Is there a list of churches and the ministers of the Southern District Bedford County from 1753 to 1875? or even to 1919? I have several gguncles in the LEFTWICH family who were ministers, but I don't know of what church. Also have the ministers who performed many JOHNSON weddings but don't know the religious affiliate. Is there a publication or a CD somewhere? Would appreciate all the help I can get in this matter. Thanks, The Prossers of Richmond lprosser@erols.com

Hello, My family has been unable to determine the origin of our ancestor Samuel Majors and his wife Abigail West, other than they were both born somewhere in Va. in 1778 and 1779. Sam and Abby were married Dec. 28, 1798 in Bedford Co. Va. and we have checked into many different MAJORS in Culpeper and Madison Counties but have not proven any one person to be a parent or sibling of Samuel. Abigail's parents were Joseph West and Sarah Romigh-West. We know that Samuel Majors along with his wife Abigail moved to Beaver County, PA. and acquired a large farm sometime after their first child was born in 1800 and before the birth of their second child in 1803. It was suggested to me to check into Land and Probate records for the counties of Culpeper, Madison and Bedford. Can someone tell me who I need to contact to find these records? Library, Court House, Genealogical Society? Does anyone know of a book or CD which might have this information? Any assistance with this information is appreciated !! Dana Majors-Lewis Melbourne, FL.
Looking for record of Abner Snows wife of Campbell, Bedford and Pittsylvania Co. Va. after the Civil War. Listed on 1860 Census as Patsy. There was a child at the bottom of the Census list named Benjamin Harrison. Maybe Patsy was a Harrison before she married Abner. Katherine Snow
Dear Isabelle, Thanks so much for the caution regarding data in "Our Kin." Speaking for myself, any data is better than no data, for at least it gives me direction. As proven data (contrary to the book) is unearthed, it should be reported here with the proof documentation source. In addition, I would be willing to establish a separate "Our Kin" page on my web site listing any proven data and its source. I am particularly interested in providing correct data on my web site. With over 20,000 individuals on my personal database, searching out proven documentation on each person is impossible without the help of others. For immediate family and direct line descendants, I have personal knowledge, as well as birth, death and marriage certificates. In addition, I have found Social Security Applications extremely useful for later, deceased individuals. When I get a chance to update my web site, I will be linking the data with its source. Thanks again for the heads-up on the data in "Our Kin." J. Goforth ------------------------------------------------------------------------ My Family Tree at http://www.flash.net/~maclover/
Does anyone have any information on Catherine Franklin who married William Wilkerson on Sept. 27, 1805, in Campbell CO, VA? I would like to know whom her parents were. Her grandfather, Edmund Franklin, gave consent so I suspect both parents were deceased. Anna - Phoenix, AZ - USA * * Wild Wild West * * annaw4@prodigy.net
In my post last Monday Aug. 23, 1999, I ask for help in regards to information about Mary Susan Markham, who was suppose to have married ? Gilmore. I have received help that is fastly bringing this mystery to a head, and for this I am thankful. When we have finished I will post my findings to the list, as they are quite interesting. I have a snag at one point that I think someone on the list could help me clear up. In the 1860 Virginia Census, Botetourt County, Va., Pam Garrett has listed: Jesse Markham 59 bc. 1801 Va. pg. 326. Wife Mary 50 Va., ch- Solomon 21, Alex 18, Mary W 21, Rebecca 16, Sarah W 14. I know some of this information is incorrect, such as Jesse's age he was born in 1809 Washington Co., Va., but the thing that I need to have checked is the child Mary W 21, whose age is wrong for Mary S. Markham. If someone has the actual census files or tapes for the 1860 Virginia Census, Botetourt County, Va. I would greatly appreciate if they would look up Jesse Markham, and his family and let me know what it actually reads. Many Thanks Tommy Markham

