Richard Woods came to Albemarle County, VA which adjoins Augusta and is on the eastern slope of the mountain, 1700's. He is said to have migrated from pennsylvania down the Valley and across the mountain at "Woods Gap". I have some information on him, but if this is the family you are seeking I will get a Woods descendent to contact you. Great story about General Jackson crossing the mountain west to east after a great victory at Cross keys and Port Republic. It is said he wanted the union to think he was headed to Richmond to help Lee. Instead he turned at Michums River, just west of Charlottesville, goton the train and pursued his Valley Campaign, which George Rommel later studied, about 1937, with considerable success. Anyhow, before turning at Mechjums on the train (cars, they called them then) he is reported to have stayed at Michael woods tavern. Doubtful, but a great story. So michael Woods asked him where he was going. Jackson is said to have repled with a question: Can you keep a secret?" To which Woods assented. Then Jackson said "so can I". You see, Jackson hared his plans for the next days battle with his staff at Kernstown, and met defeat. After that he never shared his plans with anyone, not even Lee. But Lee had such confidence in him that sharing was not needed. In 1820 there were more Wood and Woods people in Albemarle county, VA than any other name. I am sitting here at the bottom of the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountain looking up at Woods Old Gap. If you want a contact expert on these Woods send me your address and I will forward it on after I locate one agreeable.. Daley Craig <daleycraig@cs.com>
Michael Woods was the patriarch of this family. His wife was Mary Campbell. His 1st grants in the Albemarle area (then Goochland) were entered 1737. One of the grants was just east of the gap, another on Mechum River near the entrance of LickingHole Creek, another on Beaver Creek and yet another on Ivy Creek. He died in 1762. His will names: son Archibald, son John, daughter Sarah, daughter Hannah, deceased daughter Margaret, and son William. Richard and Michael aren't named but were undoubtedly sons. I believe they entered Albemarle Co. as a group, coming from Lancaster Co. PA. Archibald moved to S. Carolina where he died in 1768. Andrew moved to Botetourt Co. dying in 1785. Michael moved to Shepherd's Ferry in Botetourt Co. dying in 1777 William d 1782 in the present Monroe Co area of Greenbrier Co. Hannah m William Wallace Margaret m Andrew Wallace Richard and John apparently remained in the Albemarle area.
