    2. That database (Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War) is in Ancestry.com. Perhaps it will be free to view on July 4th, because they have allowed their military databases to be free in past years on that day. ---- Norma Nyberg <[email protected]> wrote: > Are there any CRANE/CRAINE or HOLTs on that list, William? > > Norma Nyberg > > william hunt <[email protected]> wrote: > > A few years ago I came across a book title listed as "Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War" by J. If any of you had ancestors who fought in the Revolution in the Battle of Point Pleasant you might want to visit the Court House and view a plaque put there by the "Peaks of Otter Chapter of the DAR". I have copied and pasted from by new Buford Book the following: On October 31st, 1931 in Bedford, Bedford County, Virginia the 'Peaks of Otter Chapter' of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) laid a Memorial Tablet to the memory of Captain John Thomas Buford and his company of volunteers who fought and laid down their lives in the Battle of Point Pleasant which occurred on October 10th, 1774. They ask the noted historian and author of many history and genealogy books; Landon C. Bell, to dedicate the memorial tablet with a speech. He did so with the following, historically based, speech. (Not included here) I have a roster of the men who were with Captain Buford if you are interested. Also, the Museum in Bedford should have Mr. Bell's speech. If not, I can copy and past that as well for you. Actually, I have a picture of the memorial tablet but I can't send that to the list. Have a great week-end everybody. 2. Hi, Donna and all..... One name that does not appear on many of the lists is James Kasey. According to family legend he was in the militia. He fought at the Guilford Courthouse, Yorktown, and other places. I don't think he was an officer, though. The story goes that when he was called, his eldest son, Alexander, who was about six, would go with his dad to the designated place and then ride the horse back home. Of course, James was said to be a deserter from the British Navy and I think he was trying to stay under the radar, so to speak! I'm not sure the Shaons were in VA in time to fight in the Rev War.......they were probably too young and still in Maryland. I'd like to know if the William Keneday mentioned was "our" William..........William and James did sign a petition in Boutetout Co. in about 1770 and went to Bedford about the same time. Anyone else have any different or more info on these guys? Sally Kasey Emily

    3. I think you're right. Add to that the comparatively primitive communications system and conditions they were operating under, and I wonder that we have as much as we do. When you add to this that these were volunteers whose periods of service were often dictated by the very real necessity of getting in the harvest or having their families face starvation, and you have people who served over two or more periods of time, depending on where they were and what was going on. If there was nothing happening in their local area, and they were in the militia, they went home. A few years ago I came across a book title listed as "Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War" by J. T. McAllister, published 1913. Not having any luck finding a copy I eventually received a new volume via Library Loan. Heritage Books, Inc. had republished and re-copyrighted in 1989; (337 pages incl. index) The author (McAllister) stated his sources of information were mainly from the counties where documents were recorded. These lists give the date of nomination or the commission, and wherever possible, the captains under whom the lieutenants and ensigns served. McAllister also said It was evident that the record was not always complete, and that in some instances an officer was undoubtedly sworn in, although the date of recommendation can be found on the Order Book. 1. Bedford- Tories and the Lynch affair. WATTS?
    2. Can someone shed some light on the people in Bedford who were accused of Treason? I have found conflicting reports concerning what happened. I have found sketchy information concerning the affair but not much of substance. Can someone point me to more information about this? My main interest is in the Watts who was accused of treason allegedly for signing a document or pledge? There are hints that there was more to it than this. There is a good possibility that my ancestor Thomas Watts who was later in Georgia was involved. There were so many Thomas Watts at that time that I have never been sure about this. 3. I can offer a personal statement about the Inn. My wife and I stayed there for last year's Genealogy Fair. It is a wonderful B&B, the house is great, the breakfast is a work of art and the hosts are great fun. I even found some helpful info on my family in one of the many books they have on hand. Space is limited and, as I recall, there is a shared bath with a marvelous old claw-foot bathtub in which to luxuriate. A great place to eat in Bedford is the Old Liberty Station - for dinner or lunch (not open on Sundays). Their food is out of this world - we were there for our anniversary last year, and we were there about 5 years before that, and the food and ambience was still great!!!! It's not the most inexpensive place to eat, but it's nice. (And their cheesecake is to die for). Kathy

    2. Doug Phelps
    3. An active investigation of the 1700s Virginia Phelps lines is underway. Y-DNA male line testing will provide proof as to whether these lines are related. The test is private (I can explain further) and the Y_DNA is strictly "junk" dna and has no relationship to physical characteristics. A map of the approximate locations of these lines is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jamesphelpsresearch/va1850map.gif We very much want to find male descendants of the Phelps line in Bedford - or other early Phelps lines - if they are reasonably sure of their ancestry. The more certain you are the more the chance the other tested Phelps would pay for the test. I am the Phelps Project volunteer administrator.
