    3. Hello, Considering the fact that my ancestors were among the earliest settlers of the Shenandoah Valley, and the fact that my mother was born in Harrisonburg (now Rockingham County), I have an awful lot of connections to the Augusta/Rockingham County surnames. Where to begin? Lewis/Lynn -- John Lewis from Donegal County, Ireland (1678-1762), wife Margaret Lynn -- John Lewis was founder of Staunton Lewis/Strother -- Thomas Lewis born Donegal County, Ireland (1718-1790) wife Jane Strother -- Thomas Lewis was surveyor for Augusta County for a number of years, he created street layout for Staunton Lewis/Yancey -- Frances Lynn 'Fannie' Lewis (1763-1845), husband William Layton Yancey Harrison/Cravens -- Daniel Harrison (1701-1770/Margaret Cravens Smith/Harrington -- John Smith (1701-1776)/Margaret Harrington Smith/Harrison -- Daniel Smith (1724-1781)/Jane Harrison Smith/McDonough -- William Smith (1775-1806)/Diana McDonough Kisling/Lingel-Lingle -- Christopher Kissling (1712-1774)/Anna Christina Lingel Miller/Koger -- Adam Miller (1703-1783)/Anna Maria Barbara Koger Miller/Baer -- Anna Barbara Miller (1726-1791)/Jacob Baer Kisling/Baer -- Jacob Kisling (1760-1835)/Anna Barbara Baer Other surnames that may potentially have Augusta County connections include: Kemper, Cavanaugh, Mauzy, Winsborough, Gibbons, Keffer. My active lines of research at this time are Gibbons, Miller, Baer/Bear, and two surnames not found in my direct line (Harnsberger, Conrad). Also, I know of the following Augusta County connection which I would be interested in following up with any active researchers of this lines: Abel Gibbons (1786-1877)/Elizabeth 'Betsy' Bumgardner -- Bumgardner's are from Augusta County. Last but not least, I have placed a number of old family letters online, at the following address: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/letter_series.htm There are a number of names found among these letters that I cannot identify. Some of these names appear to connect to Page County, VA, some connect to Rockingham County, VA, and it is quite likely that some of them connect to Augusta County as well. If you recognized any of the "other individuals", please let me know. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu
