    3. Well, generally speaking, all people in the early days of photography looked somber and sad. I've been told that people were generally instructed not to smile because they had to hold a pose longer when photography was slower, and it is more difficult to hold a smile than a somber expression. The kids probably picked this up (although while zooming in close to these kids while working on this photo, I could almost see them fidgeting, and some actually are smiling). (Which, BTW, if anyone saw the movie Cold Mountain with Nicole Kidman back in 2003... she gave Inman a photograph before he went off to the Civil War, and she apologized for not smiling. This was an anachronism in the movie, because one would not have thought of apologizing for not smiling in a photo back in those days). 3. My Mom is Bertie Saunders (now Trent) who is the first kid on the first row. Her older brother, Clinton Saunders, is sitting behind her, and their first cousin, Paul Miller, is standing on the left behind Clinton. My mother's two older sisters, Iva and Pearl, are in the back row on the right. I'm particularly interested in the Byrd children. I know they are distantly related to me, but I haven't tied them back into my family tree. If anyone knows of the connection, I would welcome the information. In the picture are Orie, Homer, Clay, Sallie Willie, and sitting beside my mother Carrie Byrd (Arthur). Carrie (Virginia Byrd) Arthur passed away on February 19 of this year. The obituary states that Orie, Homer, and Clay have also died (I think I saw Orie's obit a few months ago). My mother said that she was wearing her "Sunday best white dress" that day that had been handed down to her from her older sister Pearl. :-) Their teacher, Kathleen Taylor, is in the other picture. 3. For a long time, I have wanted to add web pages with old and sometimes unknown pictures to my website. I seem to have received many pictures over the years from people who didn't know what to do with them. I have always welcomed such pictures. I recently found a picture that my Mom had of the kids at Pleasant Hill School where she went to school. She thinks she was about 9 years old in the picture, so it would have been about 1927 or 1928. Pleasant Hill School was located on 3 acres of what was originally the Saunders property, which consisted of 100 acres when Smith Mountain Lake was created. After the lake was created in the 1950/60's, there were about 33 acres left. My Uncle Clinton (who is in the picture) moved into the school and converted it to a house and lived there until he died in 1997. The house still stands, but has been sold outside the family. My mother gave me the names of all of the children in the picture, as best as she could remember them. I have scanned, restored, and posted it on the internet. I invite you to go and view the picture. See if any of the kids in the picture are your parents or grandparents. I have listed the kids names underneath the picture, but if you hold your mouse cursor over each individual in the picture, it will tell you their names (I have links on those family members who are on my website). I have a second picture that looks like it was taken the same day, which I am working on restoring and processing. I'll get it up on the web as soon as I am finished. Some of the kid's names are questionable. If you can help clarify or correct any of them, then your comments will certainly be welcome. I'd love to hear if you know any of the people in the picture! The web address for the picture is: http://genealogy.drema.com/genealogy/photographs/BedfordCountySchoolChildren.html Drema

    1. RE: [VABEDFOR] William Ashford Saunders
    2. Drema Swader
    3. Well, looking at this info, I think I might be interested in his grandchildren. Is there a grandson named William Ashford Saunders? The reason I am asking is that there is an obituary in the Lynchburg paper (Friday, April 7, 2006) for James W. Saunders, son of William Ashford Saunders and Fannie Jones. I thought I might be able to connect him to my Saunders, so I looked in my database and found William Ashford Saunders married to Winifred Keesee. Since this senior William Ashford Saunders was born about 1831, he would have been too old to be the father of James W. Saunders in the obituary, but possibly a grandfather or great grandfather. I find this line very interesting, since it is descended from Amos Saunders, half brother to Daniel Green Saunders. How are you related to this family? Can you send me what you have on this branch? Thanks, Drema At 07:40 AM 4/7/2006, you wrote: >Drema >I have 12 children for this couple.
