To those interested, here is an obscure (not many folks know of this) passage from Mrs. Douglass Summers Brown's book Lynchburg's Pioneer Quakers and Their Meeting House. SOUTH RIVER-GOOSE CREEK The Counties within the bounds of these two Monthly Meetings, during the whole period of their existence (1757-1847) were: parts of Albemarle and Lunenburg, Bedford, Campbell, Amherst, Halifax, Pitt-Sylvania, Henry, and Patrick. The Particular Meetings (local congregations) within the bounds of the Monthly Meetings were: South River (Bedford-Campbell Counties); Old Goose Creek (Bedford Co.); Upper Goose Creek (Bedford Co.); Bedford or Lower Goose Creek (Bedford Co.); Hips Creek (Campbell Co.); Molley's Creek (Campbell Co.); Halifax - or Creek (Bedford Co.); Kirby's - or Dan River (Halifax Co.). Banister (Halifax Co.); Ivy Creek (Bedford Co.); Kirby's - or Dan River (Halifax Co.). Hi all, I wrote a reply yesterday but my computer crashed and it made me so mad I just quit for the day -- all is lost. I descend from four generations of Quakers, the Candler family of bed/cam Co, VA. I have made a little website on them. It is new so make sure you hit the "refresh" or Reload" button each time you visit or you'll get the old cookies. here is the url: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/9778/ >From Hinshaw, Am. Quaker Genealogy, vol.6 The first members of the monthly meeting were old stock Quakers for the large part, of English extraction from the tidewater section of Virginia, especially Cedar Creek and Henrico Monthly Meetings. Among the first names appearing in the books are: Hendrake, Johnson, Kirby, Neal, Candler, Lynch, Terrell, Clark, Moorman, Echols, Payne, Collins, Farmer, Roberts, Womack, Caldwell and Ayrs. Later in the eighteenth century and prior to the American Revolution the monthly meeting was refreshed and strengthened by the southward movement of Quakers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, headed for the Carolinas and Georgia. Many of these migrating Friends became stranded in Campbell and Bedford Counties and their presence made this one of the strongholds of the Society in this State. Much of this new blood was of German and Welsh stock and had drifted south via Hopewell, Fairfax and Goose Creek Monthly Meetings in northern Virginia. So numerous did Quakers become in this section between 1775 and 1800 that many new meeting houses were built and the Society was for a time, the dominant influence in community affairs. Goose Creek Monthly Meeting, in Bedford County (sometimes called new Goose Creek, distinguish it from that one of the same name in Loudon County) was set off from South River in 1794; but was laid down in 1812 and the membership returned to South River Meeting. It included all of the present Bedford County. The monthly meetings of South River and Goose Creek petitioned for the right to a quarterly meeting which was granted and set up under the name of Western Quarterly Meeting. This quarterly meeting was discontinued in 1817. I have some more on "Upper" and "Lower" Goose Creek in Bedford, Co. Will post later. Dear Mary, This is in response to your query regarding Goose Creek Monthly Meeting. There is a publication titled Quaker Records of South River Monthly Meeting, Virginia 1756-1800, by F. Edward Wright, published by Family Line Publications, Rear 63 East Main Street, Westminster, Maryland 21157, 1993, which states as follows: "South River began in 1754 as a Weekly Meeting of Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting. In October 1757 South River Monthly Meeting was formed, consisting of the Preparative meetings of South River and Goose Creek (not to be confused with Goose Creek Meeting of Loudoun Meeting). South River Meeting was held near the present city of Lynchburg. Goose Creek Meeting was held along the southern part of Goose Creek. Goose Creek Monthly Meeing was established in 1794, consisting of the meetings of Banister, Seneca and Hills Creek. South River and Goose Creek Monthly Meetigs covered the counties of Bedford and Campbell." I checked the index and no Patterson or Eidson was listed. Hinshaw includes a short history of Goose Creek Monthly Meeting and says that Goose Creek Monthly Meeting was about 10 miles southeast of Bedford City on Difficult Creek, a branch of Goose Creek, on the land of Elijah Turner and John Lewis. Hinshaw also did not list a Patterson or Eidson in the Goose Creek records. Best wishes, Robert N. Grant 15 Campo Bello Court Menlo Park, CA 94025 RNGrant@prodigy.com
