Hello researchers, I have found a US Gov. Search Engine. Haven't as yet explored everything but am curently in the process of checking out the genealogy portion of the site. Thought maybe someone could benefit from the information. According to an article in the Roanoke Times, this site is free for a limited time. http://www.usgovsearch.com Do a All Source search for Genealogy. Some of the information is fascinating. Pat in Va.
Does anyone's research of either the Dowdy or Overstreet families of Bedford have any information on the 1880 Census (Liberty District) entry for a H. W. Dowdy and the Overstreet children that are living in that household? I'm looking for a W. H. Dowdy who was married to a Mary Overstreet and I'm thinking the H. W. on the census should possibly be W.H. The age fits my W. H.. I know there were a lot of marriages between the Dowdy and Overstreet families in the early 1800's but I have yet to make my positive connection. Any help appreciated. BTW My W. H. Dowdy and Mary Overstreet end up in Montgomery Co., TN in 1883. Thanks
We have generated enough pre-orders to get the book "Our Kin" The Genealogies OF SOME OF THE EARLY FAMILIES WHO MADE HISTORY in the Founding and Development of BEDFORD COUNTY VIRGINIA reprinted in June. The actual number reprinted will be determined by how many checks the publisher receives. I will be sending out final instructions very shortly. For details about the book you can visit the following website http://www.flash.net/~maclover/help.html I want to thank everyone that responsed. Without them this book might never have been reprinted. J. Goforth My Family Tree (http://www.flash.net/~maclover/)

Seeking info on Alex MORRIS who married Lucy BLANKENSHIP. Lucy b. 1892 d. 1940 in Evington, VA. Also, seeking info on Alex C. MADDOX who married Alice LYNCH. I'm guessing they were of Campbell Co. as their daughter, Andrea (aka Andrew) b. 1897 d. 1926 was my grandmother, and her marriage license was from Campbell Co. I have no further info on Alex Morris nor Alex Maddox/Alice Lynch. Thanks! Tommy, I've seen a Civil War Engineer's map for Buchanan area which shows names of residents. That map or an adjacent one may show the settlers in the valley up Jennings Creek (I think that's the creek that Arcadia is on). I drove down that winding road from the Blue Ridge to Arcadia. It crosses the creek some seven times, if I remember correctly. Anyway, about the maps. I saw them at the Virginia State Library in Richmond. But they aren't allowed to make copies there. You can get copies from the Virginia Historical Society, also in Richmond. Incidentally, the east side of the Blue Ridge at Arcadia is in Botetourt Co. So you might ask about Mumford on the Botetourt list. Hello Elisa, This is in response to your recent request for information relating to your COHARN/COHORN ancestors. Like you, I too am searching for my COUGHRAN (COHARN) ancestors, in particular a George COUGHRAN or COHARN b. c1765 in Bedford or Charlotte Co., VA. I believe, but cannot yet prove, that your Hugh COHARN is related to my ancestor in some way. You may already be aware of this, but the surname COHARN/COHORN is a particular variant of the surname COUGHRAN that was spoken in the Bedford-Campbell-Charlotte County, Virginia area in the mid-1700s. I cannot say exactly why this is so. It may be that the county clerk heard these Scots- Irish immigrants pronounce their names that way or maybe our ancestors just dropped the -G. In any case, I have seen this name spelled COUGHRAN, CAUGHRAN, COHARN, COHORN, COTHRAN, CAWTHORN, CATHERN, CAUTHRON, COCHRAN, etc. This makes researching this family extremely difficult, to say the least. As luck would have it, I presently live in Virginia and have been collecting every tidbit of information on the Virginia COCHRAN/COUGHRANs from that era that I can find. My file has grown quite large. Some patterns are emerging and though I've not found the smoking gun linking my George COUGHRAN with the first immigrants from northern Ireland I think I am getting very close. I'm pretty sure their names wereeither Peter or John COUGHRAN, whom I believe were brothers who came down to VA from Lancaster Co., PA around 1745. I haven't traveled to Bedford and Campbell Counties just yet, but I will in the near future. I have heard there are sources there that are not available in the LVA in Richmond which is where I've done much of my current research on this family. I have written out below what little I know about your line. I haven't found any reference to a Hugh COHORN c1800 in VA yet, but if I do I'll post it to this list. I know my info doesn't answer your question about where Hugh came from, but it may give you some more leads. Your George W. COHARN married Lizzie Haynes. I hope this helps. Yours, Bob 1. I am trying to locate Munford, Va. on a road map of Botetourt County, Va. Munford was a small community of the 1800 that does not exist today. It was located on State Hwy. 614 from 2 to 3 miles down the mountain from the Peaks of Otter toward Arcadia, Va. My relatives lived there, or in that immediate area, and I am trying to locate the Old Markham Cemetery on what was the Home Place of Jesse E. Markham, who died in 1900. This place was bought by his son J. Solomon Markham who died in 1914, and from here I do not know who got the property, but it is near where Munford, VA. use to be. Melvin Markham is in the process of helping me with this problem, since he lived in Monford as a boy, but he is in Goode, Virginia, and not near enough to measure this for me. I would like to know the exact mileage from the Blue ridge Parkway to where Munford use to be. I know there must be someone in Bedford County that is very familiar with this area. Please help me with this problem. Thank You Very much, Tommy Markham
Hi everyone, I finally have my web page up and invite you to please take a look at: http://hometown.aol.com/anniv2776/page2/index.htm My goal is to provide information for those researching the Gross name in Bedford and surrounding counties in Virginia. Many families originating here migrated to surrounding states such as West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and beyond and hopefully connections can be made here. I've included a descendancy chart for Isaac Gross of Bedford County (it's rather large); other Gross names to mix and match that I've found in my research; some tips in researching the Gross name; my own Gross genealogy and a few other Gross researchers are listed right now. I will update it frequently so please check in often. Soon I will include the descendancy chart for James Richard Gross (my great-uncle) whose descendants own the Gross Orchards in Bedford County. This will also be a large file. During research, I have collected Gross birth, marriage, death, census, deed and court records in Bedford County and a few in surrounding counties. I will add these as soon as time allows. Other Bedford County surnames include: Baker, Bays, Cook, Cooper, Cundiff, Dooley, Feazle, Giles, Gray, Greenwood, Hogan, Kelly, Kessler, Lantz, Lawhorne, Loyd, Martin, McCoy, McDaniel, Newman, Oney, Pearcy, Phillips, Richardson, St. Clair, Smelser, Stanley, Waldron, Watson, Wigginton, and Wilkerson Let me know what you think! Thank you, Julie Smith

