The idea of digitized images of census documents online is, I think, excellent, I don't normally plug products but I recently purchased from Family Tree Maker images of the 1850 Census of Kentucky. Not only do you get the actual images, without transcription errors but the images have been enhanced and the program allows the user to zoom in and out for easier reading. The CD's are indexed which makes the search a lot easier. I know FTM has 1850 for Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina. The cost is not cheap at $49.95 but in this case I believe it is worth it.
