    1. Patrick County Genealogy Society Meeting on the Cherokee Indians
    2. Alpha Hiatt
    3. This is a reminder of our meeting this Tuesday night on the General History & Culture of the Cherokee, and Genealogy by Dr. R. Michael Abram. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Stuart Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Stuart. The Church is located on Blue Ridge Street across from the historic Patrick County Courthouse. Dr. R. Michael Abram is the Director of the Cherokee Heritage Museum and Gallery in Cherokee, NC and he will be speaking on the General History & Culture of the Cherokee, and Genealogy. The Cherokee owned all the land on top of the Blue Ridge including Vesta, Meadows of Dan, and Tuggles Gap. The Cherokee were also at Fairystone Park. Many people in both Patrick and Floyd Counties are descended from the Cherokee. This is an opportunity to learn how to research your Cherokee ancestry and learn about their way of life. This program is especially suitable for children, so you're welcome to bring your families to this program. This makes the 10th Native American program that the Patrick County Genealogy Society has hosted since our inception in 1999. The program will be 2 hours long beginning at 6:00 p.m. The first part of the program will be on the General History (Clothing, Food, Clans, Trail of Tears, Baskets, Pottery, etc.) & Culture of the Cherokee. The 2nd hour will be on the Genealogy. There will be a break in between both sessions. We did this so that our school children can attend the program and still get home in time to do their homework. We look forward to seeing you on August 15th. Alpha Hiatt, Vice President Patrick County Genealogy Society __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! He was a widower when he remarried in 1822 to Mary Smith, who I believe is related to the Nathaniel Smith who was an important figure in the area. 1. Website: VA Adds Maps to Online Gravesite Locator
    2. Paula Ward
    3. Veterans Administration Adds Maps to Online Gravesite Locator WASHINGTON - The grave locations of more than three million veterans and dependents buried in national cemeteries can be found more easily now because the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has added maps of burial sections online that can be printed from home computers and at national cemetery kiosks. The latest improvement builds upon a service begun two years ago, in which a VA online feature permits family members to find the cemetery in which their loved one is buried. The gravesite locator http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov, online since April 2004, helps veterans' families, former comrades-in-arms and others find the cemeteries where veterans are buried. With the new online feature, people enter a veteran's name to search, click on the "Buried At" (burial location) link and a map of the national cemetery is displayed, showing the section where the grave is located. In a related development, VA recently added to its database the cemeteries in which 1.9 million veterans were buried with VA grave markers. These are mostly private cemeteries. This addition brings the number of graves recorded in the locator to approximately five million. Those with maps are in VA national cemeteries and in state veterans cemeteries and Arlington National Cemetery if burials were since 1999. Beyond the five million records now available, VA continues to add approximately 1,000 new records to the database each day. VA also plans to add to its online database the exact locations of veterans' gravesites in the remaining state veterans' cemeteries. 2. I am looking for parents, siblings and children of Job Martin who was married to Elizabeth Huddleston.. I have a copy of papers from his Revolutionary Pension files. In an Kanawha county VA (now WV) affidavit he states "born on the 11th of April 1753 - am a native of Pennsylvania, but arrived to Bedford County Va in my 17 the year of age. In March 1776 I enlisted in Bedford county under Capt Henry Terrill for two years. Job Martin died 1839 in Kanawha County, VA (now WV). He married Elizabeth Huddleston - does anyone know when or where? She is named in Job's will and in her father's will. In Bedford County, VA I find following marriages - _http://www.rootsweb.com/~vabedfor/bedf-m_m.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~vabedfor/bedf-m_m.htm) Job Martin came to Bedford County, VA in 1770. Mar. 27, 1809; Job Martin & Mary Turner; James Turner, Surety; Married by John Ayers, March 30, 1809. (I do not think this is the Job Martin I am looking for.) Thanks, Kathie New Jersey

Could they be sisters? I am descended from John Gray 1784-1855, who married Monroe Co., VA(WV) Susanna Thompson in 1816. They came to OH with her father and others in the Thompson family, arriving Union Co., OH ca 1817-20 time frame. I have a large genealogy on the Monroe Co. family also, but so far cannot connect my John. There is a possibility he connects to your family, but there were several Gray families in the SW corner of VA/WV I cannot connect, plus another larger group in Culpeper Co., and a branch of the Monroe Co. family who went to Guilford Co., NC, and a branch of that family came to Champaign Co., Union Co., & Hardin Co., OH where many of their descendants still reside. I will add your Samuel Henry to the Bedford Co. family. Good luck with your future research. John At 05:30 PM 7/27/2006, you wrote: >JOhn~ > >Thanks for your reply. 1. Re: [VABEDFOR] Bedford Co. (VA) Marriage Register, V. 2 (1870-1909)
    2. Don, When you are using the marriage index at the Library of Virginia, you will find the two people and the date of their marriage. Beside this you will then find the county where they are married. You must then go to the particular county where they married and look up this information. As I said before, for my great grandparents, it was Botetourt County. When looking at the Botetourt County records, you would find their marriage license or bond. Also on the index for the particular county who was the minister that married them. So you really have three pieces of information: 1. the general index for the state 2. the index for the particular county 3. the copy of the actual bond or license. The ministers return would be on the index for the particular county. I hope this helps. Merilyn Finn
