Doris, Dr. Landon was very well known and respected in the early part of the 20th century. He has many publications under his belt. He is the man who the "Peaks of Otter Chapter" of DAR asked to give the speech when the memorial tablet was laid in honor of Captain John Thomas BUFORD and his volunteer company of Bedford men who fought Chief Cornstock at Point Pleasant October 10th 1774. This is the speech I have quoted in my new BUFORD book and the roster that I have sent to so many on this list. Some of his other publications Are: Charles Parish, York County, Virginia : History and Registers, Births, 1648-1789 and Deaths, 1665-1787 Sunlight on the Southside : Lists of Tithes, Lunenburg County, Virginia, 1748-1783 Cumberland Parish : Lunenburg County, Virginia 1746-1816, Vestry Book 1746-1816 Lunenburg County, Virginia Wills 1756-1825 Fern ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doris Christian" <[email protected]> CUMBERLAND PARISH Lunenburg County, Virginia 1746‑1816 Vestry Book By LANDON C. Benjamin is my gr.gr. grandfather. One of his 3 sons, William Isaac Fuqua is my gr. grandfather. Ollie Ruth Fuqua (dau of William Isaac and Vergie West Fuqua) is my grandmother. Many years ago, my brother inherited the Civil War Sword Benjamin carried in battle and has had it mounted along with Benjamin's military history. All that is missing is a photo of Benjamin. If there is anyone who possibly has a photograph of Benjamin I would love to hear from them and obtain a copy for my brother. Thank you ever so much Pat C. Johns in Va.

William and Doc I have a Ruth Turner married to Moses Hurt circa 1749. Elizabeth Turner marrying a Hunt, this was probably mid 1700s. I think the Hurt's named two children Littleberry and Barthsheba. The kicker to me is, name Bathsheba/Barsheba, Turner who was sister to Elizabeth Hunt and maybe aunt to Ruth Hurt? Bathsheba married Thomas Overstreet Jr, whose son named Littleberry. Just wondering out loud. This was in Bedford and Franklin Counties Va. gerald preas dallas tx --- DOC HURT <[email protected]> wrote: > Hey William, > I know that you are a HUNT, but can you tell me > anything about the HURT'S of > Bedford Co.? > > Thanks > Happy Hunting > doc > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "william hunt" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2006 6:17 PM > Subject: [VABEDFOR] Bedford Co. Just a Note on this surname This name is one of the most mispelled names in early documents in Colonial Virginia. WHY When these records where discyhpered the R and the N's of this name can turn the whole name around. So when the person transcribing these early records might was looking at the OLD ENGLISH WRITINGS, THE N might be interpeted as HURT, and the R might be interpeted as a HUNT. I am interested in the Kelley/Kelly family of Bedford County and would be happy to share information with any Kelley or Sledd researchers. Garrett (Gerrott) Kelley is listed in Capt. Thomas Buford's Company of Bedford County, VA Volunteers. Alexander Kelly is listed in Captain John Lewis' Company of Volunteers, Botetourt County, Va. Both Garrett (Gerrott) Kelley and Alexander Kelly are listed on the website: List of Soldiers at the Battle of Point Pleasant http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvmason/roster.html I believe that Garrett Kelley and Alexander Kelley/Kelly were brothers of my 4th-g grandfather, James Kelley, b. 1758 in Bedford County, Va. James married Elizabeth Sledd 6 Nov 1787 in Amherst Co VA. On James Kelley's Rev. War Pension record, he stated that he served a total of 15 months. He volunteered "under Capt. James Bluford [Buford?], in Colonel Lewis' Regiment under General Christy [Christian?], Commander-in-Chief. Fought against the Cherokee Indians. Two months service." That was in August 1776. 1779: James Kelley was drafted for his second tour of duty under Captain John Paxton, Col. George Skillron, General Hande, Commander. Fought against the Shawnee Indians. Two months service. 1780: James Kelley enlisted as a State Soldier (Virginia) for his third tour of duty, under John Graves Captain, James Lucus Colonel, General Stephens Commander. They had a skirmish with Tarleton's Horse at Sloan's Ferry on the Yadkin River. Eight months service. 1781: James Kelley enlisted for his fourth tour of duty and served under Captain Calloway, Col. Tucker, and General Lawson. He was at the siege of York when Lord Cornwallis was captured. Three months service. Also, in "The Annals of Southwest Virginia" by Lewis Preston Summers, p. 1,419: "Officers and a partial list of the privates accompanying Col. William Christian upon the Cherokee Expedition in August, 1776: "First Battalion: Colonel William Christian, Major Evan Shelby, Surgeon Joseph Starke Second Battalion: Colonel Charles Lewis, Surgeon George Hart The Captains were listed as: Isaac Bledsoe, Robert Boggs, John Campbell, William Cocke, Benjamin Gray, Aaron Lewis, Thomas Madison, John Montgomery, William Preston, William Russell, John Sevier, Daniel Smith, James Thompson, and Jacob Womack." Among the many listed as Privates were: James Buford, Jacob Early, Peter Huff, Samuel Ingram, William Ingram, JAMES KELLY (p. 1,420), Johnathan Martin, Samuel Martin, Robert Preston, Joshua Renfro, Daniel Smith, David Smith, James Thomas, Isaac Thomas, Benjamin Thomas, Peter Turney (perhaps Turner?), and James Young." Paula Kelley Ward [email protected] Inside every older person is a younger person -- wondering what the hell happened. -Cora Harvey Armstrong-

I thought it might be of interest to some who do original research to read part of the main source J. T. McAllister used in his compilation of Bedford officers. The Court Order Books exist, for the most part, from 1754 and have been microfilmed and indexed by the Bedford Circuit Court. Therefore the records are readily accessible for search and copying.
