Sue: Your comments on Chalkey's work were excellent. It is tiring to hear everyone pile on when there is a problem observed and even more so to hear complains about those who add to the conversation with their observations that are congruent with the cited problem. Obviously the subject needed airing and your rational was exactly what was needed. James McCulloch Ann Arbor, Michigan
I'm researching Armstrong's of Augusta County. There are way too many of them and I can't keep them straight. Anyone else searching this surname in Augusta County?
Ronda; My wife was an Armstrong, originally from western Augusta County. Her heritage goes back to Robert Armstrong, an immigrant from Northern Ireland that was a Sergeant in the French and Indian War. Robert married Jane Vanarsdale in 1746. She has the family tree down to the current or latest date. Contact me off the list at bharris@ntelos.net and I will share information with you. Lynden, A Robert Armstrong brought over a Owen Kelly as a indentured servant for four years. Owen came to Pennsylvania 7th of June 1773 and was ported from Dublin Ireland. Resident of Augusta Co, Va. I am researching James Kelly who came to America in 1773 also, and lived in the Greenbrier County area of Virginia. I do not know who this Owen Kelly is, have you ran across any Kelly's in your research? Owen had a land grant in 1795 in Augusta County three hundred and seventy acres on the N.W. side of Nap's creek, a branch of the Greenbrier River adjoining Michael Dougherty. James Kelly was born August 1756 in Ireland and married Nancy Caperton in 1782. How did people get to be indentured in the first place, were they known by the party who brought them over, were they kin in someway? Lyndon; I like that name!! Apparently we are looking at two different Armstrong's. Our Robert Armstrong was in the Beverly Track Of Orange County (living in the area of what is Doe Hill of Highland County today of what would be Augusta County in 1745. He was married in 1746 and never left the "Highland and Bath" County areas. As far as James Kelly goes, all I can find is: Henry Begley vs. James Kelly.--From Hampshire County. Attachment, 12th March, 1765. Samuel Dew, Deputy Sheriff. Henry swears, 15th June, 1769, before Jonathan Heath, that James is removed out of the Colony. Do you show James Kelly deceased by 1778? Did he have a daughter Catherine? Below is a synopsis of a court case in 17787 Sept 15, 1778 (358) Catherine Kelly, orphan of James Kelly, to be bound to Dennis Callahan (425) Catharine Kelly, orphan, to be bound to Robert Burns, vice Dennis Callachan. MARCH 21, 1791. (432) Mathews vs. Isabella Burns, executrix of Robert Burns, James Curry, and Mary, his wife, Asher Waterman, and Sarah, his wife, and Margaret Cunningham Burns, infant--Chancery. I did not follow up any further. Looks like everyone is passing on. If you need anything from the Burns court records, let me know but I will not search farther at this time. Owen did have a land grant in 1795 in that area that would become West Virginia today. I believe that I descend from this same Robert Armstrong but I do not have concrete solid proof yet. I have more proof for William Able Armstrong descending from this Robert Armstrong. I believe this William Able Armstrong and my John Armstrong are brothers. They married Parrett sisters.
