    3. Dear _Mitosis_, I agree, that is really bad. Even worse is the precident it might set. As you let others know about this situation, do not use the following address: http://www.wired.com/news/news/technology/story/20472.htm It does not work. http://www.wired.com/news/news/technology/story/20472.html DOES work because their site is html not htm. Thanks for the heads up. I will contact FlashNet tomorrow to make sure they have not such plans. J. 3. Rec'd from fellow researcher...... Just read the news that Yahoo now owns GeoCities and claims it owns all web pages, articles, and images on member sites and has "irrevocable" rights to them for all time. Your GeoCities web site is no longer your own. http://www.wired.com/news/news/technology/story/20472.htm - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Suppose mail list, family photos, living individuals... including all content you may have placed in private files, now for sale!. Now they will be quick to say with great piety... "I would never..." If you believe that, re-read the beginning paragraph. New York has banned ownership of "dingos, weasels, skunks and vipers". If yahoo is based in New York, then who is running the company???? I, for one, have made my last connect to Yahoo or Geocities. _Mitosis_

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Descendants of James & Elizabeth Robertson Burroughs
    2. Barry & Dana Reagan
    3. This message is for anyone who is a descendant of James Burroughs and Elizabeth Robertson Burroughs. If you are a descendant of this pair, you probably already know that they were the master and mistress of Booker T. Washington, his mother, his brother, his aunt, and several cousins prior to emancipation. The Descendants of Booker T. Washington are having a 2-day reunion in the Roanoke/Franklin County area in June of 2000 and are inviting the Burroughs descendants to be a part of it. Much of it will take place at the Booker T. Washington Memorial Park in Franklin County which is the old Burroughs homeplace. Two of Booker's great grandsons will be coming to Roanoke next week to work on plans for the reunion and have invited me, as a Burroughs descendant, to be a part of it. If you are a Burroughs descendant and would be interested in additional information on this reunion as plans are firmed up, please e-mail me and I will keep you updated on this event. If you are a Burroughs/Robertson descendant and have not visited the Booker T. Washington Memorial Park, please take a free Saturday or Sunday and do so. It is a beautiful place and the staff there is excellent! Dana E. Reagan reagan79@roanoke.infi.net

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Bedford County Records / Smith Mountain Lake
    2. I was wondering where to find records from Bedford County concerning the Smith Mountain Lake area. Dam construction began in 1960 and in that large an area there probably were old cemeteries that needed to be relocated in order to create the lake and dam. Does anyone know where the lists and relocation sites could be found for those cemeteries? Searching for the HOPKINS and MILLS names. Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated. Judy

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Bedford City / Bedford County Clerk of Court
    2. When Bedford became an independent city (please tell me the date) did they inherit all or none of the older Bedford County Records? I am not familiar with the independent city/county situation in Virginia. Are there separate Clerks for the city and for the county for separate court proceedings and deed recordings? The address I have (I actually visited this building once) for the County Clerk is Bedford City/County Virginia Museum 201 East Main Street Bedford, VA 24623 (540) 586-7601 I did not have the impression that I was at the city or county clerks office, but was at the Historical Society and at a museum. Please help me get some focus on the records archives in the city and county? Lonnie

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Samuel Harris
    2. Hello Harris cuzins, I just returned from the library and I found a book titled: Franklin County Virginia, 1786-1986, "A Bicentennial History" written by John S. Salmon and Emily J. Salmon, published 1993 by the Franklin County Bicentennial Committee. The following is an excerpt from that book, pg. 191 "The Dan River church was created largely because of the efforts of North Carolina Baptist Daniel Marshall. Marshall & Dutton Lane, an immigrant to Virginia from Maryland, preached in Pittsylvania County where they were joined by 2 brothers, Joseph and William Murphy. The preachers converted Samuel Harris, a wealthy Pittsylvania County planter and lay reader in the Church of England in 1759. This conversion was a major coup: Harris was a solid citizen, a member of the House of Burgesses, a county justice and a Colonel of the Militia who commanded Fort Mayo. Harris became an itinerant minister and was associated with the establishment of at least 25 Baptist Churches in Virginia between 1767 and 1791" Can anyone identify this Samuel Harris? Who were his parents? Who was he married too? Did he have issue? Is there a website which lists members of the House of Burgesses? Where can I find out more on this Samuel and the Militia at Fort Mayo on-line? Thank you Pat C. Johns

    1. [VABEDFOR-L] Need Name - Book Dealer with "WANTED/WISH" e TN, sw VA, se KY
    2. I am not a book dealer! I am searching for some to add to my too small collection. Please recommend book dealers who maintain a "wanted" list for buyers wanting southwest Virginia, east Tennessee or southeast KY books -- 1740s to pre 1850 history and genealogy subjects -- especially "Early Adventurers on the Western Waters," Kegley, all or any volumes. Since book dealer subjects are sometimes considered controversial, please reply direct or to list if you think appropriate. Many Thanks, Lonnie http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tnwash/
