Joy, The first thing I would do before I ever went to Augusta County is look at the following web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/ These books are abstracts from the court records of Augusta County wirrten by the then Clerk and include deeds, marriages, wills. I believe at the end of each volume (there are three all online) there is a name index. I wasfortunate to purchase the three volumes in 1985 for $75, and I tell you my copiies are almost worn out I have used them so much. You will find book numbers and then page numbers for deeds and wills, plus other things. Then you can go to Augusta County and be prepared. Of course, if you have enough time before, you can check for LDS films for the deed books and look them up yourself. Depending on your surname(s) that you are studying, that might include a lot of deeds. The people at the courthouse were very nice when I was there a number of years ago. I don't remember if they have a reading room with copy machnes. I would think they do. Anyway, have a great time and enjoy the scenery. The one thing I kept thinking when we were driving down Skyline Drive was "how did these people ever make it out of Virginia?" The mountains are roll upon roll over the horizon. It was really spectacular. But do check out Chalkley's.
