    3. I have a collection of info I bought from a professional genealogist in Bedford this summer, she had done the work for a person who is now deceased. The main character is Brace L. Dearing born 1871or 1874 in Bedford Co, m. Mary "Mollie" Barber and 2nd m. Mary L. Hudson. His father was Alexander D. Dearing, mother Mary Elizabeth Dickerson. Brace died 4 Feb. 1941. Alexander is the son of Jabez and Nancy Steward, Brace's children were Henry Anderson, Charles Herbert, Mary, Florence, Myrtle, Bracy, Mamie, Myrtle, (between the two wives) I have family group sheets with researchers notes on these, if you are interested I could copy them and send them via mail, I would like to see them get into the hands of someone who knows of them and can use the info. There is a book called: "Our Kin" The Genealogies OF SOME OF THE EARLY FAMILIES WHO MADE HISTORY in the Founding and Development of BEDFORD COUNTY VIRGINIA This is a great book on early Bedford County, VA families. The book is out of print, but I have been in contact with the publisher in an attempt to have it reprinted. If anyone is interested in possibly obtaining a copy, please go to my website (http://www.flash.net/~maclover/help.html). I have listed some of the surnames in the book, and discuss the possibility of getting it republished. It is a biggy with 819 pages. I look forward to lots of replys. J. Goforth

    3. Owen OWEN (b. 1785 in VA, prob. Bedford Co.) married Delih (Delilah) OWEN on 18 October 1803 in Bedford County. She was the daughter of John and Marget (Margaret) OWEN. John's parents were Owen OWEN and Mary [GOOD/GOAD?], who moved to Bedford County in the mid to late 1700s. (We think her name was GOOD/GOAD, but we don't have any evidence.) John's grandparents were Robert OWINGS and Rachel HOOK of Prince Georges/Frederick County, Maryland. Who were Marget OWEN's parents? Who were the parents of Owen OWEN (b. 1785) who married Delilah? 2. Bob Foster
    3. Looking for information on the George Coughran/Caughran, soldier of the revoultionary war, who was living in "Bedford City" at the time of his enlistment in the VA line. I know almost nothing about him, except that he turns up in Livingston Co., KY for the (reconstructed) 1800 KY census, resides in Illinois for a while, and then moves on to Old Hot Spring Co., Arkansas Territory by at least 1834. It was in AR that he applied for his revolutionary war pension on May 3, 1838 and then again on Oct. 7, 1853. He was 91 at that time and living alone. Thanks, Bob Foster

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] HACKWORTH Surname
    2. Marian
    3. This is a copy of a letter my family received February 2, 1972 It may be of some value to you. Mr. O.W. Hackworth 611-14 Specls Bldg. Los Angeles, Calif. Dear Sir and Cousin: I was pleased to receive your kind letter of yesterday, for I love all who bear the HACKWORTH name. My uncle, Nicademus Hackworth, of Marene County, Alabama whom I never saw, but with whom I kept uf correspondence as long as he lived, was a family Historian, and took great pains to learn all he could about our ancestors. He was educated in Kentucky as a dentist and found a number of the Hackworths in that state, while there attending the college of dentistry. In tracing our family history, he learned that the first Hackworth family emmigrated to Virginia in 1660 from Wales. He had five sons and four daughters who emmigrated into other states as they married. All the Hackworths in the U.S. are descendants of the five sons of the first Hackworth, who emmigrated into this country from Wales and England. Some of our family emmigrated from Wales into London in 1500 and there the name was changed into Ackworth, because it is the English custom to leave out the "h" sound in many words. You will find in the leading encyclopedia that one J.W. Hackworth in the early history of railway business made an important improvement upon the railway locomotive. Our family are noted in being well represented in all professions, many of them are able phyusicians, lawyers, preachers and leading mechanics. My maternal grandfather was of English ancestry, therefore all of my near kindred are of pure English blood, of which we are all proud. My grandfather Hackworth was for many years one of the leading preachers of the Baptist Church we now call "hardshell Baptists" but later he became a leading Christian minister of that denomination known as "Camellites." There is one general trait of character in the Hackworth blood that nothing can daunt or change. They do their own thinking regardless of the opinions of others. They cannot be driven by force or otherwise to do a thing they think wrong or untrue. They never desert a friend in need. They are generous and kind and are never tyrants to the lowly. I am now in my 85th year of life and my wife is in her 83rd year of life. The 6th of next March will be the 60th anniversary of our marriage. We have three sons and two daughters of whom we are very proud. John W.Hackworth, whom you met, is our youngest son. His mother calls him her baby. I may soon be in your city and if so, I shall take pleasure in calling upon you. If you ever come out into this little city which is a part of the main city of San Diego, call and see us. I will be glad to see or hear from you at any time. With best wishes for you and yours, I am One of your distant cousins, (signed) S.A. Hackworth This letter is from S.A. Hackworth, 884 Prospect St., La Jolla, CA. no date, (in possession of record of Mrs. Nannie Tuck Hackworth) as of the present date (that copy was made) February 2, 1972. Does anyone know who the grandfather was that was referred to? Does anyone know who were the sons of S.A. Hackworth? I would appreciate any and all information... Thanks Marian eepedersen@msn.com

    1. Re: [VABEDFOR-L] Dickinson Precinct Mid 1800's
    2. The Pigg River is located in what is now Franklin, Henry and Pittsylvania Counties; however, I know that at one time Franklin County was Bedford County. The information I have states that General Grant Maxey was a miller and lived in Dickinson Precinct in Bedford County and that he later moved to Roanoke (The Maxey's of Virginia, p. 614) which is where he died. I have an uncle who is 79 years old and he remembers going to the mill and visiting his grandfather, G.G.Maxey, he confirms that it was on the Pigg River but he thinks it was in the Rocky Mount/Gladehill Area. He says that he remembers visiting his grandfather and then going fishing in the River. He thinks that it is still standing and says that there was a plaque on the door of the building that had General Grant Maxey's name on it. His request of me is to "Please find this old Mill so that I can visit it once more time." So that is what I am doing, trying to give an aged man his request. Any information will be helpful. Thank you Pat in Va.

    2. Hello Bedford researchers Can anyone point me in the right direction. I am trying to identify the area of Dickinson Precinct in the mid 1800's in Bedford County. I am looking for an old Mill that was located on the Pigg River. Was the Pigg River or any part of the river within the Dickinson Precinct? Thank you ever so much. Pat Corbitt Johns
