Hello.I am looking for information on Peter CROWDER, my ggg-grandfather. He was born about 1810-12 in Bedford City according to the 1850 Fayette County, Virginia (Now West Virginia) Census. He married Margaret Grass on 31 DEC 1831 in Fayette County, Virginia, and died sometime before 1880 as evidenced by his absence in the 1880 census. Any information or correspondance would be appreciated. I would like to learn more about Peter's life in Bedford as well as his parentage. Thanks. Sabrina Sabrina Lawson sklawson@mindspring.com http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Bayou/3224
Hi Sabrina, I'm a Candler researcher. I received the following information from Crowder researchers which should encourage you. Contact me if you wish to connect with them. In Bedford Co. in 1802, William Crowder, b.c1770's married Mahaly Candler, b. c1770's (daughter of Zedekiah Candler and Anna Moorman). In 1830, their son Joseph was married in Bedford Co. Your Peter was certainly of the generation of Joseph and may have been a cousin or even brother to Joseph Crowder. Zedekiah and Anna Candler's son Zacheriah moved down to Buncombe Co, NC where he reportedly lived among some Crowders. This is not my primary line but I did have this on file and thought it might help. I would be very interested to know what you find out. I am researching the John Murphy Sr. family of Bedford Co VA. In the Bedford Co Deed Book 24, pg 412-413, Nov 1834 my ggg-grandmother, Katherine Murphy, her son Pleasant and his wife Ann R. sold to John Nance some of the family land. At the bottom of the deed it states: In selling and conveying the land mentioned in the foregoing deed we except and reserve now and forever that part and portion of the premises denominated the grave yard attached and contiguous to the old mansion house including as much and no more ground than a square plat sufficiently large to embrace and include all and every grave hereto previously made and located in the grave yard. Does anyone have any knowledge concerning this family grave yard and if it still exists? My husband and I plan to take a trip to Bedford County sometime around May this year and I am trying to get as much information as possible before we get there. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mildred Aiello, Benbrook, TX

Researching my roots. I found references in the Lynchburg City Directories for my gfather James Oliver Agnor, gmother Sara A. McSorley Agnor, guncle John F. McSorley and ggmother Elizabeth McSorley for the period 1890 - 1900. I have only the above dates and locations that they lived in Lynchburg. I have nothing before or after those dates for anyone. Nothing at all on ggfather McSorley. Appreciate any information or direction to gather information on the Agnors/McSorleys. Thank you, Bill Agnor

He pastored the following churches at various times: Little Otter (now Bedford Baptist), Timber Ridge, Hunting Creek, Goose Creek (now Morgans), Wolf Hill, Suck Spring, Glade Creek, Tinker Creek, Jennings Creek, Cove, and New Prospect. I have more information if anyone is interested. I am attempting to trace all descendants of Rev. Harris, and would be happy to share information on his family, although I believe he has few, if any, descendants remaining in Bedford County. Cheryl Chasin CherylC470@aol.com

Though not in the militia, per se, but rather Virginia State troops, several Bedford county men joined the troops of General George Rogers Clark and participated in the campaigns in the western frontiers against the British and Indians at Kaskaskia and Vincennes. Muster rolls and payrolls show that they also spent time in Kentucky while serving out their enlistment, specifically in the area of Lincoln. I have pension papers for three of them, David Pagan, Henry Blankenship, and George Key, all of whom served in the cavalry under Captain John Rogers who was a nephew of General Clark. All three men later returned to Bedford county. On another subject, is has anyone ever heard of the SPEECE family? I'm told they were from Campbell county, possibly, and had an ancestral home named "Ivanhoe"? Many thanks, Linda Johns in Florida
About 50 men of Bedford Co. enlisted in July 1777 with Capt. Charles Gwatkins to go to the relief of Boonesborough, or Ft. Boone. These men were to serve as "defenders of the residents" and some, including Ansel Goodman, were also "Indian Spies", or scouts. On their arrival at Boonesborough, they were placed under the command of Col. Daniel Boone. I do not have the full list of those who enlisted at this time, but have seen the group listed as "The Kentucky Expedition". Ref: Rev War pension application of Alsel Goodman of Bedford Co., photocopies in my possession. This Co. and Capt. Gwatkins are also referenced in several Boone biographies. I have not yet done a full cross reference of early Boonsborough residents or the thirty-two captured at The Blue Licks with Boone (both at my web site, see below) with the list of Bedford Rev. War soldiers in various sources, including the "Our Kin" book. It might be interesting. For the full story, start at: http://www.jacksonville.net/~rgman/ansel.htm
I don't have a list of soldiers from Bedford Co., but my ancestor Jeremiah Robinson was in the Militia and according to his pension, answered a call for a draft made to the Militia in the county. They mustered at the courthouse in the company commanded by Capt. James Dickson and marched from the courthouse to the Rye Cove Fort where they were stationed for three months and then to Long Island on the Holston River to garrison the fort and guard Indians. While there, a treaty was concluded between Col. Christy and Col Shelby and the Cherokee Indians. This group served a total of six months. In the summer of 1778, they supplied another call for a draft and again mustered from the courthouse in the Company commanded by Robert Adams. They were used to guard Chiswell's Lead mines against Indians and Tories I have been trying to find out which treaty was made at Rye Cove and study the history of the places mentioned to get a feel for why these places were important in the fighting of the Rev. War. They don't sound "as important" as being at Valley Forge, but must have had enough significance to be important to the war effort. If anyone can shed any light on these places and the people who served from Bedford County, I would appreciate it. Thanks ... Frances Webb fwebb@cei.net
