do you speak of Thomas Pogue Campbell? Peggy
I'm looking for information on Valentine Jones, my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather. He was on the 1777 Augusta County Militia list in Captain Young's Company. He served in Capt. James Bell's Company, Augusta Co, VA, in the Revolutionary War. Valentine had one known brother, Berryman, who substituted for Valentine later in the war. Their father may have been John Jones, who was listed with them on several tax lists. If you know anything about this family, please contact me. Thank you. Kathy Jones-Kristof
Kathy, I don't have any info on your Valentine Jones, but I do have a Valentine Jones that married a Lucinda Hopkins in Hancock co, Tn. From his tombstone: Valentine Jones b 1867, died 1909. I have tried to trace him but no luck. He doesn't seem to belong to any of the other Jones families that settled in Hawkins/Hancock co, Tn. Could he have been named for his grandfather? Do you have any info on any part of your Jones line that may have settled in this area? Margaret, I don't know of any Tennessee connection, but there is one in Kentucky. Or at least a possible one. Ambrose Jones, who may have been a brother of Valentine and Berryman, moved from Greenbrier County, where they had both settled, to Kentucky and had a family. He could have had kids who moved onto Tennessee. Below is the little that I know about him, in case you can make a connection. If you do, please let me know. Ambrose Jones came to Kentucky from Greenbrier Co, VA about 1788 and settled in Morgan Co at the mouth of Jones Creek, which is named after him. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1811 and was a member of the South Fork Baptist Church in Malone, Morgan Co. He was one of the preachers who established the Burning Springs Association in 1813. Ambrose Jones died June 12, 1833. Sons and daughters of the Revolutionary soldier and his wife, Martha Craig Jones, were William Jones, born October 23, 1785; Priscilla Jones, born February 18, 1787, married Isaac Nickell; Nancy Jones, born March 17, 1790, married a Ferguson; Richard Jones, born June 8, 1795; Jenny Jones, born May 3, 1792; Barbary Jones, born April 19, 1797, married John Howerton; Sinthy Jones, born June 12, 1799, married Uriah Cottle; James Jones, born October 24, 1807, married Lucinda ?; John Jones, born November 24, 1793, married twice, secondly to Sallie Cole. Good luck with your research! Kathy Jones-Kristof
