Sue, I have a sister of my ancestor who married a John Kinkead in Fayette County in 1790. Her name was Mary or Polly Thompson and her parents were Joseph Thompson and I believe Mary Gibson. I also believe that the Thompsons came from Augusta County about 1789. I do not know who the parents of this John Kinkead were. Perhaps he was one of the children that you mentioned showing up in Jessamine/Woodford County. Of course, Jessamine was formed from Fayette County in 1798. My ancestor was William G. Thompson who was a brother of the above Mary/Polly. Any thoughts on the connection? Bob Thompson Prior Lake, MN
Bob, In my database I have the following notes. I know they are long, but I think all of them are needed to explain the situation: In 1855, Alice submitted depositions to the United States Govenment, applyng for a pension as a widow of John Kincaid, soldier in the Revolutionary War. (See below) Their marriage is established in depositions dated 6 June 1842 . There are discrepancies as far as her age is concerned. She says she is 72 years old in 1842, which would make birth year 1740 and on 15 October 1855, she states she is 89 years old which would make the year 1766. This has to be approached from other angles. The photocopy of the document dated 6 June 1842 is extremely faint and hard to read, but in it she states that she is the widow of John Kinciad, a private in the war, that they were married in the County of Botetourt, and that he died on the 11 day of August 1833 and that she has remained a widow. The other document is easier to read: State of Virginia County of Alleghany On this 15th day of October, A.D. one thousand eight hundred & fifty five, personally appeared before me, a justice of the peace within & for the county & state aforesaid, Alice Kincaid, aged eighty nine years, a resident of Jackson's River, Alleghany County, in the state of Virginia, who being duly sworn according to law, declared that she is the widow or John Kincaid deceased, who was a soldier (in the Revolution) in the company commanded by Captain___ in the __Regiment of ___ commanded by ___ in the war of the Revolution that he said husband was a Revolutionary pensioner and she refers to his application for a pension, on file in the War Department, for an account of his services, as she cannot state whether her husband was drafted, enlisted or volunteered or the time or amount of services, but is satisfied he served more than 14 day in said War. She further refers to her own application for her pension, on file as aforesaid, for proof, that she is a pensioner--that she was married to the said John Kincaid and that she is now a widow. She further states that he was married to the said John Kincaid, in the county of Bath (SCRATCHED OUT AND Botetourt written in), state of Virginia, on the --- day of ___ A.D. by one ___ Alderson, a Presbyterian minister & that her name before her said marriage was Alice Dean, that her said husband died at her present place of residence, on the ___ date of ___ A.D., 1835 & that she is now a widow. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which she may be entitled under the act approved March 3, 1855. her Alice X Kincaid mark We, Thomas Mayes and Alexander Kincaid residents of Jacksons River County of Alleghany, in the state of Virginia upon our oaths declare that the foregoing declaration was signed and acknowledged by Alice Kincaid in our presence & that we believe, from the appearance of the statements of the applicant that she is the identical person she represents herself to be. We further state that John Kincaid dec'd & the said Alice Kincaid long resided together as husband & wife that they were reputed as such that the said John Kincaid is dead & and that the applicant is till a widow. Thomas Mayes Alexander M. Kincaid TODO: Try to find these service records. The file goes on to describe several tours of duty that John Kincaid served in state regiments, one commanded by Alexander Handly, volunteered to serve under Captain John Bollar, served under Colonel Thomas Preston and Major John Rowland, which joined the Main Army under the Command of General Green. These enlistments and services should be on record at the Library of Virginia. Where does Alcey or Ally Elliott fit into all of this? Within the same pension file is a statement of a marriage between her and John Kincaid by the Rev. Edward Crawford on 25 December 1787 in Botetourt County and is certified by the clerk of court of that county!!! The pension files of John Kincaid of Fayette Co., Virginia and John Kincaid of Alleghany County were mixed up at one time and John of Fayette was withdrawn from the pension rolls and later reinstated. I believe that Alcey Elliott was this John's wife and should have been in the reconstructed files for John of Fayette MARRIAGE:Family established by Chalkley v. 2, page 156-157 (O.S. 190; N.S. 67 Bill-July 1812) WILL: (John Dean) Chalkley Chronicles, v.2, page 245-246 (O.S. 342; N.S. 12 Bill-Aug.1812) FHC#30731, 30732. (Al;so have call no. 975-584v2v listed--don't know what that refers to.) TODO: Look for marriages of children in Alleghany Co., VA and any other material, including censuses. Was Mary's name Mary Alice and she went by the name of Alcy or is this another wife, or is this another John altogether. The latter has happened many times with the Kincaids where the same first name is found for several men in one county.
