    1. [VABEDFOR-L] LDS
    2. This was posted to another list that I subscribe to. It is interesting information about the LDS site. Genealogy site is a hit — 7 million times a day By Steve Fidel Deseret News staff writer The LDS Church plans to officially launch the world's largest genealogy Web site Monday morning during a press conference in its Family History Library, the storefront for the world's largest collection of genealogical records. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a public test of the site http://www.FamilySearch.org in April as it prepared for the formal launch. Genealogy is one of the most popular niches of the Internet, and the church's reputation for family history research makes the deployment of a church-run genealogy Web resource a natural. "Tests have already shown that www.familysearch.org may become one of the most popular sites on the Internet. It is already racking up millions of hits a day during its testing period," said an announcement from the church. A separate announcement listed traffic at the site at up to seven million hits per day. The site has search functions that direct users to individual names within massive databases, like the church's International Genealogical Index of 360 million vital records from the British Isles, North America and Finland, and 35 million names arranged by pedigree in the church's Ancestral File. FamilySearch.org also functions as a portal for other genealogy resources and has features to allow family history researchers to collaborate with others to share resources. The site will also collect and preserve research submitted to its database. There is no charge to use the site and no advertising on the site. About two weeks into the church's testing-period preview of the site, the Church Family History Department was honored by the Utah Genealogical Association, which made specific mention of the new Web resource. Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Presidency of the Seventy accepted the award as executive director of the department. "We are excited about our Family Search Internet genealogical service," he said. "FamilySearch will be a powerful research tool, and I am confident it will eventually become an even greater asset over time."

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Lavender Lookup
    2. I am needing a look-up done on the birth of a Joseph Lavender, father is thought to be Charles Lavender(Lavinder) of Bedford Co. VA. He would have been born in 1816-17 and family moved very soon after that to TN. Is there anyone who could do that or give me the name of a geneologist in that area? Thank you very much, Teresa

    2. Lucy McGhee
    3. I'm sorry, but I dont have any info on David Prestion, but the following is informtion on Anna Preston Robertson, including a court record copy. However, this indicates that her first husband was Moses Preston so it may be a different person unless his name was David Moses Preston. You may already have this, but I'm sending it just in case. Descendants of Anna Preston Generation No. 1 1. ANNA1 PRESTON was born Abt. 1745 in VA. She married WILLIAM ROBERTSON II, son of WILLIAM ROBERTSON and MARY BRAGG. He was born Abt. 1733 in Henrico Co., Va, and died 1807 in Chesterfield Co., VA. Notes for ANNA PRESTON: 1820.....PALMER & ABEL Parson - Estate of Ann Preston Robertson Chancery Division, Microfilm Reel #253, Box 5, Franklin Co., Va. (Furnished by Mrs. Mae D. Moore in a lt'r dated 14 Oct. 1981). To the Worshipful Court of Franklin County in Chancery sitting humbly complaining here unto your Worship your orator Palmer Parson & Abel Parson that some time in the year 1783 a certain Thomas Damos of Bedford County sold to Ann Preston, the widow and relict of Moses Preston, dec'd. of said county, a tract of land containing by estimation 194 acres for the sum of L28, that the said Ann Preston had then living by her late husband, six children, to wit: Moses Preston, John Preston, Jesse Preston, Anna Preston who afterwards intermarried with William Smith, Elizabeth - Preston who afterwards intermarried with William Taylor and Sally Preston who afterward intermarried with William Boles, that the said Ann Preston, after the said purchase intermarried with William Robertson, Sr., of Franklin County and had by him three children, infants under the age of 21 years of age at the time of her death which took place about the year (no date given) -. That after the death of the said Ann Robertson (formerly), Ann Preston, the said William Robertson, Sr., who was then only tenant by the courtesy & together with John Preston, William Smith, William Boles and Jesse Preston, conveyed the said land by deed in the year 1804 to Moses Preston one of the heirs of Ann Robertson (formerly Ann Preston), the other heirs William Taylor & Elizabeth his wife refusing to convey their portion of the said land and neither the wives of the said William Smith nor William Boles relinquished their dower in the same. That in consequence of the said conveyance the three children which the said Ann Robertson had by William Robertson and who were equally her heirs with her former six children are excluded from any portion in the said land and deprived of their legal rights, which said deed of conveyance from Robertson & others to Preston is duly admitted to record in this court. That Moses Preston conveyed the whole 1ot of land to your orator who was then ignorant of his defective title to the same in the year 1814 for the sum of $500, three hundred of which was paid off at the time of the purchase by your orator and this court gave to Moses Preston for the remaining two hundred which said bond was traded to the Abram Taylor, dec'd., late of this county. Your orator further states that (illegible) Administrator & Administratix of the said Abram Taylor, dec'd. has instituted suit on your orators on the said bond $84 of which has been paid to the sd. adm't & adm'tx on the common law side of the court which suit now pleads? upon this office judgement docket. All which action and doings are contrary to Equity and good conscience and in as much as your orator was mindful of the premises and only relieved in a court by equity when matters of this sort are cognizable. To the end therefore that the said William Robertson, Sr., John Preston, William Smith and Anna his wife, William Taylor, William Boles and Sally his wife, Jesse Preston, Moses Preston, Littleberry Robertson, Francis Watts and Lydia his wife, formerly Lydia Robertson and Milly Robertson may be made defendants to this bill, that they answer all and singular the allegations herein contained on oath fully and - illegible word - and may it please your Worship to (illegible due to ink smear) judgement of law until this matter can be fully heard in Equity and grant such other & further relief or in equity may seem fair & finally may it please your worship to grant the - - - - - - - - -- of - - - - commonly & as in duty bond your orator will ever pray. Robt. Cook Sworn to in Court by Palmer & Abel Pearson 8th March 1828. C. Tate Marriage Notes for ANNA PRESTON and WILLIAM ROBERTSON: This second marriage confirmed by court records. The children of his second marriage spelled their surname as Robinson. Children of ANNA PRESTON and WILLIAM ROBERTSON are: i. LITTLEBERRY2 ROBERTSON, b. Abt. 1780, VA; m. MARY ANN "NANCY" WATTS, November 28, 1805, Franklin Co., Va. Notes for LITTLEBERRY ROBERTSON: They were living in Breckenridg Co., KY by 1809 ii. LYDIA ROBERTSON, b. Abt. 1783, VA; m. 1. [VABEDFOR-L] David Preston
    2. Mollie wrote me regarding the court1.txt document posted on the intranet regarding the land sale. In this document on the net it states Ann Preston as the widow and reflect of Moses Preston. In researaching this earlier I found a distant cousin who has a photocopy of the original document. She tells me the original actually left the name of Ann's husband blank and it was apparently filled in by someone else, possibly on the intranet. If anyone can shed some light on how this change occurred or why we would really appreciate the help. Further research has verified to me that Ann Preston Robertson's first husband was indeed David Preston, my gggg grandfather. Thanks, Donna

