    3. John, What time period do you have your James Thompson in Albemarle County? What area do you have the Captain James Thompson? William and Mary Thompson had son James who was a Captain. Always interested in all these Thompsons since I have two Thompson lines in the same area. 3. Hi Gay: My James Thompson was born 28 Jun 1759 in VA and died 14 Dec 1843 in Union Co., OH. He married Senior Temperance 'Tempe' (Mooney) 8 Jul 1783 in Northampton Parish, Louisa Co., VA. After her death he married Elizabeth Lazenbee in Union Co., OH. I believe James is the son of John Thompson, b. ca 1741 and Mary Berry. John baptized 20 Oct 1741 at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, VA, and Mary baptized 19 Aug 1744 same place. I believe James was the son of George Thompson, who married Mary Pollard. George was a Constable 18 Jun1749 per a tax record in Northampton Parish, Goochland Co., VA. C.J. Emmons, the genealogist on our line, published his research in 'Some Descendants of the Revoluitionary War Soldier James Thompson' in which he says, and I quote: "According to family tradition, James was born near London, England and nothing is known of his parents. This does not agree with the history of Union Co., OH which says James was born in VA. His father, whose name was John, came to America before the French and Indian War and died in Virginia. James is said to be the only son. In his application for pension James states that in 1780 his home was in Amherst Co., VA. His father John lived there also. Several John Thompson's are found in VA during the years 1740-1800. A John Thompson of Amherst and Albermarle Counties signed a Religious Dissenters Petition in 1776. James was a Rev. War veteran, Private in Capt. Garland Burnley's Company of Col Francis Taylor's 6th Regiment of the VA line, also called a guard unit because they spent a lot of time guarding prisioners. Service is documented in both Amherst Co., and Albermarle Barracks. (Thanks to my correspondent Danee Crouch, I have a copy of 'Amherst County, Virginia in the Revolution.' In this work are extracts from the 'Lost Order' Book 1773-1782' by Lenora Higginbotham Sweeny, 1951, p 171 - Rev. War Soldiers who claimed pensions: 'Thompson, James of Union Co., OH, June 28, 1833, aged 73, enlisted Amherst Co., VA 1777 as a substitute; by occupation a weaver, private under Capt. G. Burley, Col. Francis Taylor, Major Roberts, Albermarle Barracks, next tour drafted and marched against Cornwallis at Petersburg. Claim for pension is allowed.')" I put James Thompson and family in or near Monroe Co., WVA because my gt.gt. gd.fa. John Gray married James' daughter Susannah there in 1816. I found a marriage record for James and Tempe dated 8 July 1783 in Louisa Co., VA. We know James' son John lived in or near Charlottesville. The Mormon IGI says the mc for them is on file at Richmond, VA (IGI batch 7203503, sheet 6, batch M504881; batch 7104924, sheet 42.) This is about all I have. Do we connect? 3. There were at least 2 James Thompsons in Greenbrier/Monroe Co. Capt. James gave up his post as he was leaving the area. I can't remember the date but believe it was prior to 1800. The other James married Sarah Kincaid 6 Feb. 1796. She is most likely the daughter of John & Ann Graham Kincaid. This couple can be traced from around the Union area to Anthony Creek to Muddy Creek. I am wondering how John Gray relates to the James Gray who married 29 Dec. 1793 Kitty Kincaid, dau. of Thomas & Mary Kincaid of Turkey Creek, Grbr./Monroe Co.? I believe this is Danne's line. 3. Hello Sue - Thank you for thinking of me. This land transaction took place 4 years after my John was born, so it cannot be my man who purchased this land. And yes, I have established that the James Thompson whose wife was Rebecca, is not the same as my James Thompson, whose only wife was Temperance 'Tempe' (Mooney.). The John Gray being referenced here is at least one generation earlier than my man. Thanks anyway.
