Doc, Virginia Living is not a book; it is a magazine. I subscribe to it. It is found in the better hotels in Virginia. Some doctor's offices have it, too. There are back issues available. You can contact them in one of two ways. The first is VIRGINIALIVING.COM, and the second is by phone (804) 343-7539. The address of the magazine is 109 East Cary Street, Richmond, Virginia 23286-0647. Good luck in your search. Merilyn Finn
To Anyone Who is Looking for Marriages in the Bedford Area: I too have had problems, in the past, finding marriages. When I went to the Marriage Index at the Library of Virginia, I found that my great-grandparents were married in Fincastle in Botetourt County -- George Thomas Taylor and Nancy Jane Parker "Mitchell" Taylor. The index at the library is most helpful; but if their marriage was not listed as with my grandfather's sister and brother, it will not be of help. I am still looking for the marriage of Robert Daniel Mitchell to Elvina and Sally Mitchell to Jacob Spickard. Good luck in your search. Merilyn Finn
Marlyn When looking for a marriage in good old VA got to the county where the female resides and you will most likely find a bond, or permit with permission posting, then there is the 2nd potion of the so called Minister return. This is who did the marrying, it could be anywhere. Don Hill [email protected] wrote: To Anyone Who is Looking for Marriages in the Bedford Area:

Hi Leslie Ann - Do you know the parents of Rebecca Falls who married James Gray in this same family? Could they be sisters? I am descended from John Gray 1784-1855, who married Monroe Co., VA(WV) Susanna Thompson in 1816. They came to OH with her father and others in the Thompson family, arriving Union Co., OH ca 1817-20 time frame. I have a large genealogy on the Monroe Co. family also, but so far cannot connect my John. There is a possibility he connects to your family, but there were several Gray families in the SW corner of VA/WV I cannot connect, plus another larger group in Culpeper Co., and a branch of the Monroe Co. family who went to Guilford Co., NC, and a branch of that family came to Champaign Co., Union Co., & Hardin Co., OH where many of their descendants still reside. I will add your Samuel Henry to the Bedford Co. family. Good luck with your future research. John At 05:30 PM 7/27/2006, you wrote: >JOhn~ > >Thanks for your reply. JOhn~ Thanks for your reply. I have been in contact with LaMona just recently. My husband's great grandfather, Samuel Henry Gray was the son of "John" Richard Henry and Lucinda "Cindy" Falls Gray. I am having trouble locating any info on Lucinda. There was some speculation that she was the daughter of Daniel and Cynthia Falls, but I don't think so. I am just trying to place her in the correct family. The Maria Ellis listed as William Henry Gray's step-mother, was actually his step-grandmother. She was married to Sarah E. Ellis's father Richard Ellis. What Gray line do you descend from? Leslie Ann
Hello Leslie Ann - I show your Richard Henry Gray in a large genealogy sent me by LaMona Phillips back in Feb 2005. She does not show a continuation on him and neither do I. Richard Henry Gray, b. 20 Dec 1857 Bedford Co., VA. He is in the 1880 census for Chamblissburg, family #119, age 22, b. VA, farmer. Also in home is Mariah Ellis, age 61, b. VA, step-mother. From the genealogy it would appear she was the third wife of William H.. Richard Henry's mother was Sarah E. Ellis Gray. Father was William H. Gray, son of Austin, who was a son of John, who was a son of William. I show a Rebecca Falls who married James Gray, so there was a Falls family in the area. All I have. Greetings All ~ I was hoping that someone had access to the Bedford Co marriage register for 1870-1909 and could check to see if there is a marriage listed for Richard Henry Gray and Lucinda "Cindy" Falls about 1882. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Leslie Ann

Hi, While I was at the doctor's office today, I read the Aug. 2006 issue of Virginia Living and was pleasantly surprised to read an article about the Millstone Tearoom 1939 in Sedalia, Va. The article was titled Tearoom, Transformed. The tearoom was originally owned by Charles and Nellie Overstreet. It is owned now by Jared and Melanie Srsic. (I think that is right. I'm not sure of my spelling.) The millstone was used to grind White Lily flour. I am going to see if I can find a copy of the magazine in the stores. I and others are researching the five major Phelps lines in early Virginia, and would like to contact any descendants. Y-DNA male line testing will provide strong evidence as to whether these lines are related. The test by mail can be made private (I can explain further) and the Y_DNA is strictly "junk" dna and has no relationship to physical characteristics. A map of the approximate locations of these lines is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jamesphelpsresearch/va1850map.gif We very much want to find male descendants of the Phelps line in Bedford - or other early Phelps lines - if they are reasonably sure of their ancestry. The more certain you are the more the chance the other tested Phelps would pay for the test. I am the Phelps Project volunteer administrator. Our web site is at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Phelps/index.aspx Best regards, Doug Phelps [email protected]