Subject: Markham Cemetery Cleanup Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 09:01:47 -0400 From: Thomas Markham <markm@ictransnet.com> To: MARKHAM Mailing List <MARKHAM-L@rootsweb.com> Attention Markhams!!! and Markham Friends Those of us who are planning to work and help on the Old Markham Cemetery Cleanup, and then on Sunday July 18th go the Covington, Virginia for the MARKHAM REUNION, should bring a covered dish, or bucket of chicken, or something in the picnic theme of food, (already prepared), and drinks. I have been in touch with Virginia Smith, who first brought this Reunion to my attention, and she can be more specific in these matters. If you need additional information, Virginia's E-Mail address is JniWren@aol.com. I will post to the List in several days the directions of where the Reunion in Covington, Va. is to be held, and how to get there. Also I will post the directions as to where the Cemetery Cleanup People will meet on the morning of July 16th, and directions as to how to get there. The Old Markham Cemetery is located in Eastern Botetourt County, on the Western Slope of the Peaks of Otter, on property near Middle Creek, just off state road 614, accessible from I-81 at the first Exit Ramp North of Buchanan, VA. and then on East through Arcadia, Va. on State 614 to Middle Creek Area. In the coming weeks we will be more specific as to the location of all these events. Those who would like to help locate the Other Markham Cemetery in this same area, where Jesse E. Markham's Family is buried, please contact Darryl Winger at DWSteeler@webtv.net to make arrangements. Darryl has been the one, who with help from Floyd Markham, has located the Old Markham Cemetery on Middle Creek, and is now in the process of locating the Old Markham Cemetery (Jesse's) on Jennings Creek. Anyone with information on the location of this second Markham Cemetery please get in touch with Darryl. I have had several inquiries as to who is buried at the John Markham Cemetery on Middle Creek. Virginia Smith has a list compiled by Ossie Markham, about twenty years ago, with all of the names of the People buried at this cemetery. I suggest those who would like this information, get in touch with Virginia. Tommy Markham
