    1. Chalkley help needed
    2. Need help from experienced users of Chalkley's "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia". Need to identify the right court & meaning of some of the references. In vol II (http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/volume_2/contents.htm) about page 52, begins a subsection titled "CIRCUIT COURT CAUSES ENDED." Entries from then on often begin like this: Lowry vs. Erwin--Causes ended. Old number 444 N. S., 165. Erwin vs. Baxter--Causes ended--O. S., 444; N. S., 165. James Erwin vs. Allen Diver--O. S. 249; N. S. 87 [Most are like this one above.] [The one I'm most interested in:] Barnett vs. Helm--O. S. 153; N. S. 54--Bill, 27th March, 1806. From Berkeley County. [Does this mean it's from a Berkeley Co VA court? There are a few others that say "from Frederick".] This style continues until about p 263, when a new section begins: RECORD BOOKS IN CIRCUIT COURT OFFICE. BOOK MARKED "RECORDS." The first record here begins: Page 67--Superior Court for District composed of Counties of Augusta, Bath, Rockbridge and Rockingham, 12th September, 1808. What do the OS, NS numbers mean, and from which court or courts did Chalkley extract? Are the book's court records drawn from other courts than the Superior Court mentioned above? I need to determine the right jurisdiction for the "Barnett vs Helm" case. Augusta Co doesn't make a lot of sense for the parties involved (altho it's not completely out of the question). See also http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~onthebullskin/Families/Helm/BarnettvsHelm.txt Any advice appreciated. Thanks, ==mwh Michael Helm Richmond CA

    3. I had a letter once from a member of the staff at the Library of Virginia. She explained that O.S. and N.S. meant old style and new style. She also said that the court causes ended are available at the Library of Virginia and you must write and ask about them. I never did, but if I did, I would write the information that was found in Chalkley's and see what can be done. Let me know what happened. I just haven't done it because there was so much else going on. The following website explains the different courts in Virginia and when they were in existence: http://www.segenealogy.com/virginia/va_records/court.htm There is a chapter on court records in "Source" by Lorretto Szucs and Sandy Luebking. not necessarily just covering Virginia. Another book you might want to look into is "Virginia Genealogy" by Carol McGinnis, published by Genealogical Publishing Company in 1993. Hope this helps.