Hi Mary, I've done a good bit of looking into Quakers because I have four generations of Bedford/Campbell County Quakers in my family tree. I have a good article on the much location of theGoose Creek Quaker Meeting(s) (there were at least three different Goose Creek Meetings - two in Bedford County). Contact me if you wish to communicate on this. Ed Beezie48@aol.com wrote: > Was there a Quaker Meeting House at Goose Creek in Bedford? Was there a Quaker Meeting House at Goose Creek in Bedford? If so, does anyone have information or know where it might be obtained? My great, great grandmother, Jane Eidson Patterson, who married Charles C. Patterson was buried at Goose Creek. I have reason to believe she was a Quaker. Jane was born in 1778 and died ca 1872. The marriage of Jane's daughter, Elizabeth Jane 1827-ca1900 to Silas Fuqua Bondurant 1825-ca-1900 was included in the Quaker Encyclopedia by Hinshaw. Any information on my ancestors or the Quaker Meeting House will be greatly appreciated. I am trying so hard to find the parents of Silas Fuqua Bondurant and thought this might give me a clue. Hi Y'all, I was asked by one of the ladies in the D.A.R. to send this to all the Burnett kin on my list. It's an update/change in the ceremony for WILLIAMSON BURNETT. Plus I don't think everyone knows about this. I have added more email addresses (70+ total) since I last put out this word. On 17 April 1999 the D.A.R. are going to do an awards ceremony at the Staunton River Church in Bedford County, Virginia for WILLIAMSON BURNETT who married Pricilla Carter. They are awarding his grave their beautiful plaque for his participation in the Revolutionary War. Looks like it will really be a big ceremony. Newspaper will be there, Honor Guard, etc. Plus the best part, a LOT of us Burnett/e kin from all over. One cuzin is trying everything possible to get here from Montana. Hope to get more from other states too. A lot of Bedford kin from Bedford County and other towns/cities around Virginia will be there. Sounds like a perfect day to me for y'all to visit. What do ya think? A good chance and reason to visit the city of your ancestors. Bedford is a beautiful place and still considered "small town America. Plus meet your cuzins. This is a once in a lifetime chance for a lot of us to get together. If there is ANY CHANCE that you might be here for this please let me know so we will have an idea who all is coming. Need any help with accommodations, directions, etc. don't hesitate to ask. REMEMBER 17 APRIL 1999. Take care, Cuzin Waddie http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/3348/

John Yates SNEAD (1818-1892) married Lemira Jane LAMBERT (ca. 1822-?) on 18 Nov 1839 in Bedford County, VA. They moved to north-east Texas before the Civil War, and are buried in Paris, Lamar County, Texas. John Yates was the son of Moses Snead and Martha Marshall Yates; I don't have Lemira's parents tracked down yet. Is anyone else researching the SNEAD or LAMBERT line in Bedford County? I received this from one of our fellow researchers, and thought it worthwhile to pass on. `Who says computers do not help. I recently sent out a querry looking `for my mothers birth father. In the last week and a half I have been `able to locate her birth family. We have confirmed the info and we `have also taken my mother to Virginia to meet them. She now has 2 `half-brothers living and 2 step- sisters living. Talking about one `happy lady. Especially since the only brother she had died at an `early age. We were able to send photos across the internet to confirm `this before we made that trip also. I want to stress to everyone `important that it is to answer these querry's because you may not know `who you are helping. Thanks to everyone who sent info to me. I will `be asking for more after this because it does work. Regards, Freddie S. fspradlin@delphi.com 3448 W. 170th St., Torrance, CA 90504-2402
Ann Mariah YATES also goes by the name of WALROND. Her mother married William Yates first and Moses Walrond second. I wrote the Bedford County Clerk for an adoption record. She replied that such records were confidential and required a court order to open. This happened about 1810 or so. Does anyone have a method for getting such a record without a court order?
