediatn.net

    1. Bedford Sentinel
    2. Hello fellow researchers, Thank you to everyone who helped me with my divorce question ! I went to the library last week to see which Bedford newspapers are available on microfilm there. Earliest was Bedford Sentinel and the microfilm began with 1857. Very small print but managed to collect a few obits and marriage announcements from that year. If you would like the full notice, just let me know and I'll type it out for you. Obits: Mr. James W. OVERSTREET Mrs. Mary Ann GREINER (Salem) Mr. Wm. LANGHORN (Botetourt) Lucy Catherine BURNETT Mrs. Mary Ann DEWITT Marriages: MOORE - BURKHOLDER MITCHELL - WOOD Also, of interest are the land and home sale announcements because they describe the property in detail and more understandable (to me at least) than the deed books: Richard DENNIS, Rose Cottage Garland H. FREEMAN William LOWRY James M. WILLIAMS, "Oakmulga" Samuel W. HENSLEY (moving west) Benj. P. REYNOLDS Pleasant D. COFER Benj.
