    3. The Scotch-Irish (which is a term these people placed upon themselves in the mid-19th century to differentiate their culture from the famine Irish who were entering America) did settle up and down the Valley, but were heavier in southern Augusta Co. and in northern Rockbridge Co. In the 18th century this area was known as the Irish Tract because of the heavy concentration of Ulster Scots. The markers for locating these communities are Presbyterian churches (almost all Scotch-Irish were Presbyterian) and there are 2 churches (Fort Defiance and Fishersville are the nearest villages) with churches about 260 years old, and then there are six other churches in the more southern part of the county and northern Rockbridge which are just over 250 years old. A good book to read to give perspective on this is Howard Wilson's Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom.
