Well, I think there are Illinois records available prior to 1818. It just depends on what boundary the area falls under *now*. The land covering Illinois wasn't under U.S. control until 1778 when it was captured from the British. Virginia then laid claim to the area covering and including Illinois and ceded it to the U.S. Government in 1784. The Northwest Territory was created from this in 1787 and it included present-day Illinois. It was further carved and shaped in 1800 when the Indiana Territory was created, and it included present-day Illinois. In 1809, the Illinois Territory was created with the capital as Kaskaskia. Then, in 1818, it was admitted as a state. So, depending on the year during the timeline, you might be able to find records for Illinois in these other areas. Not to say that anyone is "wrong", but to say that someone was born in Illinois prior to even 1778 is bordering upon the impossible. The French did own it until 1763 when they ceded it to the British after the French and Indian War, and then the British had it until 1778 when it was captured by the Americans. So, a 1757 birth year for Hugh Caperton was likely in an area known then as Augusta County, Virginia, but I wouldn't think it was in the present-day area of Illinois. Again, hope that's helpful to someone ....
