I am looking for information on Jeremiah Jones who was born in this county about 1777. He married Susannah Agee and lived in the Giles/mercer county. He is listed in the Bedford land and census records in the very early years of 1800. I am trying to find out his parents names and where he came from. I think he came from one of the early Bedford CO Jones families. he was related to a James jones and an Obadiah Jones. Any info on this family appreciated. Sherry sowards
Hi,I am descended from Daniel Green SAUNDERS, through his son Wiliam SAUNDERS , who married Florentine KASEY.(by their daughter Louisa Frances SAUNDERS). They had a son by the name of Daniel Thomas . Does anything look familiar? Do you have any dates? I could pinpoint a little better if I had those. Each generation had a Daniel or David. Get back to me if you want. Jeri Gallus

The HAYNES Family Web site has been updated. I've added 700+ more individuals, many in KY. It covers all the known descendants of William HAYNES (1710-1780) of Bedford County, VA which I have found to date, as they spread out from Bedford County to TN, MS, KY, and TX. It is in two different formats and content: The original site--the direct line from William 1780 down to my family--with a narrative of the history of my direct male ancestors and their immediate families; and An indexed site with vital statistics and sources for all 1600+ known relatives from William 1710 to the present day. Over 600 surnames are included. Individuals presumed living are limited to name only. I've added a HAYNES coat-of-arms, a number of links to other interesting sites, and corrected some errors that many of you have been kind enough to point out. I would appreciate your comments on errors of commission, omission, and suggestions for improvement. I welcome any additional data on this branch of the HAYNES line, particularly on the birth and death of John HAYNES of Bedford County (ca 1780 to ca 1830). Freddie has given me his kind permission to announce a new Rootsweb mailing list here. I thought that since so many Leftwiches were from Bedford Co. some of you might be interested. The name of the list is Leftwich-l, subscription directions are the same for all the other Rootsweb lists. The list is very new, just set up yesterday, and so far I'm the only subscriber. But I'm looking forward to discussing the fine Leftwich lineage with other interested people. The concern was that every person have a means of support and not become a burden of the county. Orphans with property had no problem because someone would take the responsibility in return for the profits from the property. I read that a stud bull was often left to an orphan child because that would be attractive to the local community and someone would agree to be guardian. Children with no property had nothing to attract a guardian but still needed to be housed and fed. They were a charge on the poor house until someone took them. They were bound out to a responsible person who agreed to feed, clothe, house, and sometimes teach a trade, in exchange for their labor until they reached 21 yrs. The person who took the child had to sign for a bond and someone had to stand surety -- to assure that the terms of the bond would be carried out. The child was also bound by the legal document and could not leave or change without permission of the court. Several of my more well-to-do ancestors had orphans bound to them for periods of time. Sometimes the bond was changed and the orphan bound to someone else -- with no evidence of why. Perhaps the orphan was unsuitable for the particular trade, perhaps the adult was no longer able to provide room and board or no longer needed as much help -- his own sons growing old enough. Joan: Would the name Mary Dearing Ward happen to be on any of those family group sheets? Bob Laughon
Can anyone tell me what precisely the term "bound out" meant, as in to bind someone over to another in the 1700s? I have a rough idea of what it is, but I am in the dark about many specifics regarding why and how this process was conducted. I have seen one example where a young man who had lost his father was bound over to another to learn a trade, but this seemed to be a remedy for maltreatment by his step-father. Here is the particular example I am currently working with: Campbell Co, VA Order Book 1, p. 243 October 1783 --"Ordered that the Church Wardens of Russell Parish bind out George Cohorn (who was formerly bound to Alexander Dobbins) to Christopher Griffith. . ." And at what age might this arrangement be expected to be terminated? Thanks, Bob Foster