LOL COUSIN I descend from the Lines of Humphrey De Bohun who is also married into the Randolph families in 1100 era of Scotland and England. run McElyea married to a Boone ( this is my Lines that come out of PA to what was Orange County Va. now it is Culppeper County Va. they moved into yep to Orange County NC. by 1760 era. They meet several times ( See the Long Bow Hunters) and most likely didn't even know they were Cousins. Also of Interest is What Do Daniel Boone, George Washington, John Quincy Adam, General George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, General James Randoph Robertson and Patrick Henry All have in Common. Answer Run the Lines Coming off the Plantagenet Families of William The Conquer of England, They are all Cousins. The Hawkins Lines are also a married Family coming off the Plantagent lines and also interconencted to the Randolph Families of Colonial Virginia as the are also De Bohun Clan of Scotland. The Hawkins Families are settled on a Drainage called Byrd Creek where 7 of my known Lines are living side by side in era of 1690 to 1730 Boone Family travel Patterns one Group goes into Maryland another settles in PA: The Maryland Boones as you say are Quakers. The PA Branch has the first Ordained Protestant Member of the Colonies in it. Squire Boone ( Great Gand Uncle to Daniel) is the First Baptist Minisiter of the AMERICAN Colonies. He is ordained in AMERICA thru the Philadelphia Baptist Assoc. He moved into Virginia and Spreads his lines into Northern Colonial Va. down to Orange Co. Va ( Now Culppeper Co. Va) Byrd Creek is also the home of a branch of my Hawkins Families where one William Eaton is found in Era of 1730. This Group moved into what is Nutbush Creek on the Mecklenburg County and Now Vance County NC Lines. THis is also the ones related to General James Randolph Robertson thu his wife Charlotte Reevs ( Rives Reaves) off the line Of Reverend George Rives of NC back to ?? Tony to kNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR IS TO KNOW YOUR KINSMAN General James RANDOLPH ROBERTSON is also a PLantagent Cousin, and a Boone Couisn and is off the Lines of William Hatcher Born 1613. HE came to rest in Indian Country in the State of Ten about 1818. Well He was the Indian Agent who owned lands on Barton's Creek, Right next to my brick wall of Hudson Johnson-Johnston and wife Agniss ( Agness) born 1740-1750. Several of the Quakers in MD were buried on Boone's plantation from Quaker Records in and around Anne Arundel and Baltimore cos MD. They all came together to the area. Miss Jeannie Maryland This established Time Line is an Exact match to the Families of the Reverend Tidence Lane who lead some of the First Families into Washington County NC about 1780 era, which is now area of Sullivan, Greene and Hawkins County Tn. Tidenece Lane was a Primitive Baptist Minister whose families came out of Maryland to the Yadkin Valley Settlements of North Carolina following the same travel Patterns is some of the De Bohun ( Boone Families) Suggest you just run the Surname Johnson thru Rootsweb then after you get 200 pages of information eliminate the surname Johnson in the section below ,and then put the basic information thru Rootsweb on a new Search no name but born Maryland 1760 plus or minus 20 years died in Hawkins County Tn. See who came with you on the same travel Pattern/ Yes this can be done also by changing places of Death to Bedford County and keeping Maryland in the engine. It will give you all the names of persons who have been researched that didn't make it on to the Counties of Hawkins County Tn which was formed from Lands of Washington Co NC, Washington Co. Va and from the Lost State of Franklin This can be used also to give you the names of those that caem from Maryland Born 1760 plus or minus 20 years that died in Wilkes County NC. again establishing a knon travel pattern. This can also be done by elminatating the Name Johnson and placing just in the place where it says DIED place the name of