    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Re: Migration Routes
    2. Norman H. Ricker, Jr.
    3. Time periods for migration are important especially if they can be related to events. Between 1828 and 1831 the Georgia Legislature stripped the Cherokee of all civil rights. People with Indian blood knew this was coming and moved rather than have their lands confiscated and they be forcibly moved west. 1832, Bedford County VA Deed Bk 23, Pg 86 & 87, all members of Richard Moss's family deed their inherited land to Thomas P. Mitchell. It would appear that the entire family migrated elsewhere immediately after 11 Mar 1832. Quakers were leaving the South in droves at that time over slavery. Many went to Ohio and Pennsylvania. At this time, the U.S. Congress had passed a law for the removal of Indians to Oklahoma Territory. From 1800 on many Choctaw and Cherokee claimed to be Free Negroes to avoid prejudices of Whites and escape removal. Where this Moss family went has not been determined, but folks did not move alone in those hostile days; they moved with others or to locations friends had already moved. It was essential to survival. Norm Ricker normhr@ij.net