This was copied from the VACAROLI-L@rootsweb.com with permission. "If you knew of anyone who had an ancestor who fought in the Civil War and whose grave needed a marker, the Federal Government is still paying to have one created for the veteran. Jason Lewis just wrote the email I include below and though he lives in Alabama, he has offered to answer questions or help anyone who needs more guidance on ordering a marker. I personally was unaware of such a government program til Jason wrote and asked me to post it on the Alabama site. '"....Go to the county courthouse and then go to the Veteran Affairs Dept. Tell them that you want to order a Confederate marker. You need to have proof that these people served in the Confederate army, such as an official muster roll pension application or some kind of other proof. You need to have date of birth and death and place of burial. You will have go and get the marker from the place that it is send to and place it down yourself. I have mine sent to a funeral home and they call me when it comes in. If I can help out anybody, please give them my e-mail address or telephone# 205-921-5180." Jason Lewis WMMILLS@webtv.net"' "by the way.... If there is a stone already on the grave, then the veteran would not be entitled to a free one from the Federal Gov't." Lots of work and effort and no compensation other than the satisfaction of knowing that these men are finally getting a decent marker.

Just in case you haven't heard and are planning to visit the Bedford Co. courthouse, it has moved. The old, historic courthouse building in the center of Bedford City is undergoing a two year renovation project. The courts and all of Bedford County's records have moved to a temporary facility about two miles from the old location. The new address is 1635 Venture Blvd., which is off of Independence Blvd. The hours are still from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, but the computers go off line around 4:30 pm. If you need directions, you can call the clerk of either the General District Court or the Circuit Court at 540-586-7637 or 540-586-7632, respectively. I have been working on my family genealogy for over twenty years, and have gotten a long way, especially since I have joined several mail list that are involved in like activities. I have hit a brick wall, on the research of one of the Jesse E. Markham's Children, and need help. My great great grandfather, Jesse E. Markham 1808-1900, who lived on Jennings Creek in Botetourt County, Virginia, and the assumed son of Nathaniel E. Markham, had seven children. His first daughter and third child was Mary Susan Markham, born Abt. 1837, and married ? Gilmore. In a Land Deed dated June 21, 1899, just one year before his death, Jesse E. Markham deeded Mary Susan Gilmore, approximately sixty (60) acres of his home place on Jennings creek, as reward for her , and I quote, faithfully care for me, and the nursing of my wife Mary Markham now deceased, end quote, providing that she continue to live with and care for him during the remainder of his life. This deed also names as a third party to this transaction, Aubrey Russell Watts, an infant son of the said Mary Susan Gilmore. As per this deed information, Aubrey Russell Watts was born on the 25th of October, 1895. This deed goes on to say that if Mary Susan Gilmore dies before her son Aubrey Russell Watts! attains the age of twenty one, he is to take possession of this land until he reaches 21 years of age, at which time the land will laps to the remaining heirs of Jesse E. Markham. As you can see, this land was never ment to stay in the possession of Mary Susan Gilmore or Aubrey Ryssell Watts after their death, but to revert to the Sisters and Brothers of Mary Susan Gilmore. I have spent over eight months, with the help of several of my fellow researchers, trying to find out who this son of Mary Susan Gilmore was, and why he was named Watts. Also we have been trying to find out who this Gilmore person was that Mary Susan Markham married. In all of the census records that we have looked at, there has been no mention of any of these persons living together or being anyway connected. A few facts that you may find interesting and helpful, are as follows: 1.- Mary Susan Gilmore was a co-signer with JND Markham on a land sale of property to the Federal Government in the forming of The Jefferson Notional Forrest in the early 1920's with Aubrey Russell Watts, as one of the witness's to this deed. This land was part of that left to Mary Susan Gilmore by Jesse E. Markham. 2.- In the 1880 VA soundex Jesse Markham 72 bc. 1808 6-13-7-9 (census indicates born c. 1808 Washington co, VA.) residing with him Susan Watts 21 (born Bedford co, Va.) Charles Markham (Note: This census info. came from Pamela Hutchison Garrett) 3.- In 1900 VA. soundex Markham J. E. 7-49-17-94 white, Mar 1808, 92 Botetourt Co., Buchanan Lives Alone (Note: Where has Mary Susan Gilmore gone?, Where is Aubrey Russell Watts? 4.- Jesse Solomon Markham, Mary Susan Markham Gilmore's brother named his first male child Aubrey Russell Markham born 1871. Was named in census of 1880 as second child, Note: could have died as a child, not in 1900 soundex. Was Aubrey Russell Watts named after Aubrey Russell Markham? I need help from anyone who might have any information, on any aspect of this investigation. As I said at first we have hit a brick wall, and do not know where to go from here. You can reach me at markm@ictransnet.com Thank You, Tommy Markham