Hello all, This is my first post to the list. Does anyone know where I could find birth records for the year 1797 Bedford Co.? I am particularly interested in the family of John Kern and Anna Patterson. They were married Oct. 1793/4. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Becky
Dear Troy, Saw your query about Anthony Wright of Bedford County and thought I would write. For convenience I am copying the Wright, Bedford, and Franklin lists in case there is someone else interested in your query. 1850 (year of death) Anthony Wright of Bedford County, Virginia (place of death) was a son of 1803 John Wright of Bedford County and Elizabeth (Pate) Wright and grandson of 1763 Thomas Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, and Mary (_____) Wright. 1850 Anthony married first Elizabeth Mayse on December 29, 1789, at Bedford County, Virginia, married second Catherine (Wright) St. Clair on September 24, 1846, at Bedford County, Virginia, and died in August 1850 at Bedford County, Virginia. The children of 1850 Anthony and Elizabeth (Mayse) Wright were the following: 1) Joseph Wright, 2) Rhoda (Wright) Wright, 3) 1831 Solomon Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, 4) Celia (Wright) Wright, 5) Elizabeth (Wright) (Wright) Ramsey, 6) Agness (Wright) Wheeler, 7) Malinda (Wright) Mays, 8) Mary (Wright) (Gish) Brugh, and 9) possibly Anthony Wright, Jr., or Anthony Penell Wright. The last named child is the only other Anthony Wright in Bedford or Franklin Counties in the 1700's or early 1800's that I have found, other than: 1) Thomas Anthony Wright, the son of 1831 Solomon Wright of Bedford County referred to above, and 2) Your Thomas Anthony Wright, the son of 1849 Thomas Wright of Franklin County, grandson of 1815 Joseph Wright of Bedford County, and great grandson of 1763 Thomas Wright of Bedford County. If you would like information on 1850 Anthony, just let me know and I can send that along. I would much appreciate seeing any additional information you have collected on Thomas Anthony Wright and his descendants in Arkansas. On the CUNDIFF side I do not have this CUNDIFF/SQUIRES marriage in my files. I would be interested in adding it. It would be great to place this Jonathan Cundiff. Here is what I do have on Isaac and Mary Echols. I always double check references to Revolutionary War ancestors. Several times I have found inaccuracies. The urge to prove a link to a Revolutionary War Veteran sometimes over powered common sense and research skills. I have also found that many Revolutionary War connections were made many years ago when access to rescues were harder to come by. Therefore connections were made on the limited information that was available. I would be interested to know more about the information Mrs. Jane W. Alford provided. I'm posting for the first time: With the help of lots of Freeman people this is what I have figure so far: Edmond Freeman came to Saugus, MA in 1635 from Devonshire, England. He had 2 sons John and Edmond who married 2 daughters of Governor Prence. Son John Freeman, a Baptist Preacher, About 1745 he left New England and moved to VA via NJ and PA. He settled in Bedford Co., VA. John had a son named James(#1)born Abt. 1745. James (#1) was also a Baptist Preacher. Wife name was Sarah. This James(#1) and Sarah had 15 children they are: (all mentioned in his Will) Sons Daughters 1. John 1. Jane 2. James (#2) 2. Mary 3. William(my line) 3. Anna 4. Richard 4. Elizabeth 5. Jesse 5. Sarah 6. Thomas 6. Frances 7. Moses 7. Milly 8. Peggy The oldest son John moved from Bedford Co. VA to Rhone Co., TN in 1791. Richard (son #4) remained in Bedford Co., VA for the remainder of his life. Jesse (son #5) died before 1822. James(#2), William, Thomas and Moses, headed southwest out of VA into TN, stopping at John=92s place before continuing on their quest.= Three decided to head for North Missouri the fourth decided on Mississippi. James (#2) did not go to either North Missouri or Mississippi but to Smith Co., TN which later became Macon County. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Info from the Marriage record of Bedford County, VA: 26 Oct 1798 William Freeman and Sally Parker. (I believe William is the son of James (#1) of Bedford Co., VA) ------------------------------------------------------------------ William Freeman was born about 1775 in Bedford, VA William Freeman and Sarah Parker were married in VA and at some point in time (early 1800=92s) settled in South Point, Lawrence County, Ohio. George Parker Freeman b. 21 Apr 1811 5. William D. Freeman b. Abt.1814 6. Moses Alfred Freeman b. Abt.1819 7. Sarah Freeman b. I have Sarah GRAHAM of Bedford Co in the 1780s - mother of 10 - who turns up in Court records as COX then marries a Mr. FURROW. My question: Would a lady with 10 children in 1780 Bedford County VA have taken her maiden name back and also given it to her children? Any thoughts? My Sarah is such a puzzle!! Kay in CA
