I'd like to join the discussion on this one interesting topic. My current opinion is different lists of men who served in the Revolution were created at different times by different people for different reasons. I don't know for sure, but I don't think there is any one complete list of officers and enlisted men from Bedford which covers the entire period. A few years ago I came across a book title listed as "Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War" by J. T. McAllister, published 1913. Not having any luck finding a copy I eventually received a new volume via Library Loan. Heritage Books, Inc. had republished and re-copyrighted in 1989; (337 pages incl. index) The author (McAllister) stated his sources of information were mainly from the counties where documents were recorded. These lists give the date of nomination or the commission, and wherever possible, the captains under whom the lieutenants and ensigns served. McAllister also said It was evident that the record was not always complete, and that in some instances an officer was undoubtedly sworn in, although the date of recommendation can be found on the Order Book. For Bedford County McAllister listed the names of 141 men with dates from 1778 through 1781. These are the designated rankings: County Lieutenant, Lieutenant (when there was nothing to show whether first or second), Captain, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, Ensign. Some of the names don't appear on other lists I've seen. Respecting the copyright, I can only tell you how many names appear by the first letter of the surnames. I'll be glad to look up 1 or 2 names at a time by private e-mail. A Happy and Memorable July 4th to all ! A- 7 names N- 2 names B- 11 " O- 1 " C- 17 " P- 9 " D- 7 " Q- 1 " E- 5 " R- 7 " F- 5 " S- 4 " G- 10 " T- 11 " H - 8 " U- 0 " I- 4 " V- 1 " J- 6 " W- 8 " K- 0 " X,Y,Z - 0 names L- 7 " M- 10

For instance, I have been reading some books by David McCullough about the Revolution and the main characters who formed our constitution. Just finished reading his John Adams and 1776. Both books I found to be fantastic reading and enough "Did you knows" in them to post for months. David McCullough is a Pulitzer Prize winner and has written a lot of books on some of our 'late' presidents including George Washington, John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams just to name a few. I am sure we have enough avid readers in our midst to be valuable contributors to the "Did you Know" thread. If and when Freddie gives his OK we can all start contributing what we have read and perhaps when the Fourth of July rolls around we can really appreciate what the 4th of July means other than fireworks, hot dogs, beer and a day off. H i, everyone. I am new to this and if I don't use proper etiquette please let me know. My father was John Thomas Mitchell. He was born somewhere in Bedford county. His brothers were Samuel and Dallis(?) and he had one sister Evylin(?) They were all born in early 1900's. I believe that I still have cousins in the area. If any one would like to share I have a whole new branch of Mitchells to tell about. Oh, my grandfather was William and grandma Lorena. I am making arrangements to come for the fair in Sept. I live in Washington state so I don't have all of the details worked out yet. But I will. See you there Cheryl

Fern That would be a fun thing, ... however the mailing list is only for postings regarding the County's families & history. So we should keep postings limited to the Bedford area's participation in the Revolution. Regards, Freddie S. Hi Freddie, I was wondering if it would be a fun idea and a small way of 'sparking' everyone's feeling of patriotism to have a "Did you know" posting to the list of things rarely known about the brave Men and Women who fought in the Revolution.

Posting info about the Revolutionary war is fine as long as we stick to the theme of these mailing lists, which is genealogy. While genealogy obviously overlaps history, all of history is not a study of genealogy. When we start posting tidbits and information to remind people of why we celebrate the Fourth of July and not for the purpose of identifying or celebrating ancestors who fought in the war, we cross the line from genealogy discussions to purely historical discussions, and with political overtones at that. Before everyone goes on a "posting" rampage about the Revolutionary War, please ask yourself if the posting has genealogical relevance. Thanks, Drema At 03:12 PM 6/24/2006, Fern wrote: >Well doc, it never occurred to me that someone would say something >without giving the source of the information. Hey Suzy, Hey Cuz. If you are related to Moses Hurt and Ruth Turner, that would make us cousins. I'd have to look it up, but I think Moses Hurt was my 15th great-grandfather. Do you know of a Betty Joyce of Henry Co.? As far as I know she as done the most research on the HURT'S of Bedford, Franklin, Campbell and Roanoke Cos. I don't I you plan on going to the Genealogy Fair in September or not, but I'm going to try to be there, for I live in Virginia Beach, VA. I've only been here a few months, I lived in Roanoke for over 40 years. My youngest son and daughter live here and I was having a health problem and just come to Roanoke and said that I was moving to Virginia Beach and here I am. I plan to leave for Roanoke on Monday and I'll be there for about a week. Send me your phone number and the times that you will be home and I'll give you a call. If you would rather wait until your husband, if you have one, gets home, I do understand. My main goal in life is to make friends, not to lose friends. Other than the creator family and friend are very important to me. I do not know or like strangers. Hope to talk and or see you some time next week. Hi Fern - I don't think my health will ever allow me to get to Bedford. I would be interested in those who fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant. I had plenty of family in VA during Revolutionary times so I would be interested in who did participate. If it is okay to list those men, please, I would appreciate it -- as I am sure others would also. Would you please send it to me also? I am wondering if James Stiff is on that list. I'm also interested in Hurts. My husband descends from Mary Alphia Hurt who died around 1813 in Bedford Co. My records say she was the daughter of Moaz Hurt (d 28 July 1806) and his wife Ruth Turner. I've not tried to prove this so please correct me if my information is incorrect. Does anyone know the father of Moaz Hurt and where he was born? Thanks, Suzy Hinrichs
Hey Fern, Yes, I'm interested in any Revolution War history that might contain info on my HURT'S of Bedford Co., VA.
