    3. doc, GREAT!! I have asked Freddie to start a "did you know" series on the Revolutionary War. In this way everyone can post little or BIG tidbits that pertain to the War. We really need to remember WHY we celebrate the Fourth of July. 3. For those of you who will be visiting the Bedford fair in September..... If any of you had ancestors who fought in the Revolution in the Battle of Point Pleasant you might want to visit the Court House and view a plaque put there by the "Peaks of Otter Chapter of the DAR". I have copied and pasted from by new Buford Book the following: On October 31st, 1931 in Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia the 'Peaks of Otter Chapter' of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) laid a Memorial Tablet to the memory of Captain John Thomas Buford and his company of volunteers who fought and laid down their lives in the Battle of Point Pleasant which occurred on October 10th, 1774. They ask the noted historian and author of many history and genealogy books; Landon C. Bell, to dedicate the memorial tablet with a speech. He did so with the following, historically based, speech. (Not included here) I have a roster of the men who were with Captain Buford if you are interested. Also, the Museum in Bedford should have Mr. Bell's speech. If not, I can copy and past that as well for you. Actually, I have a picture of the memorial tablet but I can't send that to the list. Have a great week-end everybody. Fern

    1. Replying to the list
    2. Judith Arnn-Knight
    3. Hi--I am the one who asked your list administrator to say a few words on replying to the list--it was not my intention to start a whole discussion about it and I do apologize. I am an administrator for another list and am aware that all the messages are archived on the rootsweb.com servers so we are wasting a lot of space when we repeat the same things over and over again. The key is to just cut and paste a little from the message to which you are replying and not hit the return re-posting every message that has already been sent a couple of times. All messages we post to this and any rootsweb.com listserv are archived on the rootsweb.com servers. The messages for this list are to be found at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/VABEDFOR This provides our messages in chronological order so if you are having trouble or have lost the thread of the discussion you can just go to the above URL and read to your heart's content. If you are trying to pick up the threads of an old message string and cannot remember when the postings occurred go to: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and select VABEDFOR -- this will take you to the Bedford messages and you can enter search terms. For example--if other folks have posted info on accomodations for the Fair in past years you can use keywords such as "accomodations fair" [without the quoatation marks] and select the year you want and it will search those words in that year in all messages posted. If you are receiving the messages in digest--please do NOT hit reply to post to a message--this generates a subject of the the Digest Number and date, not the subject of whatever you are replying to. Retype the subject because those of us who are not in the digest mode to receive messages get a meaningless subject; I try to eliminate messages I have no interest in by looking at the subject as I am sure you do also. Thanks for listening. Happy posting judith knight

    2. In a message dated 6/22/2006 9:34:51 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I have also been in touch with Diane Wilson of the Inn on Avenel B & B and she will offer special room rates of $70/night (plus tax) making the total $77/night. Tom & Diane offer a wonderful "made from scratch" breakfast with superb accomodations. The Inn on Avenel is just a few block from Centertown Bedford. You I can offer a personal statement about the Inn. My wife and I stayed there for last year's Genealogy Fair. It is a wonderful B&B, the house is great, the breakfast is a work of art and the hosts are great fun. I even found some helpful info on my family in one of the many books they have on hand. Space is limited and, as I recall, there is a shared bath with a marvelous old claw-foot bathtub in which to luxuriate. Mike Beard Washington, DC