I believe I am on the correct List. I am looking for GILL/BLANKENSHIP surnames who were in Lynchburg, VA in the late 1800s. My map indicates this could be one on several counties. However, I noticed many GILL/BLANKENSHIP names listed in the Bedford County census. I seek information about the following: Charles H. GILL, m. Lucinda ?; they had one known son, Charlie Henry GILL. Charlie Henry GILL, b. 7 January 1861 in Virginia; m. Emma POWERS 8 May 1883. Emma POWERS, b. 12 January 1860 in Virginia; d. Lynchburg. Her parents were Philip P. POWERS (the immigrant) and Eliza WRIGHT. They had one known daughter, Ella C. GILL. Ella C. GILL, b. 21 January 1884, Lynchburg, VA; m. Thomas Leftwich BLANKENSHIP 14 August 1902. Can anyone do a 1900 census look-up to confirm these individuals were in Bedford County? Thanks for any help, Fred Hagan

Hi Cuzins, I have been busy since the weather has been so perfect here in Virginia. A lot of plans in the works for getting even more Burnett/e information posted to "our" web site as soon as I can find a little bit of time. I will, as always, keep you posted. Today I added "BURNETT GRAVE SITES - CAMPBELL CO., VIRGINIA. These you will find the spelling in this county for the most part Burnette and the dates don't go that far back but there are some that do. Names and dates are listed under the name of the cemetery they are buried in. If you need any more information on the location of the cemetery, etc., please just ask and I will try and help you. Address for Burnett page, http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/3348/ and just click on the surname Burnett. Have a good day today and a better day tomorrow, Cuzin Waddie
