I am looking for information on John Boblett/Bobletz. He was born 1799 in VA and I found indenture papers in Bedford Co. VA for him in July 1802 to William Saunders and again in August 1807 to John Deardoff. On both papers it mentions his mother Katy Boblett/Bobletz. There is a marriage bond for John Bobletz to Sarah Hoover on 20 February 1816. He shows in 1820 Bedford census and then in 1830 in Mercer Co., Ky. and goes to Washington Co., KY. I am looking for his ancestors. I don't know if Katy was married to a Boblett or if she was a Boblett. Both indenture papers were by the Order (?) of the Poor. John had at least one child born in Bedford Co., James Boblett, that married Elizabeth Pamela Simms in Washington Co., KY. Would like any information/ancestors on this Boblett/Bobletz line and will gladly share any information I have. I just returned from a day spent in Bedford Co. The museum was wonderful, I found the mother lode of info on one of my families, The Arthur's. I was also able to get a good amount of info on my Newman's. The ladies that were there were very helpful and pleasant and the exhibits were very informative, plus the building that the museum is housed in is pretty neat (being a civil engineer I really enjoy old buildings) Gray Newman

The best place to do genealogical research in Bedford is at the Bedford City/County Museum, which is right next to the County Courthouse in Bedford. They have a very nice genealogy collection, maintained by the Bedford County Genealogical Society. I've forgotten their hours. I suggest you also visit the courthouse, which has land records and marriage records (the folks at the Museum can tell you where in the courthouse). Two other places nearby are the Library in Roanoke (next county) and the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg. The best place in Richmond is the State Archives. I've visited all with a fair amount of success. Good luck.
Hi, Would anyone know where to find a list of doctors practicing in Bedford Co. , especially needed are the years 1840-1960 and 1880 -1910.? Would anyone know if or where one would locate maybe doctors notes or payment books. ANything with a patient list? Thanks, Jeri Gallus
Jeri-- My great grandfather was a Dr. who practiced in Bedford Co. Dr. Robert Henry Newman. I don't have much on him now, but my grandmother still has his medical bag. I am going up there this weekend and will try to find out if she still has any of his papers. Gray Newman
Dear Don, This is in reply to your query regarding the Admire Turner cemetery. For convenience, I am copying the Bedford and Wright mailing lists as well. My records list Admire Turner as born in about 1837 or 1838 at Bedford County, Virginia, married to Terrisa J. Wright on June 5, 1867, at Bedford County, Virginia, and residing in 1880 at Bedford County, Virginia, and a farmer in 1880. Terrisa J. (Wright) Turner was born about 1840 at Virginia and probably at Bedford County, and died after May 13, 1891. They had at least two children, Walter Turner, born about 1868 and residing with them in 1880, and Wilbert Turner, born about 1879 and residing with them in 1880. Terrisa J. (Wright) Turner was a daughter of 1869 (year of death) Benjamin P.Wright of Bedford County, Virginia (place of death) and Catherine (Leftwich) Wright, granddaughter of 1835 Benjamin Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, and Mary (Weekes) Wright, great granddaughter of 1814 John Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, and Mary (Pace) Wright, and great great granddaughter of John Wright (Goochland County Carpenter) and Judith (Easly) Wright. I would be happy to exchange information with other researchers interested in this family. Best wishes, Robert N. Edmund and his wife Elizabeth (LAWHORN) HAYNES sold their land in Bedford County ca 1846 and migrated to KY with their 12 children. Edmund died that August in Meade County, KY. I need help getting a copy of the deed selling their VA land. In Deed book 32, page 324 in Bedford County, it is stated that ca 1846 Edmund, Elizabeth "and others of John HAYNES estate" deeded 200+ acres land on Beaverdam Creek to John Buford Sr. I have been unable to get a copy of the deed, because the Bedford County Museum Director says the Deed book has a sewn binding and cannot be photocopied. If anyone has a copy, I would be most grateful if they would send it to me; if one of you has access to the deed books and would hand copy it, I would be glad to pay the expenses and/or fee for the service. I asked a group who preserves and catalogues old cemeteries and this was one of the answers: "Witching sticks" are simply dowsing rods, or divining rods. They have been used to locate everything from water, to pipes, personal belongings, missing persons, etc. When someone wants to find something, they will take a couple rods, and start walking. The theory behind it is that there are "E-rays" that eminate from deep within the Earth, and penetrate through the crust to form neat lattices (about 10cm to 20cm squares), and covers the whole earth. E-rays, supposedly, have negative polarity. When an E-ray penetrates through certain types of matter, they get redirected, and disturbs the neatness of the lattices. Furthermore, redirected E-rays switch to positive polarity. Thus, divining rods are able to detect disturbed positive E-rays. Of course, that's if you believe in that stuff. The talent lies in knowing how to interpret the actions of the divining rods. That is, how do you know if you found water, a body, an artifact, metal, etc.? I've heard that E-rays disturbed by graves cause a lot of wierd things to happen, including the twisting of tree trunks. Steve Johnson
Hello Markham Cousins, and Friends: As I said this morning, we had a wonderful time on Friday July 16th. in the mountains of Botetourt County, just off Middle Creek at the John Markham Cemetery. It is rewarding to spend time thinking of ones heritage, and doing something to preserve the memory of that heritage. In the process of locating the graves at The John Markham Cemetery, we used "Witching Sticks", made of "steel coat hangers" that were straightened out, and the last six inches bent 90 degrees to form a handle. With these "Witching Sticks", we were able to locate graves in the cemetery that were long forgotten, and at least 100 years old. The strange part of all of this was the way that the "Witching Sticks" reacted over the graves. Over the Graves with Male Persons the sticks would open up and point out to the sides of the person carrying them at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel. Over the Graves with Female Persons the sticks would cross directly in front of the person carrying them and go all the way to pointing in an outwardly direction. This Phenomena was tried over graves of known persons with the results being the same each time it was tried. My first reaction when I was doing the "Witching" was that of a Divine intervention, but when I came to my senses, I thought there must be some scientific explanation. I would like to know the reason for this difference, and would like for someone who knows about this practice to explain to me what is the cause of this reaction. If no one can be found, would someone who has assess to a person of higher learning, preferable in the scientific community, try to get an explanation, and pass it along. For those skeptics, I would suggest that you try this yourself, maybe you can come up with the answer. Please let me hear from you. Tommy
