I used to live in Arlington and spent a lot of time researching in DC area. Call the DAR and ask for the time they open. When I was there they charged $5 per day, if you were not a member. I took the Metro and walked the few blocks. I also took a lunch and ate in the park across the street. Make sure that they stamp your hand or whatever to not have to pay the $5. again. All of the people there are very helpful and there are many many books that most other libraries do not have. They had a maximum of pages that they would copy in a day so ask about that too.
