Nancy, the Stephenson file that I have for James and Ann Garner has a Joseph but he is too old for your Joseph. Guess your Joseph would be of the next generation IF he descends from this James. The only thing I can tell you is that James and David, sons of James, did NOT have a son named Joseph. What about these other people HEADS OF FAMILIES AT THE FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES TAKEN IN THE YEAR 1790 RECORDS OF THE STATE ENUMERATIONS: 1782 TO 1785 VIRGINIA HEADS OF FAMILIES----VIRGINIA, 1782. Thanks to those of you who haver responded to my note. James & Ann (Garner) did have a son named Joseph and one named Thomas. Neither of these two have had any line developed to my knowledge. It is possible that they are the "two younger brothers who died young" according to a family member interviewed in a Jackson Co OH newspaper. Many people assume they never married. BUT, there has never been any proof for that as far as I have learned. I found a marriage for a Joseph Stevenson/Stephenson & .Susanna McClure in Rockbridge Co VA in 1796. I've tried to find this Susanna McClure line and have not succeeded. Rockbridge was cut out of Augusta Co in 1794 and James & his son Robert were counted in Rockbridge in List of Tithables in Rockbridge in 1778 along with two Josephs.. I also found a marriage in Jackson Co OH in 1818 for a Joseph Stephenson to Elizabeth Bowen. All the other Stephenson/Stevenson marriages at that timespan in Jakson Co are either children or grandchildren for James and Ann. Therefore, there is a possiblilty that the son named Joseph did in fact live and marry in Rockbridge in 1796 and perhaps remarried in 1818 in Jackson Co OH. Since my Joseph was born 1810/1811 in VA, he could fit here. My Joseph Stephenson named his first son James/Joseph. Perhaps this would be a clue as to his father's name. Darn those Scotch-Irish, they all use the same given names to their children! Thanks again for the response, Nancy Stephenson Guenther
