    3. So many of the early Augusta families are inter-related, studying one means studying all. In the Patton family, John & James Patton appear in Lancastor Co. PA by 1730. One source I found says that Col. James Patton didn't actually move to the Colonies until 1738. However, there is a James Patton listed on the 1735 Londonderry, Chester Co. PA tax list. As far as I can understand. Margaret Lynn Lewis b 1693 Co. Donegal, Ireland d 1773 Augusta Co, Va. Her parents were Wm Lynn (1672-1727) and Margaret Patton (b 1676) who was was the daughter of John Patton (b 1630) and Nancy Neely. John Patton was the son of William Patton (b 1590 Scotland) who fled to Co. Donegal in 1642. John had a brother Henry whose son Henry (b 1661) m Sarah Lynn. (This Henry may have been the brother of Margaret rather than the cousin). Henry was in the shipping business, with several trips between Ireland and the Colonies. He is the father of Thomas, John, Thomas, John, Col. James and Elizabeth Preston. The Woods family came from Lancastor Co. PA to Albemarle Co. They brought with them friends and relatives. They settled near Rockfish Gap. This is the pass the present hwy from Charlotte to Staunton goes through. There was a great deal of movement between Rockfish Gap and surrounding Alb. Co. areas and Beverly Manor/Borden's track. So much so that the area must be considered as a whole. The Lewis family was also connected to the Calhoun family, which was connected to the Hamiltons. The Kincaids show up in Alb. Co. next to the Woods family at about the same time. They also show up on the Great Calfpasture. The 4 eldest Kincaids in Alb. Co. were David (Winnefred Hobson Tillery), James (Jean), Joseph and John. David moved with his family and the Logans to Wash. Co. VA. His son Joseph shows up in TN, his son John's family went to Clark Co. KY. James & Joseph died in Alb. Co. Joseph's son John also moved to Wash Co. VA but then to Madison CO. KY and later some went to MO. I believe James' son Thomas ends up in Greenbrier Co. near Union. I believe (others disagree) John to have been the "John the Weaver" who bought land on the Great Calfpasture. His children seem to appear in Woodford/Jessamine Co. KY. My ancestor Andrew Kincaid (d 1810 Grbr. Co.) has not been successfully tied to a parent. 3. I'm curious about how Rockfish Gap contributed to early migration and settlement in Augusta County. I've seen a few Augusta County deeds in Chalkley in which the purchasers were from Albemarle County. 1. What percentage of these folks originally came up the Shenandoah Valley from, say, Pennsylvania, then crossed over Rockfish Gap and settled in Albemarle before moving back to Augusta County? That is how I interpret the movement of the Woods family from Lancaster County, for example. 2. What percentage of early settlers came first to Albemarle County via coastal Virginia and then passed through Rockfish Gap to settle in Augusta County? Weren't these more likely to have been English rather than Scotch-Irish? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sue/Alex" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2004 10:26 AM Subject: [VAAUGUST] Kincaid-Woods-Patton-Lewis etc. ... > The Woods family came from Lancastor Co. 3. I suspect that the most prevelent influx from the coast didn't make it into the Valley, though there are definate exceptions. Most of the early Augusta residents were Scotch-Irish or German by way of PA. I do believe that some of the Patton shipping was devoted to populate the large Patton-Lewis grants in Augusta. These grants required a certain amount of settlement for valadation. There were agents in N. Ireland that recruited emigrants. I had the opportunity to travel through Rockfish Gap many years ago. There is a gentle slope leading to it from the east. You top the Gap and the whole Staunton Valley spreads before you. It is gorgeous. The distance between the Gap and Staunton is not great, which accounts for the relationship between those areas.