the Creek your family owned lands on. Tony Also if you KNOW WHAT CREEK your Families Lived on I can help you establish a TIME LINE FOR where these first Deeds on this Creek where Registered to and who was there first. It take a WHILE for me to do this, but I Will be willing to help as My Families are well tied to Bedford County. What a fantastic reply you gave. Thank you for the time and mental energy to give us this message. I have a family in that part of the country you refer to - and yes they did travel - and with family, although I cannot prove it yet, but registering and buying land on the same day & coming back up out of SC - for sure, and witnessing each others purchase, yet!. I wish I could type faster and more but I am down to one hand. I would like to correspond with others who were in that area, or arrived there in TSRO/Sullivan Co/Greene Co/ Washington Dist NC and SC/ Stateof Franklin/Wilkes Co NC/etc... Mine came about 1769. He last signed a petition in Baltimore MD in 1768. Again, it is a whole new ball game in that area! I know a lot of people lose it there, but after the war with the Feds paying in script on land others were already on, they left and went down to north of the Pacolet in SC and then abt 1800 they all came flooding back in mass. Really interesting. Jeanne

----- Original Message ----- From: Tony Johnson<mailto:[email protected]> To: P. Reams<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 16, 2006 11:13 PM Subject: Re: Hughes Family Campbell County Yes it makes it real hard to track someone from 1740 Virginia on as MANY County Line changes accorded not including the County Line changes but the State line changes with what we now now as North Carolina. This area of what we know as Campbell County was first settled in 1730 ( By Whites) but deeds are in Goochland County, in 1740 they are in Amelia County and Prince George, then again in Brunswick County and then to Halifax and Lunenburg County. Then to what I outlined for you. That is why it is so important to know who your neighbors are in 1820 tell 1865 as this is YOUR FAMILY CLAN. These families were CLAN orintated tell after the War between the States. They moved as a Family Clan from Place to Place. The neighbors in this time era is a cousin from one to three generations off your main lines. The neighbor is most likely a Brother or Sister to your Grandmother or Grandfather. Has any one in your Research of the Hughes family ever done a DNA Test, wow this opens up so much more information on where you lines were at and WHO they were intermarried too. Tony L. Johnson descended from Hudson Johnson-Johnston of Buffalo Creek Henry Co. Va 1776-1780, then on to What was then Washington County NC in 1782, which was part of the State of Franklin < then once Tennessee declared Statehood, it became Greene County Tn, then in a few years becomes Sullivan Co. Tn then in days it become Hawkins County Tn. where y Hudson Johnston's lands can be located today. In 1800 he moved to what was then Williamson County Tn. In 1803 he buys lands on Barton's Creek of what was then Stewart County Tn by the time he arrives the County is know Dickson County Tn, where this land is found Today. Hudson Johnson's DNA Family is on Tuckahoe Creek drainage in Henrico Co Va. in 1690 as are 7 of the other Lines that I descend from. Now several other things that researchers Miss is the DATE when a person filed a Deed. Go back and check the Date of the Deeds filled by your Hughes Family in Tn. WHO ELSE Filed Deeds on that Day, as this is who your Family traveled with to get to where they where. Now another Thing is FAMILY FOLLOWED FAMILY to the new Lands, who was the first Folks on the lands- Creeks that your Hughes family were on in Tn. They heard about this NEW LANDS from the Family that went there first. The First CHURCH on the Creek is also a precious Clue as these families also are widely associated with the First Minister that brought the folks to these regions, where did this minister come from. By 1820 the deeds for Buffalo Creek are in Campbell County. So the County lines changed numerous times on the lands that were and are on Buffalo Creek. So if you are Looking for information on he Hughes Families of Campbell County you are going to have to research in each one of these Counties. My Interest is in one William Johnson who in 1780 Henry County one Hudson Johnson lived with him. Per 1782 and 1785 Tithes ( tax Lists) William Johnson's neighbor was Blackmore Huhes of Buffaloe Creek and one Rowland Chiles. My DNA is a match to those researching the lines of Michael Johnson who died in 1718 Henrico Co. Va. There is a Hughes Family in the descendants of Michael Johnson.
