The Bedford City/County historical society has a wonderful set of cemetery books that covers the public cemeteries, church cemeteries and all the family graveyards. I found my two family cemeteries listed and the information gave a person (usually the landowner) to call. Both people were wonderfully helpful. One took me out into the middle of the field and helped me hunt until we found the stones. The other mowed the edge of the field so we could get to the top of the ridge and set the stones back up so it would look better when I got there. I wouldn't have been able to find either without help. The historical Society address and phone is on the Bedford Co. GenWeb page. This message is for descendants of James Board everywhere. James Board was born in Baltimore County, MD in 1740, moved to Lunenburg/Bedford Co. Virginia with his family in 1746/7, moved to Franklin County, VA, in the 1790s, and finally moved to Breckinridge County, KY, in 1806. He died in Breckinridge County in 1826. James Board was recently declared a Patriot by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. Anyone who descends from him is now eligible for membership.
Hello Everyone! I read with interest of the DAR's ceremony of a Bedford Revolutionary War patriot. I, too, am a descendant of a Bedford County patriot and hope that someone out there can help me locate his grave. Nathan(iel) Chapman (1761-1829) came to Bedford County from Cumberland County, VA around 1784. He bought 385 acres of land on Beaver Dam Creek from Lemaster Cooksey around 1791. When he died in 1829, Nathan left some of his land for the use of the Jointee Methodist Church and was buried on this land. >From what I understand this church eventually became the Jointee Baptist Church, the Methodists merging with another neighboring congregation. The Church building is no longer standing and many of the original graves were moved to the "new" Methodist church grounds nearby. However, my ancestor is still on this land along with two or three other persons. Does anyone have any idea where to find this long lost gravesite? I was in Bedford County in January and my cousin and I looked everywhere for this site (over some fences and into the brambles!) with no luck. Another cousin tells me that Nathan's grave is on the Bond Farm property...... Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to visit his grave and make sure that future generations can find his burial place. Thanks for all your help! Hi Brad! I spent a little time searching for a Wiley and Henry Stratton of VA in the time period before 1820. What I found is probably not the right folks, but it may interest you and others chasing Bedford County relatives. I found a Wiley and Henry Stratton (and others) in the following book: Hopkins, Walter Lee, "Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia and Their Connections", 1931, 350pages, indexed. re-published by C.J. Carrier Harrisonburg, VA, 1992. The Hopkins book lists 19 Stratton references in the index, from the marriage of Jane "Gincey" Stratton, 3rd wife of Col. Thos. Leftwich in 1783 (on page 19) to the reference to his daughter Polly Stratton in the will of the same Col. Thos. Leftwich (1740-1815) on page 313. Incidentally, Col. Leftwich managed to outlive 2 of his 3 wives and several of his nineteen (19!) children. The Wiley J. Stratton referenced is NOT your Wiley B. Stratton , but I found they do link to my HAYNES family! Wiley J. Stratton's parents were Elizabeth Leftwich (b. 1778) and Thomas Stratton (b. Bedford County); g'parents were Sarah Hampton and Henry Stratton (b. Chesterfield County, d. 1799 Bedford Co.); ggreatgrandparents were Elizabeth Elam and Thomas Stratton (b. 1710 Bermuda Hundreds, VA, d. 1773 Chesterfield County, VA.) Jane "Gincey" Stratton was probably the sister of Thomas Stratton, since her parents were also Sarah and Henry Stratton. Wiley J. Stratton had nine siblings: Susana, John, Thomas, Jeannette (who m. her cousin Jesse Leftwich in 1831--lots of inbreeding!), Martha Malvina, Frazier O., Amelia, and Virginia. Finally, a William Stratton m. Mary (Polly) Haynes, dtr. of Henry Haynes and Bersheba Hampton (my gggreat-grandparents) on November 30, 1793; they had six children. Hi Brad Do you have a copy of the Book of Strattons? I am looking for a connection of Strattons to my Bartons of Bedford Co, VA. My great-grandfather was Stratton Lee Barton, born Apr 11 1863 in Bedford Co, VA. He married Bettie Lee McFall(s). I am trying to find where the Stratton connection to the Bartons comes into play. To all Quaker researchers: What Ed said about Hinshaw's Vol. 6 is true...ALL early marriages from Bedford and Campbell Counties were recorded in this book. My 3rd great grandfather, Henry Harrison Chapman, most of his siblings, as well as many of his cousins were included in this work. This puzzled me until I discovered that my Chapmans were Methodists! My 4th great grandfather, Nathaniel Chapman (1761-1829) even donated some of his land to the Jointee Methodist Church and was buried there. Not something a practicing Quaker would do! A good way to tell if your ancestors were practicing Quakers or not is to check out the Monthly Meeting minutes. A Quaker cousin of mine explained that due to the inclusion of non-Quakers in Hinshaw's Vol. 6, this would be the only way to verify if your forebearers were indeed Quakers. Friends who attended the Monthly Meeting and other meetings (i.e. regional) were recorded in the minutes. If you can't find anyone attending these functions, then your ancestors were probably not Quakers. Hope that this information helps everyone.....good luck! Angela Chapman Brigman ABrig2728@aol.com

Hi, I'm sending this to the "L" because it seems to apply to several of us. I have been informed recently (by very kind genealogists) that the entire Bedford and Campbell Co, VA marriage records (from the 18th & early 19th centuries) were reproduced in Hinshaw's vol. #6. Therefore, if your ancestor shows up in a cyber-search of the records, you need to be careful not to assume that they were Quakers.