    3. And for those of us who have been around for awhile, it's always nice to easily see what the topic at hand is without having to dig through old emails to figure out what someone is talking about (if the emails haven't been deleted). Threads continued in emails are a convenient way of continuing a discussion, and is sometimes necessary. It's nice that others can remember the contents of every email they receive, but I get a very large number, and my memory isn't as good as it used to be! :-) Drema http://genealogy.drema.com At 07:54 AM 6/23/2006, [email protected] wrote: >However, for those of us who have recently subscribed to the list, >been away for awhile, etc., it is helpful to see the question being >responded to. > > >----- Original Message ----- >From: John Knobelsdorf <[email protected]> >Date: Friday, June 23, 2006 10:30 am >Subject: Re: [VABEDFOR] Replying to the list >To: [email protected] > > > AMEN, Brother. > > > > I really appreciate not having my messages repeated back to me. > > > > I can remember what I said or asked. > > > > Thanks. > > > > John Knobelsdorf > > San Antonio, Texas > > > > > > ==== VABEDFOR Mailing List ==== > > The Bedford Co VAGenWeb "Family WebPages" list is located at URL: > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~vabedfor/bedf-web.htm > > > > >==== VABEDFOR Mailing List ==== >The list administrator can be contacted at address: > [email protected] OR [email protected]

    1. Special Rates on Accomodations for Bedford Genealogy Fair
    2. The Mehaffeys
    3. As promised I have made contact with two local establishments for special rates for the genealogy gathering. The Super 8 (Bedford's newest motel) normally has room rates of $62/night (plus tax). I spoke with Martha Lester, Manager today and she is willing to offer rooms at $44/night (plus tax) for Sept 8th & 9th. At present, she has 20 room available at this price. She also has several suites, which include an in-room jacuzzi that she will offer at $64/night (plus tax). To contact the motel direct, the number is 540-587-0100. Mention Bedford Genealogy Fair and you will get the special rates. The Super 8 is within the city limits, located on 460 East behind the VA State Police headquarters office and is easy driving distance to the fair. I have also been in touch with Diane Wilson of the Inn on Avenel B & B and she will offer special room rates of $70/night (plus tax) making the total $77/night. Tom & Diane offer a wonderful "made from scratch" breakfast with superb accomodations. The Inn on Avenel is just a few block from Centertown Bedford. You may contact them at: Tom and Diane Wilson, 416 Avenel Ave., Bedford, VA 24523, (540) 586-5978 (e-mail [email protected]). Bedford is located between Roanoke and Lynchburg--aproximately 25 miles from each city. We are at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. You might check out these websites for more local information on our town including restaurants and other accomodations: www.visitbedford.com and www.centertownbedford.com I can speak highly of these establishments listed above and have had a longtime relationship with both. If you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Leslie Overstreet Mehaffey [email protected] Bedford, VA

    2. I am very interested in your information on the Mitchell side of your family. My great-grandmother, Nancy Jane Parker "Mitchell" Taylor married William Mitchell in about 1856. There were three children by this marriage. Their names were Sally who married a Spickard; Mary, who married a Smith, and James, who married a Lucy ( do not remember the last name. There is a fourth child, Robert. Robert, who was born in March of 1865, carried the name Mitchell. His "father" died in route to the Army Medical Hospital at Front Royal, Virginia. My great-grandmother remarried in June of 1867. There were seven children by this marriage. My grandfather, Samuel Thomas Taylor was the fourth child. I look forward to hearing from you. 3. If you plan on eating in Bedford, you had better bring your own lunch. We drove around for almost an hour looking for a place to eat and finally had to settle for a 'fast food' dump that didn't look very clean. The next day we had the hotel pack us a lunch which was delicious. Be sure and drive over to the "Natural Bridge". It has a lot of history connected with it. Good Luck, Fern

    3. WHY couldn't this thread have started before my trip to Bedford this past weekend???? :-) I stayed at the Days Inn. It was typical Days Inn - fairly spartan, but clean. My only complaint was that the A/C hadn't been turned on during the day and the room smelled a bit musty. It was a first trip, and a short one - had only 1/2 day at the museum on Saturday before I had commitments elsewhere - but also fruitful. I'll be posting questions regarding my BEARDS and MITCHELLS as I sift through stuff. Not sure if I'll be able to make it to the Genealogy Fair or not - but am looking at it. Will see if there is anything going on in the area that might appeal to my husband.Janie Darby _________________________________________________________________ Add photos, news, and blogs about the World Cup to your Live.com homepage! http://www.live.com/getstarted
