    1. [VAAUGUST] Thomas C. HARLOW & Caroline DAVIS (roughly 1820ish births)
    2. Hello List! I new to this list, but not a new researcher. My Augusta Co. ancestor is Thomas Clark HARLOW. Thomas Clark HARLOW: b. 1815ish? -1828ish Louisa Co., VA d. 4/20/1894 Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH buried: Dayton Natl Cemetery military: 1st WV Calvary, Civil War, Union ----enlisted 8/30/1861 Parkersburg, Wood Co., WV ----reenlisted 12/23/1863 New Creek, WV known residences: -----Louisa Co., VA -----Orange Co., VA -----Augusta Co., WV -----Kanawha Co., WV -----Lewis Co., WV -----Wood Co., WV -----Mineral Co., WV -----Washington Co., OH -----Athens Co., OH -----Montgomery Co., OH spouse 1: Caroline DAVIS* marriage 1: unknown but before 1850 children from marriage 1: 4-5 spouse 2: Martha Jane SKINNER marriage 2: 1864 Washington Co., OH children from marriage 2: eight spouse 3: Isabella C. BURDETT (nee MILAM) marriage 3: 1867 Wood Co., WV children from marriage 3: none known In Augusta, Thomas shows up in the 1850 census with possibly his 2nd wife*, Caroline, who I have learned was Caroline DAVIS. 1850 census Dist. 2-1/2 Augusta Co., VA / roll M432 934 HARLOW, THOMAS age 25 <1825> born VA ---CAROLINE age 24 <1826> born VA ---LUCY M. age 8 <1842> born VA ---SARAH A. age 6 <1844> born VA ---WILLIAM J. age 4 <1846> born VA ---MARY J. age 1 <1849> born VA There was another son, Thomas S. HARLOW born roughly 1861 after this census. In 1860, this family was scattered among other families & Thomas can be found in WV. The Thomas HARLOW in that 1850 census was born in Louisa Co., VA. He is definitely may ancestor & I would be happy to provide my sources to the list. The son. William J. HARLOW in this 1850 census was born in Orange Co., VA. He served in the VA Infantry & then settled in Washington Co., OH where father, Thomas Clark HARLOW was living. Then he followed his father to Athens Co., OH in 1870 & again followed (or visa versa) his father back to Washington Co., OH in 1880. They lived next door to each other in 1870 & 1880. Records show that William James HARLOW's parents were Thomas Clark HARLOW & Caroline DAVIS & that William J. was born in Orange Co., VA. My questions: 1) Was this the same Thomas C. HARLOW b. 1815 Louisa Co., VA, who married the widow, Lucy HUMPHREY in 1840 Louisa Co., VA?* If so, then he had 4 wives. 2) Who was Caroline DAVIS? Was this her maiden name or was Caroline married before? 3) Was the Lucy P. HARLOW in this 1850 census the daughter of Thomas C. HARLOW & Lucy HUMPHREY? 4) Did Caroline think that Thomas was dead or did they divorce? ----Not a crazy as you think. This appears to be what happened with the marriage to Martha Jane SKINNER. Then, the 8 children was scattered in other homes or in the Athens Co., Infirmary. Wife Martha Jane is a widow in the 1880 census. 5) Did Lucy HUMPHREY die before Thomas married Lucy or were they divorced? There is an age discrepancy between Thomas C. HARLOW b. 1815 Louisa Co., VA who married Lucy HUMPHREY. I know for sure that the Thomas in this 1850 census is my Thomas who started claiming to be younger (b. 1828) while or before he married an 18 year old woman, Martha Jane SKINNER. From that point on, he was living by a birth year of 1828 - or at least this is my theory backed up with censuses starting in 1860. Would love any scrap of a lead out there & happy to share my sources. Best Wishes, Donna ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
