Hello, Does anyone know of a Jesse Wood(s) who married Nancy Puckett Sept. 19, 1819 in Nelson Co. VA and died ca. 1842? Once of their sons James Wood(s) later moved through Rockingham Co., Floyd Co, before settling in Giles Co. He married Minerva Aliff in 1858. Thanks for your help, Mary -----Original Message----- From: vaaugust-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vaaugust-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue Liedtke Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 6:44 PM To: vaaugust@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VAAUGUST] Woods Family Michael Woods was the patriarch of this family. If I may jump in on this discussion about the Woods family. My 5G grandmother, Mary "Ann" Woods was born in 1756 or 1757 according to her gravestone (which I saw) and the "History of Armstrong County PA page 559. I found a birth date of 9 Dec 1757 in Drummondville, Midlothian Co, Scot on the IGI but don't have any proof that it was her birth. She used the name Ann in the docs I have located about her including tax lists, census and her will. She married Andrew Sharp in April 1783 in Cumberland Co PA according to a letter written by her daughter in which she described her father Andrew's death by Indians as they floated down the river on a houseboat. I found Andrew and 3 of his siblings' baptism records on film from Cambelltown, Co Argyl Scotland. Some county histories mistakenly say he was born in PA. Handwritten motes on the families held by the Indiana Co Hist & Gen Soc list the following 3 names which appear to be alternate father & grdfa of Mary Ann. "Ann Woods (1757/1809) m Capt Andrew Sharp; Michael Woods Jr (1708/1777) m Ann Lambert; Michael Woods, Sr (1684/1962?? did he mean 1762?) m Mary Campbell Also lists Mary Campbell as d 1762." Writer did not leave any documentation. I know she had a brother, John, as his will in 1812 names her but I haven't seen the will myself. Ann's Will Dated 9-15-1808 Proven 6-27-1809: Children: Hannah Leason, Agnes Ralston, THOMAS, Margaret, Joseph, Ann. Brother John Woods (bequest fr his estate); Exec: Thomas Sharp, Son Joseph Sharp; Wit Benj Walker, John Walker "late Armstrong Twp p 12 #15" ("Index to Indiana Co Wills Bk #1, p12, Wills probated 1807-1850) There is a John Woods 1790 C Northumberland Co: M 1(16+); F 5. Is this her brother?? Will for James Sharp (brother of my Andrew) 1812 names a David H Woods & a John Woods as Witnesses, Cumberland Co PA Please note that I have the date of 1812 also for the Will of Ann Sharp's brother John Woods. "Hist of Cumberland & Adams Cos PA" 1886 lists a Samuel Woods, Wm Woods Jr, & a David W. McCullough as mbrs of a Presby congregation at Walnut Bottom in Penn Twp Cumberland Co in 1834 aka the Dickinson Church. (p 334-335) It also mentions a tract in West Pennsborough Twp which was taken out by Richard & John Woods in 1786 & sld the same yr to Landis & Bowman. A mill already existed on the land & some of the land eventually was owned by Alters. In 1789 it was referred to as "the Landis mill, formerly Woods". This was later replaced by a mill blt by Wm Alter in 1832. The Alter mill was also a local trading-post, saaw-mill, clover-mill, & a whiskey distillery. (p 362-3) (Landis and Alter are also my family names in PA.) I found the following on the Wood/Woods Exchange on Wills has Michael Woods Jr, Botetourt Co VA, dated 29 May 1776, recd 11 Mar 1777, wife Ann Woods, sons Saml, Wm & David. Daus Jane Buster, Susannah Cowan, Elizabeth Shepherd, Magdelene Campbell, Martha Woods, Sarah Woods, 2 youngest daus, ANN & Margaret. Execs: son David Woods & friend John Bowyer. Wit: John Logan, George Daugherty, & Chas Lambert. I am wondering about the Cumberland Co. PA information matching information from Albemarle Co. The Albemarle Woods family left PA almost 50 years prior to the marriage of Mary Ann to Andrew Sharp. I have not seen anything that would suggest that Michael Woods Jr returned to PA at any time in order for his daughter to marry there. My immediate thought is that records for 2 different Woods families have been intermixed.
