    3. YAY!! I always like doing good! though getting in trouble is fun too :) Let me know if you want any more Juls Cinmaryjane@aol.com wrote: Julie, I have a feeling that the Windle is my line. Windle, Wendel, Vandal, Vandale. All of these spellings appear in my Vandale line. Abraham Vandal came from New York right after the revolutionary war to VA. It is mentioned that he had cousins there. A new mystery to check out. Also the Lentz, Lantz, Lance is connected to my children's father. You did good, girl! 2. Just in case there are some new researchers on the list -- you can always check Chalkley for great tidbits _http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley) There are 3 volumes. Just go to each one individually, scroll down to the index and then put in the surname you are searching for. Then go to the next one etc etc etc. Enjoy. 3. This isn't going to be of direct help but may provide another angle. I found the 1787 and 1788 Augusta Tax Lists at the Dallas Public Library a few years ago. I have hard copies of the pages I needed in the attic. I don't remember the Title or Author so I'm not much help here, but again the Tax Lists had been put into book form. If you have a major library I'd suggest checking the card catalog. My Bodkin started on the Bullpasture River (just west of the Cowpasture/Calf Pasture) in 1746 then moved north to the BlackThorne (now southern Pendleton) in 1764. They were on the 1787/1788 tax list on the BlackThorne in Charles Cameron's District. The lists showed the acreage and tax district but not a breakdown of each household. There are delinquent tax lists that are separate from the others. Look around for these as well. 3. The copy of the 1777 tithe list is from "Magazine of Virginia Genealogy" Vol 40, No 4 November 2002 published by the Virginia Genealogical Society. I did post a comparison of the tithe list to the land record to the Kincaid list and may have copied to this list. Starting in August of 2002 I posted a rundown of land on the various greater Augusta Co. rivers to the Kincaid list. I know I sent the same information to this list sometime that fall. It may be a year or so later that I did the comparison with the tax list. I do not have time at this point to find the post and repost it but you might be able to search the archives and find it. All the "play" time I have is being devoted to an analysis of land holdings in Albemarle Co. (primarily in the Mechum River watershed). This in an effort to better understand Kincaid relationships in the region. I do not know if anyone on list has ordered the film from the LDS that contains the tax lists for Augusta Co. A Kincaid researcher did plow through the Bath, Botetourt and Greenbrier lists for Kincaids and mentioned that there was a film for Augusta but she didn't have the time to go through it. Information from those tithe lists has greatly increased our knowledge about Kincaids in those counties. 3. If memory serves me correctly (and I could definitely be wrong) the law passed in Virginia by 1787 required that each tax commissioner visit each 'home' in his district to record the information. This was in contrast to the 'old' requirement of each landowner coming to the commissioner with the information. Thus, the listing of Titheables per the commissioner in each district gives us now the effect of a "Census" in that you can tell who lived by who based on the order listed in the commissioner's Tax List. This "requirement" of the commissioner to visit each household may have changed as time went on, but perhaps the above will be of some help in your searches. 3. The tax list for 1777 for the Great and Little Calf Pasture areas is listed (with a few exceptions) according to residence. By comparing the listing to the original buyers of the Patton & Lewis tracts on the Great Calfpasture (noting land transfers prior to 1777) and by looking at other land holdings on these rivers, it can be seen that the enumorator started at the head of the Great Calf Pasture, moved downstream, went back and picked up a few he had missed then went on to the Little Calf Pasture. There are a few at the end of the list that are out of place but otherwise the one-one correspondance is striking. Also, are there any other tax lists from the very early 1800's Karen, the tax list at that time period only documents the tiheables -- males over age 21 with their own listing and males 16-21 in the household. Also if I understand it correctly -- the person taking the tax did not visit the household but the householders visited the tax counter so if two people were listed consecutively -- it only means that they went to the tax office together -- doesn't describe where their houses were in relationship to each other. If you have access to a Mormom Family History Library -- here are the film numbers that you would want for interlibrarly loan. Sometimes, the library even has copies already available. Take care. 1. [VAAUGUST] 1787 Tax List
    2. Hello. Does anyone have access to the 1787 Tax List for Augusta County? I must have seen it at one time, because in my old notes I have noted Merques [Marcus} Cup, with his son George Cup next door, but I did not note how many males, females, or dwellings they had listed for them. If someone could just let me know that info I would be very thankfull. Also, are there any other tax lists from the very early 1800's published? George Cup died in 1804, and I am trying to find out if he had any sons. Thanks again for the help. Karen Lee Williamsburg,VA
