Marjorie is correct. I hope no one expends too much effort trying to track down records in Illinois prior to 3 Dec 1818, when it became a state and was admitted to the Union. The Territory of Illinois was created by an act of congress in 1809. By territory, I mean wilderness; then known as Illinwek. Previous to this, what we now know as IL belonged to the Commonwealth of Virginia, whose border stretched to present day western Wisconsin. This area was controlled by the French from 1675 until 1763, being reached by the French Jesuit missionaries, Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet on 20 Jan 1673. The British had a short speight in here towards the end of European control, just. previous to Virginia's accession. So, the county of Hugh Caperton's birth would have been Orange Co, VA, since Augusta was not formed from it until 1778. Marjorie wrote: > Daniel, In 1757, there was no Mattoon nor Coles Co. Illinois.
